Someone with an explosives license and license to own nuclear materials from the NRC needs to try form 1-ing a nuclear weapon. I couldn’t imagine the panic of the ATF guys reading that.

Maybe we can finally get privately-founded development of a nuclear shaped charge "tunnel bore". The significantly higher power density of a nuke allows for scaling the thing up from tank-armor-plate-thick to over a mile. That could make a trans-atlantic tunnel feasible to construct.

Eh, I wouldn't say you'll go broke. If you have a lathe and a true patriot boner you can fill a meat freezer with the damn things for less than the cost of a fully transferable machine gun.

Fun fact: In Sweden, hand grenades went under the category of fireworks up until fairly recently. That meant it was legal for anyone over 18 to buy and own. That lead to some spectacular effects among the criminal gangs down south. :D

I've read your IG complaint and am impressed. If you've not already gotten legal training, perhaps you should, take and pass the bar exam and hang out a shingle so that others might use your services. You said in your complaint that you only wanted to get this and a couple of other transfers approved, nothing more, and it appears that you have prevailed. That being said, inquiring minds want to know..... specifically, exactly what action the IG took upon receipt of your complaint. I would encourage you to file a triplet (minimum) of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, to the ATF, NFA Branch specifically, and to the IG requesting ALL administrative correspondence, written, electronic, verbal or other regarding the specific transfer in question, disapprovals and justifications, eventual approval and IGs investigation into your complaint. THAT would be an interesting read. Well done, sir.

I don't see him "playing" with anything. Those things see far more movement and abuse while a soldier is packing them in combat. A little waiving around of one isn't going to hurt anything. He could drop it on a hard concrete floor and it would be fine. So long as the pin isn't pulled there's nothing to worry about. He knows what he's doing. Lol. 🙂

Dont worry it takes a decent amount of pressure to pull the pin its not gonna just fall out. By design the pin is made to stay in there soldiers have these in their vests and run around with them drop them etc, if they can withstand that then its not gonna just fall out.

I would love to see them make a video detailing the process on getting such such a license. I've been very slowly learning everything there is to know about this field of study and I would one day love to be able to get the lisence. The FBI has already cleared me and I am in good standing with them, don't know if that matters or not, but it seems helpful.

On the form 1 I see they want an explosives license or permit number if you are making an explosive type DD. But it's legal to make explosives for non-commercial use in the US so what gives? Do you know if anyone has pressed them on that?

AlwaysBored it’s legal, but you can’t mix explosives and store them overnight, that’s when the explosives magazine comes it along with the permits. Try submitting clarifying you won’t possess explosives until the day of using tannerite in a pipe bomb ect. That should work if your state has nothing against it.

Tax stamp is 200, magazine is probably going to cost over 1000, not to mention getting your fire Marshall to sign off on it. No idea on the grenade

I don't know if you are going to read this but I don't understand how you would make a form 1 grenade. I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that just the fuzes are considered DDs. I have yet to see anywhere that would sell you a working fuze without it be part of an already completed DD.

As far as I know, which is just enough to know that I don’t want to get into explosive destructive devices, the fuse is classified as an explosive and you can get them with a Federal Explosives License. If you have a FEL, you can also get the explosives to fill the grenade. After receiving your approved Form1, you can assemble it, store it in your magazine, transport it as you would in a magazine, etc. As a non FEL holder, you’re extremely limited. I’m fairly sure that you can file the form 1, and once approved, build and USE your grenade. You can’t buy the fuse or the explosives, but you theoretically could manufacture them right before setting it off. I don’t know how many people are going to manufacture high explosives and detonators in field conditions, but it’s possible. The fuse is probably going to be the trickiest. A small amount of sensitive explosive to set of a larger amount of less sensitive explosives that has the energy to set off the main charge. Ie a primer to ignite a set length of safety fuse, setting off flash powder, setting off .22lr sensitive tannerite, setting off the main charge of anfo, tannerite, nitrocellulose, etc. If you really want a destructive device, form1’ing a pipe bomb would be a million times easier. Pay your tax, engrave your pipe, put a piece of fuse in it. When you want to use it, go to your reloading bench and grab a can of smokeless powder out of the cupboard. Fill it up right before you set it off. I personally don’t want to send shrapnel everywhere, so I don’t want to deal with the hurdles. It would be different if I could form 4 it, NOT have to have a FEL if I stored/transported the fuse and grenade separately. Then I would buy one “Just because I can!”. I would probably wait to set it off until I knew if my kids wanted it after I passed away or not. If they didn’t, I would go out in the middle of a huge field and dig a hole to hide in, notify the police/fire department before throwing it. “Because I can” is my only interest in them. They seem more dangerous than what they’re worth, unless you actually believe in a zombie apocalypse. I would pay decent money to be able to actually throw a live one. Kinda like the machine gun rentals or tank experiences. I would hate to see the faces of the lawyer and insurance person when a company ran that by them though. NOPE!!!

So, how much did all of the certificates cost to register it to you? Was it just the usual theft of $200, or were there others too?

I can understand why some one at ATF would be like; "Wait this guy wants a hand grenade? And the laws allow him to actually own it? That's literally an explosive weapon, we can't let this be a regular thing." .... granted any one can make a pipe bomb but still. Interesting a private citizen can own a grenade.

Honestly at this point they've been vetted and licensed. Practically the ATF doesn't or shouldn't care unless something shady comes up. If anything does go wrong they have some one to trace it back to. Which is kind of why they don't sell grenades to the public, liability. It's the people that don't want register their item is what should be more concerning.

So if you decided to detonate it would it be legal to do so under "safe" conditions?

form 1 is quicker these days anyway, with regards to you as an FFL, if it was just you (i imagine being a part owner complicates this) and you (for some reason) surrendered the FFL would all the form 2'd NFA items have to be sold off? Or would it just be post sample MGs?

Alex Agius if your a sole proprietor than everything but post sample MG’s would would get transferred to you as an individual tax free. However if it was created on a LLC ect, then it would revert possession to the LLC and should the LLC be closed, than you’d have to transfer everything paying the tax on a form 4. You’d also be screwed if the LLC had premay sample MG’s.

Yes. The launcher is a destructive device based on the bore. Each explosive rounds counts as a separate destructive device. $200 tax stamp a piece. Chalk rounds and such don't go through any extra fee though. If I remember correctly.
