Yep. The founder of Christianity preached compassion and practiced nonviolence. The founder of Islam preached violence and practiced war. One cannot overestimate the impact of these drastically different starting points.

Did it stop Christians and the West from starting wars? No. Instead, Christians and the west failed to learn how to be gracious in war. Using chemical weapons, nukes, holocaust, it all came from Christians.

Forgive me, but shouldn’t that have occurred to the majority of Christians over the last two millennia, whose history is not exactly full of compassion and nonviolence? Maybe reseeding Christianity isn’t the way to go?

Imagine thinking Christians haven’t been conducting violence justified by religion. Slavery was justified by it, as was colonialism, and those are just a couple of things. Even the war in the Middle East right now, western governments are allowing another government to enact collective punishment, completely ignoring the turn the other cheek and love thy neighbour of their religion. Not sure if Douglas is as dim as you or acts it in pursuit of darker motives

Well spoken. The "planting the seeds" of civilizational Christianity image is derived, I believe, from Ayaan Hirsi Ali's comments at the ARC conference. However, I have one comment in response to Douglas Murray's saying that we need to acknowledge the spring from which our culture has sprung. I would contend that acknowledging the spring is not sufficient, it is necessary to drink from that spring; acknowledging the source is little better than admiring the cut flower. That said, we need more outspoken and well spoken influencers like these two men.

Such an interesting discussion. I see the danger of crushing Christianity in this country (and Europe) as being the danger of the vacuum left behind which will be rapidly filled by the next strongest religion which is currently Islam. - secularism, humanism or atheism is not nearly strong enough to withstand positive beliefs perhaps because it’s a denial or reaction, not a belief in anything above. Who would die for secularism? Not many. But Christianity allows such non-belief to co exist peacefully beside faith- and we learnt our lesson on that following the civil war in England a few centuries ago…(no more burning at the stake). Yet still most mainstream media is allergic to Christianity and mentioning God or Christ Jesus and even Christmas has become the province of Santa and Elf’s and shops etc, not the nativity anymore, or the beauty of holiness or the thrill of coming out out of church with a lovely day ahead. These are not spoken of enough.

Faith . Jesus came back . What is so clear to me is the fact he didn’t glorify himself ( although he was the most awe inspiring appearance..totallywonder ours )his message was immediately about God . He lifted his arms into the Heavens and praised God . There was not a second where he appeared that he was wanting me to look at his marvellous miraculous image . That didn’t need to be established, he just was . His message is Thanksgiving and Praise to God . I love that it was all about his Father our Father . Humanity’s Father.

Jesus also, because He loved her and wanted to bring her to Him, told the adulterous woman to go and “SIN NO MORE”. Professor David Wells, in his book “Losing Our Virtue” writes that “the two most important cultural changes that have happened in the twentieth century regarding ourselves … are the shift from character to personality and from nature (meaning human nature) to self-consciousness (meaning being focused on the self). Worth a read. Would be interesting to hear a discussion with this man. Having said that, it does amaze me, that Douglas Murray maintains his intellectual honesty regarding Christ and Christianity despite his lifestyle being at odds with the tenets of both and delivers what could be described as sermons to rival what one can hear in the best of churches these days.

Scripture also tells those of us within the body of believers to help restore them. Galatians 6:1 Brothers and sisters, even if a person is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual are to restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you are not tempted as well.”

I have no doubt that an intellectually honest person like Douglas Murray is, indeed, wrestling with his own beliefs as they come up against what he clearly discerns happening all around him. I have little to no concerns about Mr. Murray’s sexuality and I leave that wrestling to him, knowing that the people he is associating himself with and the examples of their own lives and confessions of their faith as the reason for those lives will have the effects that they can only have on an honest conscience. “He who walks with wise men will become wise”.

I have empathy for those who have no faith because it is quite literally “a leap of faith“ to choose to believe in that which cannot be substantiated and this is a leap too far for many. Where would the value of a faith be if we knew of Gods existence beyond doubt? That would just be rule by fear. I am not a church goer myself but my upbringing was within the Church of England, which I admired for its former tolerance and sense of service, though sadly it appears increasingly lost nowadays. My simple faith tends to stem primarily from the parables that were so much a part of my childhood worship experience. I feel that I am acquainted with Jesus and I always ask myself what would he do in any given situation! For clarity, I am certainly no Jesus prophet myself and merely a humble admirer of his. Many of today’s latter day social media prophets influencers, however, seem to wish to give the impression that they are of his calibre but I see precious little evidence of that.

Douglas mentions the incident of the woman taken in adultery from the Book of John; if you remember Jesus was sitting on the ground teaching the people when the elders brought the woman to him for judgement. Understand the woman was in fact guilty, and Jesus saying at the end to her, "Go and sin no more," confirms that, but was is really interesting is that while all of this was going on he was writing something in the dirt in front of him with his finger. The scripture doesn't tell us what he was writing, but one theory scholars propose is that he was writing the sins of all those who had brought the guilt woman there to be judged by Jesus. So, when Jesus says, "All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” they all knew that they were condemned themselves, so they all melted away one by one. Puts a real spin on the story doesn't it? And it's not that being caught in adultery is ok in Christianity. That bit of scripture is very deep and has a broad and expansive interpretation, is full of god's mercy who has full knowledge of our sinfulness.

@@postscript67 Even if,.... there is still no historical evidence that Jesus did or said that. 2nd century means around 100 - 150 years after Jesus death. I wouldn't choose Augustin as a reliable source, especially knowing how misogynistic he was. And talking about scandals: the whole Christianity was "a scandal" by pretty much all moral standards of the time. One more wouldn't make any difference. But I agree with Douglas; Christian tradition even in times of Muhammad was morally at least 300 years ahead of Islam. @@tochiRTA I agree that certain values can be said to be held in common among human beings. The Apostle Paul says as much in Romans 2. C. S. Lewis compiled several sayings showing as much from different sources in The Abolition of Man. However, your assertion that “Christian values” do not exist is demonstrably false. Let me provide a couple early examples of the ways Christian values were distinguished from Greco-Roman values. Marital fidelity is taught throughout the Bible (cf. Matthew 5:28; 19, Hebrews 13:4), yet, by contrast, Apollodorus writes, “We have courtesans for pleasure, concubines for the daily tending of the body, and wives in order to beget legitimate children...” (Appollodorus ‘Against Neaira’). In Diognetus (commonly found in collections of the Apostolic Fathers), the author among other things, argues that Christians, while following local customs, are nonetheless marked off as different from their host cultures. One example he provides is, “they do not expose their offspring” (5:6). We know from multiple sources, including Longus, Daphnis and Chloe, that the Greeks and Romans exposed theirs. For a full historical treatment of the question of Christian values and their impact on Western civilization, I recommend Tom Holland’s (the historian, not the actor) book, Dominion. Cheers!
