The Last of Us Episode 8 is INSANE

Фильм және анимация

A review/analysis of The last of us Episode 8. Bella Ramsey did an outstanding job as Ellie in this episode in her climactic and traumatizing confrontation with David. Pure insaninity. Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States.

Ha, watched the episode in my living room and my housemate had just come into the living room too as that scene played out. He just heard the screaming and stabbing without knowing any context, and got quite disturbed. That said, I did not expect it to be such a brutal scene even after all Ellie did to get there. Theirs also a unique little detail that i truly love, and that’s that when David captures Ellie, he takes off her jacket and puts her in a cage. But when she is reunited with Joel, Joel right away gives her his jacket to stay warm. One only called himself “father” on the surface level and wanted to sexually assault her. Her true father hugged her and comforted her in her time of absolute need. One was concern of their own needs and desires, while the other only worried about her.

This is the episode of the last of us I knew was coming, but hadn’t quite seen unfold before. The horror of human beings in their quest for survival and power. The analogy I drew was a pirate ship ran by a psychopathic cannibal captain - the only choices being surrender and be tortured, jump and be eaten by sharks, or risk death and take over the ship. Amazing.

Agreed! I always prefer drama to action. Action is boring and easy, if not done right or is done too much, and almost no one does it right. But at first, I actually felt a little underwhelmed by missing infected sequence from this episode. I have scoffed at people whining about changes from the game the whole season, but I was a little on their side for that one issue. Then it struck me that dropping a lot of the action beats with the infected keeps us on our toes. They remain scarier, because they're not remotely overutilized. So I've come around. This is probably in my top three favorite episodes of the season.

I like the way the shows have portrayed the villains. In so many movies and tv shows, the villain is an over the top screaming and “clearly” a man man/woman. Evil rarely looks like that when showing a public face. Kathleen came across like a soccer mom, but she was ruthless when trying to get what she wanted. David did slowly show his dark side, but you could also kinda feel it in the way his flock reacted to him. The writing, directing and acting on this show are superb. I’m obsessed.

The problem isn't with the canibalism precisely but the how they "do" canibalism. It's very different if they use already dead bodies than if they kill to have human flesh. David has shown he was pretty capable of doing so with Ellie and they litterally have a cage beside the table where they are cutting bodies, meaning she probably wasn't the first prisoner that they ended up killing for food. They also lied to a grieving wife and daughter about their dead husband and father's body not being buried and instead being cooked and eaten, and by said wife and daughter too!

But cannibalism is a taboo and dangerous practice as you can see how David and his best men turned out to be: Perceiving humans as their food or sexual subjects. @@mariebourgot4949 I understand if it's for pure survival, still, hard to accept. It's dangerous in the sense that not everybody can keep their original intention & sanity especially not for David's group. The context and reason matter. Like in this episode, the right hand man of David was obviously hesitated about feeding on their people's corpses, but still, he accept it as he understand it's for survival. But in David's case, it's obvious that he would kill to eat. Not just feeding off the dead. Most likely he was keeping the people in town as backup livestock. You can see the different food preference/mentality: Ellie actually put in effort to hunt a game. David's group might have preferred the easier game (human corpse/stealing game) than doing actual hunting. Who knows how many in the slaughterhouse were originally dead or were they murdered by their own group.

The explanation for why they're not in the middle of nowhere makes sense, and this isn't TWD where they just randomly have action scenes. The infected have only ever been used to progress the plot in a meaningful way, just like the rest of the human enemies and side characters in this season. It was established way back in s1 that they were leaving the cities en masse for this reason. That David then let her go would have further cemented that, maybe, he wasn't the worst, which would then have made him proving to be the worst more impactful. I completely get that having infected in the frigid wilderness might not make the most sense, but it would have been a second opportunity to show that if you touch cordyceps in one area, then, like a network, it can draw infected to you...something they established in Episode 2 and then seem to have forgotten about iin every other episode.

Great episode my main complaint though is that they should have had maybe a few zombies come around and attack Ellie and David as they were sitting together and maybe while ellie was reloading David could have shot one of them he had a gun the whole time and that would have given Ellie more trust in David. And David could have simply said offhand that's rare but every once in awhile infected you come out.

Now why couldn't the Walking Dead have writers like these. Basically the same elements here that were there as well and look how they managed to botch that up. They went for quantity over quality 🤦

I've never seen any of the Walking Dead shows before. I'm curious how the drama compares between TWD and TLOU. Like I've heard (unironically) that TLOU isn't a zombie game/show, but rather a love story. Does TWD focus more on action, or do they cover human problems as much? Because it seems like they go entire episodes in this show without even bringing up the Infected. Humans are seemingly an even bigger threat to each other than the zombies are.

@@Jigglypoof Yeah the Walking Dead focuses alot more on slow tedious character development. So many ”filler” episodes. They try shaking things up by having the last 5 minutes or so if the episode kind of exciting. The performances here in TLOU are worlds better, same with the tension and world building. Yeah three zombies were put on the back burner in lieu of psychotic villains but maybe no mistake, TWD blew lol

Not treating the audience like they're stupid, wins BIG points from me. It creates tons of conversation about the episode/movie, and adds rewatchability, in which you will gain more info than in the last viewing. It is one of the most crucial features of good storytelling in cinema, imo.

The HBO show does treat its audience like its stupid. David was a much more nuanced, grey character, in the videogame, who was gradually revealed to be a monster. The HBO show turned David into a cliché villain who was a crazy, religious cult leader that believe in the 'Love and Bond of Cordyceps'. The show sucks.

For someone like me who hasn't played the games, this show is really good. The fact that so many gamers seem almost offended by it says a lot about the quality of the games. I really can't wait for it to come out on PC.

Don’t listen to the morons hating on the show. TLOU is one of my fave games of all time and this show is absolutely hitting it out of the park. The haters are doing so solely because of how Bella looks. They’re like David, only most don’t eat human flesh.
