The Importance of Solitude | Catherine Nicoli | TEDxYouth@AnnArbor

A talk about how solitude is good for you by helping one get rid of stress.
Catherine is a junior at Community High School in Ann Arbor. She plays ice hockey for Ann Arbor Skyron and is a Peer Educator with Planned Parenthood. Nature has played a big role in her life, but this past summer she learned how much of an impact it could have on a single person.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Wow I love this speech. Thank you very much. It perfectly describes the benefits that arise from solitude. One could also say that one's own consciousness increases because you suddenly start to look at things you just didn't notice before. Solitude is the best tool for me to get creative work done. It's sometimes hard to not get lost in social activities. I always notice that consciousness declines when I start to engage to much with people or social media. It's not bad to be around people but it's addictive and can prevent you from getting forward and using your time properly. Especially in times of social media and smart phones. Our prefrontal cortex is while we are socializing non stop active. The identification with thoughts and ego can happen much quicker, due to the massiv production of thought around questions like how do I present myself, how do people react to what I say or do. What should I do? Most of the time we are experiencing beta brainwaves. And beta brain waves are not associated with creativity and intimacy. Instead they arise from business, anxious thinking, suppressed emotions/motions and active concentration. That's why many people experience being agitated from using apps like instagram, facebook and other social media platforms to much. The mind is all the time comparing it self with other people. And predicting reactions of other people. Sometimes more and sometimes less. But if you are in a bad emotional state and you reach for the phone, the comparison happens very quickly. And most of the time, people reach for their mobile phones exactly when they are bored or want to distract themselves from something they don't like to feel or experience. This can become a vicious circle where you find yourself scrolling through social media for hours. Without being able to grasp one clear thought. Solitude is often the answer for this. ;) Namaste Everyone
