"There is no reason to be alive if you can't do deadlift!" - Jón Páll Sigmarsson

I was gutted when I found out he died. It was before I was born, but I loved watching strongman as a kid and when I turned 24 I started getting back into it and thought I'd watch all the wsm comps. He quickly became my favourite athlete. Then I binged the comps and found out he died when I wanted to see what he was up to nowadays and I was gutted. Didn't even exist at the same time as him and it hurt to find out almost three decades ago he died so young. I can't even imagine how hard it would've been for those that knew him personally. He seemed like such a great guy
unfortunately i can only give one thumbs up - JPS was my personal hero - he was the reason for me starting lifting at all - I have seen live when I was 13 I was fascinated by him. he was such an icon, a true legend and... most probably one the biggest reasons why back than media reports did jump on the strongman band wagon. he definetly died way too soon

Yep I switched to power lifting from bodybuilding after seeing Jon Pall just the power I was amazed
I remember as a little danish kid watching these giants from Iceland on tv in the 80's. I loved every minute of it.
I remember exactly where I was when my mom told me JPS had died. Being from Finland, he was big enough of a celebrity here to be reported in about in papers. I was 12 years old. He was my hero. Hell, he still is.

Incroyable personnage 👍💪💪
Jón Páll was my age, i followed him those years. He was a larger than life character and i miss him dearly. He will never be forgotten.
3:45 I could hardly recognise JPS, his face looked so gaunt and ill. I too couldn’t believe he’d died so young. He was a true one of a kind and this brought back the sadness of hearing of his death. Brilliant video.
Liz and Loz, this might be the best video you've ever made. I'm a bit emotional. Amazing work.
Awesome video, Jón Páll Sigmarsson was always my favourite growing up as a little kid, screaming, "I am the Viking!" it was brilliant. You just know if he was born 1000 years ago he'd be that crazy Viking that myths were made from!
Jon Pall was so good for the sport. He ran his mouth during comps but he did it for entertainment, behind it all he always seemed to have great respect for his opposition. Also Capes doesn't nearly get enough credit (i guess he does in England) as an early great and pioneer of the sport.
Þetta er ekkert mál fyrir Jón Pál!
I often tell my peers about Jon Páll (I mean his name alone is price worthy) but noone ist even slightly interested in strength sport around me, which is a bummer and I sit here watching this small documentary having goosebumps. What a character. I am 35 today he went far too soon.
Thank you both.
I met Jon a few times with Jamie Reeves, he was always polite and great sense of humour 🙏
One of the reasons me and my nan used to watch strongman together when I was a kid, she loved JP and so did I. Wonderful man, sorely missed. ❤
A lovely tribute. Thank you Loz and Liz x
Such a beautiful tribute. Thank you for sharing this with us. ❤
Great job guys! Loved it.
Of all your video work I enjoy the historical pieces the most, and this was the best ever. Looking forward to the rest in this series!
Brilliant! Very well narrated.
I knew only bits and pieces. Thanks so much for the eye opener Big Loz and Lizz! He was such a character. Sad Loss.
So tragic he died so young, crazy I was barely an infant when he passed. Such a legend, I always enjoyed watching the vintage competions with him.
A few legends of strength sports in this video that are no longer with us, Jón páll, Douglas Edmunds and David Webster. Quite an emotional watch

Douglas was so upset when Jón Páll died that he nearly quit the Strongman sport completely. Nice to see him and David in the video. Emotional indeed.
This was an amazing video Loz and Liz👏👏. Always love them but this was a step up. When I first started watching WSM I loved it because of the battles between Jon Paul and Capes. Both legends. Thanks
You guys have outdone yourselves, fantastic video, looking forward for more to come about other athletes!
This was awesome Loz !! He was a true legend and also a showman who lit our TV screens up in the early WSM !! His legacy will always live on ❤
Wow, thanks. I really enjoyed this show. Very interesting ❤
You guys did a fantastic job on this tribute video! Well done!
This kind of content is top tier Lozzie!
I did a spreadsheet and worked out the most dominant WSM competitors ever - JPS ranks 5th best ever. That's only below Shaw, Big Z, Pudz and Thor. That's some achievement!
@kermitthefragg
Ай бұрын
Your spreadsheet told you a guy that won WSM 4 times is less dominant than a guy who won once? Seems reasonable.
@Gndlf_TheOrange
Ай бұрын
@kermitthefragg Yes, because it's based on placing and consistency. Not saying it's the most accurate thing in the world, just a bit of fun.

@@kermitthefragg I could probably re-jig it so that any win trumps not winning and the more wins the higher place, but then we'd just be looking at the same table we already know about

Did you account for Big Z being abscent for 3 yrs (at least) where he would easily have beaten Pudz? There was those (iirc) 2004-2008 years where Big Z competed in the "wrong federation" and his 3 WSMs there didn't count cause that federation lost out to WSM. But he would 100% have smashed Pudz during 2 or 3 of Pudzs wins and have had 6-7 WSMs to go with his 8 Arnolds today. It is a bit sad and the biggest "what if" story of Strongman history today ... But Big Z's 4 official titles does not do the man any justice.
@Gndlf_TheOrange
Ай бұрын
@barath4545 Totally agree. This was purely based on wsm stats. I did do a combine with Arnold's and he wins by a landslide. Basically 10 finalists each year get 10 points to 1 point depending on their position, add it all up. Basic but gives a rough guide to "who's the best wsm competitor ever?"
I was shocked to learn of Jon Pall's death back when I was watching all the old WSM competitions on KZread. I was like where's Jon Pall? Did a Google search and learned of his passing. A true legend of the sport.
Thank you. This was amazing
Superb tribute to a Legend, thanks you two.
Very well done with this video.
This channel keeps upping its game, it gladdens an old Strongman fan that you exist and keep making these videos. I'm just about old enough to remember Sigmarsson (born '84) - he made an impact on a young boy, and really brought the sport some much needed flair and entertainment.
Thank you for posting this video. Jon Pall will live on in the hearts of the fans and strength athletes until the end of time. So many great lifts and rivalries. Watching this really brought me back to which I consider the golden era of strong man.
Absolutely outstanding video, 10/10 folks 👏👏

Brilliant!! ❤
Love this 🙏 my first recollection of watching WSM as a kid was him shouting The King Has Lost His Crown in 1984 getting his first title 🏆🏆🏆🏆
That was a great video!
Brilliant tribute to Jón Pál Sigmarsson who, in my opinion is the greatest strong man of all time! Died doing what he loves, and he was right, "There's no reason to be alive, if you can't do Deadlifts!" RIP 🙏 💪
A great tribute ❤
I did not know that he died.Such a nice person.I seen him when world's strongest man before, Such a gentleman very humble.
Great video 👍❤️
Every sport needs great guys like this in its formative years. They all bring their sport to the next level.
Yessir! I hope you guys make a while series of all strong men past!
I can remember shouting at the telly during his battles with Geoff Capes. "The king is not dead" was legendary.
Beautiful tribute to a legend in the sport.
What a great and touching tribute.
Thanks Loz, this is the best telling of JPS story I have seen. I've always felt Kaz was the greatest ever but I have been questioning that lately with JPS achievements.
Jon Paul was a true treasure 👏🇺🇸
The term Legend gets thrown around a lot these days, but Jon was truly a legend
Love this!!! Thank you! Maybe one day do a video on the correct spelling😂 and history of certain events like axle, yoke, and Fingal’s finger (Fingal’s Cave)?
Very good video. More I want to say, but I don’t have the words ❤
Love some of his quotes! RIP
What a character. Could a stared in wwf. Legendary battles with Kaz and Geoff capes.
As a wi American lad of course I followed kaz at the time. But then here come this as so many of you rightly said larger than life character. I was an absolute fan. I miss hearing him call for the viking power! Cool video loz as always appreciate the upload...
Large ascending aorta: systolic pressure during heavy weight lifting can rise from a normal reading of 120 to highs of 280 and even 300. “If your aorta is weak due to your genetics and if it is mildly enlarged, weight lifting might be what puts you over the brink,”.... research indicates that retired NFL athletes are more likely to have enlarged aortas than people in the general population. .... Researchers report 4 cases of ascending aortic dissection in patients with long histories of weight lifting. In 2 of the patients, the initial symptoms of dissection developed. So if you weight lift go check out your heart with a cardiologist.
@jd9119

And what let them tell you to not lift weights? Look, JPS died young, but he at least got to die while doing what he loved doing. Plus he lived a whole lot during that time he was alive. Most of us will never be so lucky even if we live to be 100.

Not just that, he was lifting unnaturally heavy weights thanks to PEDs. Bicep tears and pec tears typically happen to steroid users, not natural lifters.

I’m 60 and have a 46 mm aortic root my cardiologist believes was due to th weights I did in my 20s and 30s- LOTS of high rep high weight squats and everything else- not sure about genetics but no steroids, no smoking and I do have high blood pressure. It’s very true the valsalva of lifting does damage- I’m more into cardio now and breathe through weights

Jón Páll - such an entertaining and important figure for the whole world of strongman 🤗 #lovehim #rip #viking
4:14 i can relate so heavy to this part. Kazmaier is a fucking LEGEND in his own right.
He really was one of the true greats of strongman - everyone loved him, his personality and character oozed off the screen. He was the highlight of our traditional family viewing of strongman. I think my mum always fancied him. Rest in peace, there are few people in the world as awesome as JPS.

No, everyone didn't love him. A very common view at the time was he was an utter prick.
Absolute powerhouse of a man!
Wonderful tribute. The sport wouldn't be the same without him.
An absolute icon in strongman, taken from us far too young. We need personalities in strongman to grow the sport and he was the perfect example of this, combined with immense talent.
Sure the family did not like to hear about the drug use. But the truth is he was a drug addict, just a different type of street corner
"I'm not an Eskimo, I'm a viking!"
Great vidio Loz and what a great man Jon Pall. I wonder how many more WSM he would have won if he didnt die
30 years later he is still celebrated by strenght community. Safe to say he died a legend.
Jon Pall was my favorite back in those days. RIP
I've followed strongman since Jon Pall burst on to the scene and his battles with Jeff Capes ...he was the Tiger woods of strongman ...what a guy !!!
I remember watching him when I was a little kid definitely Unforgettable
Hé was the one That motivatie me to go lift Stones and i stil do 😅 great video thanks
I'm so sorry that I can only give 111/10 score. Good job, guys.👊 I'm sure most of us would love to leave this place doing what we love the most, but at the early age of 32... 💔 Without question the best strongman content on KZread.
You can see how Thor grew up worshipping Jon Pall, he even started seeling Skyr overseas like Jon did and opened his own Iclenadic gym like Jon Pall. I suspect Thor left Strongman for a while mainly due to fears that he would end up like JP.
Hopefully this video will gain TOO MUCH POWERRRR in the algorithm and show more people Jon Palls story
Made me tear up, he embodies what it means to be strong.
The Icelandic viking will always be my favorite of all time.
It's amazing how strong he was given his size and weight
I get home from a family vacation to Disneyland and see this waiting for me... Loz, Liz, you may have just done some one-upmanship on Mickey Mouse, Roller Coasters and all manner of fun stuff.
The goat of strongmen
Good lookin guy with a nice smile a fine ladd
Good video. It sounds like his uncontrolled high blood pressure caused his aortic to rupture.
Ah watching this amazing, I’m 8 years old again, watching Jon and Geoff battle again ❤ thanks so much , still a massive fan, 40 years on ❤🫶🏻💪🏻
He was my hero growing up. I couldn't believe it when I found out he'd died. I actually didn't believe it till I read it in the Guinness book of records next to one of his records. No Googling back then of course.
Sad end. I liked Jon Pall, didn't know about his early death. He probably would have loved to go out the way he did. Great character.
Can you do one on Mike Jenkins next?
Athleticly one of the best ever SM, better than Kazamier 8n that respect (not as strong though), and good-looking, had hair!!
