Japanese warrior ethic, Bushido, got in their way of military strategy. Their devotion to their Emperor prevented practical considerations. The competition between their Army and Navy made for some poor decisions. America's manufacturing might and tough, gritty, innovative soldiers made it difficult for Japan to succeed in a long war. Even today, the same shipping lanes around Asia remain vital for China and Japan. And America's Navy can bottle the narrow channels with a single Arleigh-Burke Destroyer, let alone additional resources. China has only a 60 day supply of oil, which they must import, largely through those sea lanes.

Thx. Hara's memoirs are good, but not accurate as to US losses. Of course none of them are. He did admit his mistake of not turning off his searchlight. The Helena raked his destroyer with 6" shells.

I was never in the navy. So maybe I don't know what I am talking about. However turning the lights on in a night battle. To me sounds of a bad idea . Maybe the worse idea of all times.

@@davidsmith7372At the time of this battle, the Japanese didn't have radar, plus at night, you don't want to fire on your own ships. For the Japanese, the searchlights served for ranging and ID. Americans had the same problem identifying friendly ships!

This. They had no protection from carrier based planes, and 100% sure that they would have been smashed the next day, had they pursued. Japan could not afford the loss of capital ships, not when the US was CRANKING them out.

I am enjoying hearing these accounts front the side not told before... I wish the reader would pronounce "bow" meaning the front of the ship the same way as "to bow" with respect... Using the pronunciation "bow" like bow and arrow is not correct for ships...

The US military was at its lowest level during the National Depression Era. It was WW2 that got the nation out of the Depression. FDR helped out Britain during the aftermath of the Battle of Britain. The next year Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Everything happened all at once. Employment increases, military recruitment was up considerably, and the war materials were produced day and night at factories. The Japanese Navy was astonished how quickly the US bounced back to continue to fight so fervently against them. The Americans to the Japanese, did not have the warrior spirit they had. They were wrong.

They have no illusion of winning the war because the USA is by far the worlds richest and with the worlds biggest industrial machine. If you take a closer look on their strategic objective and military operations, its all about briinging the Americans into a negotiating table and not about acheiving superiority over the Americans.
