No way I'd watch 4 hours of any other history documentary. Everyone has already applauded Mary for her fantastic presentation, but I think the producers and their crew also deserve high praise. The camera work and scene staging is top notch. And the organization required to get the trips planned, the lines scripted & recorded, all the pieces filmed, and to edit it all together so well is insane, especially with a small crew.

I Love the way Mary orders her thoughts and presents very complex history as though it were just a normal conversation. This is a rare talent. It inspires a student to then go learn all the details they can. She has given a framework for further learning. I think she is one of the greatest teachers of her time. She reminds me of the great Physiologists Arthur Guyton (no physician has published more work than him, at one point 70% of all Chairmen of USA Physiology departments trained under him). He was a kindly, sensitive old genius. that quietly inspired you to go devour as much knowledge as you could. Mary seems to have all those delightful gifts, so humble, so magnificent, she is.

one of these days you may be able to do that - I am an historian (Late Eastern Empire/Byzantine period) and also a multi media developer. I am working on an AI simulation project that would provide "total immersion" in a desired historical period. One of the sensory areas I am most involved with is trying to simulate olfactory and taste bud experiences. That is quite a challenge but also, in my opinion, essential to recreating a convincing simulation. Imagine walking the streets of Ostia back in 120 CE, smelling the aroma of bread baking, the fish market, wood fires, animal dung, spices, tree and flower blossoms, leather, smelting exhaust, all of it blending into a distinctive "city" aroma.

I have been to Tunisia 🇹🇳 and seen the Roman remains, the Arena, and an old foundation settlement, the Roman Mosaic are fascinating because some of the details correspond with computer programs and that suggest the Romans being more advanced than how we imagine their civilization could have been. We spent a full day with the tour guides as an exclusion and glad we did. The Arena is cluster of tunnels with gateway, and being there can imagine the furious animals treading through these tunnels making their way to the main court of the Arena and there are claw marks imprinted in the stone and it must have been terrifying for the participant.. really was an experience. I was completely captivated by this documentary. Mary's presentation was flawless and her understanding of the subject, superb. As a teacher, I could see how much she loved her subject, especially when she stretched out on the ground at the foot of a statute for a better perspective. Mary's comprehensive presentation has opened my eyes to history that I thought I hated! I just toured Rome and 6 countries in August and I WANT MORE! I sincerely thank you for this documentary!

How astonishing and thrilling to visit these historical, nay legendary sites (Troy, for instance). This is a magnificent tour from an authority and adventurer that we can relate to as she takes us through the essential origins of European civilization. I studied Latin in high school in Canada; how odd that an ancient and glorious civilization should have such a long arm to reach into the 20th Century and prod me to look back in awe. I am most grateful for this presentation, Mary. Romae adhuc vivit.

Mary made their history so grounded and ordinary, I found myself among truly them. I wondered about the changing of the Roman world as if it were the present one, and I cannot un-see the parallels. These scenes, which played out on the screen, thus came to life in my mind. Not only did I see the environment, but the mindset of Rome. Rome, truly, was and is the culmination of an empire. Extraordinary work; everyone who made this a reality! It was not built in a day.

Mary's enthusiasm for history is contagious and her knowledge is impressive,, just reading local Latin off ancient walls and signs... I'd pay HER to be on the location crew... to be looking at these sites with a guide who knows what we're looking at would make for an unbelievably cool experience,, and Mary's excitement and humor would make the trip sublime...💯

❤ Reincarnation is real. It is spoken about throughout all religious texts. The teachings of reincarnation were suppressed, especially in the West. Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah. The Messiah reincarnated in 1971 to try to save humanity. Julian Assange is the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth reincarnated. Julian exposed the lies and deception of the world governments via Wikileaks. Julian also exposed the killing and destruction of the Muslim/Arabic world and its inhabitants by the Western governments. The Romans and Jews are once again attempting to crucify our Messiah, and again, our hands are tied, and we are being prevented from stopping his crucifixion. Reread the Wikileaks drops and learn about Julian, it will become very clear to you what is taking place. The war in Gaza between the Palestinians and the Zionists was predicted and exposed before it even started (and has been ongoing for many years with the help of the West). So yes, to answer the question, the second coming of Christ is happening and has been since 2012 when Julian Assange went into the Ecuadorian Embassy in the UK. The leaders of the Western world governments are collectively The Antichrists/ ad-Dajjal☯️✝️☦️☪️✡️🤲🙌

The difference in the way the documentaries are made between English vs American. The American documentaries like the history channel have a professional narrator(Ed Hermann, Michael Carroll, Robert Clotworthy ) who provides a news like background and then they have historians from all over, American and British to provide commentary and explain things in greater depth. I love Peter Weller's contribution on ancient history docs. Personally I prefer the American style. Making a star of a particular historian has it benefits but this style is more cheeky and folksy. I love Michael Carroll's voice and the Ed Hermann narrated videos of the revolutionary war are the best.

I'm shocked I made it through this entire thing!!! I'm so thankful I did & it was worth every minute. My curiosity of history has never included Rome & the Romans and I've actively avoided it but I'm not sure why. Maybe because I attended a private Christian school until high school and I was raised pentacostal, so I've wrongly felt that my "Bible knowledge" was sufficient. This is the very first real historian I've ever taken the time to watch on this subject matter and now I have a new rabbit hole to go down. I did learn about Hadrian's wall in England years ago and that's on my bucket list but not until watching this has my interest in Roman history ever been sparked. Thank you! Teaching is such a gift and Mary certainly excels at her delivery. It's fascinating to see the places this took her. Thank you again for your priceless gift of knowledge.

I had a social studies/American history teacher who sat on the edge of his desk and spoke with his eyes closed, in a monotone voice the whole time. You a southern boy ehh, well myself I'm right below the Mason-dixon line, in the state that saved the U.S.A. from those invading Brits (now they are our British cousins...lol) Anyway that was not my point for texting, as I wanted you opinion on the history that you were taught in you middle and high school years. For myself, I was almost always let down when it came to my history classes, especially in regards to military history. I had but 1 teacher in 9th grade that actually reached the 19th and 20th century, and taught about the civil war(what so civil about war anyway....G&R lol), and 1st & 2nd world wars (less on the 1st), and he did some w/ Korea and a touch on Vietnam. However aside from him, my teachers barely got up to 19th century and nothing on military history. They all taught about the start of civilization, Egypt, middle ages, founding of America and creation of the U.S. and bit more, but that was about it. Almost all my knowledge is self taught or from Boy Scouts going to all the civil war, and revolutionary war battle sites(or rebel battle sites if your POV is from the British side, lol), as they are very numerous here. In college I selected numerous history class which ended up helping me in regards to my major, as I am a teacher now. I thought I could teach some of the things I love and wasn't taught growing up (math I'm cool with, yet science, & history I love, however the English language I hate, as well as have a dislike w/ comprehension, and spelling). Anywayssss, hit me up if you got the time, as I'd like to here what you think on this topic. OH yeah, FOR EVERYONE ELSE, I'd like to hear from anyone else who reads this comment, as it might help me in regards to what areas of concentration I should focus on. If there were areas that people missed out on, then it maybe be still true and it could help when I'm writing up my next lesson plans, cool. Take it light --KB
