The Last of Us Episode 6 Hits you with a Wombo Combo

Фильм және анимация

A review/analysis of the Last of Us Episode 6. I primarily look at Joel and Ellie's heartbreaking confrontation and the overall acting from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey is phenomenal. Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States.

That the remake, cleverly releases shortly before the series starts, now tries to cover this fuck up is honestly a bit dishonest to me. To play devil's advocate, I interpreted Ellie running away in the game as her trying to make Joel come after her. She doesn't hide when Joel and Tommy show up. She says "I'm up here." Pedro's monologue had me shedding so much tears. Just the contrast to what the convo with Tommy was originally from the game to this, and sharing his recognition of struggling thru the journey having panic attacks and being frozen in moments of fear for losing someone close brought such emotion and vulnerability to accept he wasn't able to care for Ellie at that point. It shows that he, like many of us, has fears and demons and worries about the future that we can only ignore for so long - and confronting them is hard. He is such a grounded and believable character in this episode especially. It felt like watching a real person. And that’s before we even get into Ellie’s character development, the pivotal choices Joel has to make, the very complex differences in outlook between himself and his brother, the themes of loss and protecting the ones you love…the list goes on. literal 10/10

I feel like the people wanting more action and saying that episodes like this are filler don't understand what the point of this show is. The point of this show isn't to be an action packed gore mania. The whole point of this show is Joel and Ellie, and their relationship. Any episode that focuses on them is far from filler, considering those two characters are the main point of the show.

The scene where Ellie hears the knock and then sees it's Tommy is so poignent to me. I grew up with two working parents that weren't able to take time off for daytime school events like my classmate's stay at home parents could. So you know they aren't coming for you, but deep down you still think "it would be nice if they came through that door..." And when they don't, you don't get upset, just disappointed and then you chide yourself for feeling disappointed bc "you knew they weren't gonna come for you anyway." Bella's face was such a perfect capture of that, wordlessly.

I couldn’t figure out why Joel, in the past few episodes, has at least one point where he’s really out of breath. I thought maybe they were going to change up the part where he gets stabbed (or in the game, impaled) and give him pneumonia or something. But the panic attack thing is so good. The way Joel and Ellie’s relationship unfolds in the game is so fantastic, but the game allows it to happen in so many more hours. I think they’re doing as good of a job as they possibly can with the amount of time they’re given in 9 episodes.

I'm usually the one scoffing at people complaining it isn't enough like the games, but there was something I sorely missed this episode. And that's the moment in the first game after the raiders at the dam are finished off and Tommy looks over at an excited Ellie rambling at Joel. And you can see that Joel is very concerned for Ellie, asking if she's hurt. Tommy can see how much Joel cares about Ellie and it shocks him into accepting the offer to escort her. It was some satisfying show-don't-tell that tells us that the dynamic between Ellie and Joel had definitely changed. Tommy could see that Joel's growing love for Ellie was tormenting him. I wish they'd kept that scene.

Tommy did have a knowing smile when Joel gave Ellie a choice. He knows Joel cares about Ellie as a daughter. It may not have been done the same but the point was made. Plus Joel's whole monolog was I care about this kid to see her die like sarah. Just differently put on screen.

I have to say, having Joel go though such emotional pain in this episode kinda shows that despite all the emotional shields and jadedness he seemed to have at the start his still not over Sarahs death, and the fact that he's starting to feel those same fatherly pangs for Ellie is just opening those wounds and despite the 20 years he's still just as vulnerable as the day she died. His mask is slipping not only to Ellie but also to himself and he is not prepared or quite knows how to deal with it.

at first i didnt understand the reason behind creating a tv adaptation(besides profit ofc) since i thought they would just keep the story 100% the same to avoid backlash from fans but man was i proven wrong. I used to have a very love/hate relationship with joel but i still thought he was an excellent, realistic character, now, only 6 episodes in, im already growing more attached to pedro's version. i was at a very different stage of my life when i first watched a walkthrough of the first game(i was too poor to afford a ps4 lol) and its somewhat comforting(?) to have it in another form again. my father died last summer and was always super closed off but became somewhat more open as his condition got worse and watching joel panic at the sudden thought of not being able to care for his daughter really reminded me of what he was like in those last few months. i didnt even realize i was crying at the moment where he saw the woman he imagined was sarah until my friend next to me told me. obviously the shows not perfect but i think theyve been getting pretty damn close

Super great portrayal of what panic attacks look like as well as coping mechanisms to help with them. For example him grabbing the cold pole is a great coping mechanism to deal with anxiety and panic attacks which is temperature change. Feeling something cold, or hot can help you feel grounded and deal with panic disorders.

I loved this episode but I agree with the scene in the science lab. I do feel the game handled it better than the show. This isn't to say it was completely horrible, just that it could have been done better. It was so amazing in the game because I FELT the impact Joel had on his body. The wound was just so much more gruesome and gnarly in the game: Joel falls off a glass rail and gets stabbed in the chest. It actually made me worry how Joel was going to survive because it was just SO violent. In the show, while the scene was shocking, the wound just came out of nowhere. It had nowhere near the impact as it did in the game. Then, in the game, it showcases the bond with Ellie as she fends off attackers and carries Joel slowly to their horse. Another one of my favourite subtle moments in the game was when Ellie stayed with Joel after Henry leaves with Sam: Ellie willingly throws herself into danger when she's in a place of safety just to stay with Joel. In the show, (maybe im forgetting a scene who knows) but I don't think we really got that one moment of Ellie throwing herself into danger in a place of safety. I mean yeah in the show Ellie did kind of fend off the attackers but it didn't feel the same because of another missed opportunity which was having the scene take place outside in the show. The game had it take place indoors which added to the sense of claustrophobia as you had to play as Joel, who had to traverse over windows and shelves all while being injured and having their vision fade in and out. That made it seem visceral. I know games and shows are different mediums and perhaps that was why the game made me feel so much more as we are actually placed in the shoes of Joel and perhaps the experience was lacking because I had played the game before I watched the show but I feel like they could have improved on that. I don't want to seem like a hater of the show because I genuinely do love it and the attention to detail it has to the world of the last of us. A neat little one I noticed was how Maria introduced a baby horse named Shimmer and in The Last Of Us Part 2 we meet that exact same horse all grown up called Shimmer! That small little dialogue just put a goofy grin on my face. Aside from that small scene yet another homerun for mister Craig Mazin and the entire crew who worked on this show!

The show has kinda established that this version of Ellie is kinda crap at shooting, it wouldn't really have worked to replicate fighting out of the university, since game Ellie is more competent with a gun. Also, I think the show has their relationship at a different stage compared to the game. The show has them bond more slowly cause they start off kinda hostile and distant with each other, whereas in the game they're a bit more "friendly" when they first set off on their journey. Either way, I think the show has done well to illustrate the strength of their bond in others ways that weren't in the games.

i usually watch the episodes by myself before i watch them with my partner, as we are students who live in separate houses and the schedule isn’t really great. but this episode was the first one i got to watch with them where i had not seen it prior. i’ve been in love with the games for years, but they’ve only seen the very beginning of the game and nothing more. everything now is new territory for them. i was sitting there with tears in my eyes as i quoted joel and ellie’s argument. god, when the fucking fade in of joel’s unbroken watch with him and sarah setting ornaments on the tree-we were bawling. there’s something so powerful about a show that can simply have something like that emotionally destroy someone. it’s too good. plus, episode 5 and 6 ruined my mom as well. originally, i asked my mom if she would watch the show when it came out (way back in 2022), and she said yes, not really expecting to enjoy it. now she’s so invested, and is so anxious when each episode comes out to see was happens. plus, she is always up for seeing pedro (we have the same taste in men). also i discussed with my partner that i wanted them to try to get the role for lev (obviously just a silly dream), but they’re an asian-american trans actor who i think would make an incredible lev. we;re actually working on a cosplay right now, and we’ll post it the tlou Reddit when it’s done.

Craig Mazin in The Last of Us podcast talks about his Lord of the Rings influence, I think that scene with the horses and the dog sniffing was directly inspired by the scene in The Two Towers where the Riders of Rohan surround Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. The mixture of the horses surrounding the pair, and the shaky, chaotic filming really reminded me of that scene and might be why you thought it seemed familiar

A change I really liked was how the confrontation between Joel and Ellie was given space to sink in and viewers could really feel its lingering implications and impact. The game unfortunately undercuts this powerful emotional moment by suddenly having the characters be suddenly ambushed and all the weight of the moment is swept aside for a quick gunfight that takes players out of the affective space the scene so expertly invoked up to that point.

After Joel gets injured, she’s resourceful enough to get him off the rebar, and then shortly after, maybe before I can’t remember exact timing. But guys, she shoots a few guys, then gets a baseball bat to the head. Then shoots the guy after that. I just like that the game shows her combat prowess really well. "Lacks more action" makes sense in a TV setting, because as a human being, you will do everything in your power to avoid conflict to keep the loved ones around you safe. But this show also showed that the character will not hesitate to kill if it is absolutely necessary, thus not affecting the character adapted from the game. They truly did find a sweet spot that balances game and TV.
