Episode 281: The History Of WWE Home Video
At the end of 2023 was an end of an era; as with the release of Survivor Series 2023, it was the end of the line for WWE & physical media releases. Starting in 1985 under the Coliseum Home Video label, the then WWF released VHS'(until 2005), Betamax's(until 1992), Laderdisc's(the 1st 4 releases in 1985), DVD's(starting in 1999), & Blu-Ray's(starting in 2008) to the masses. Between 1985 & 1997 it was under the Coliseum label, later WWF Home Video from 1998 until the name change in 2002, then WWE Home Video from the name change in 2002 until December 2023. This video will be covering the history of WWE in the physical media market; starting with the Coliseum Home Video line, the WWF Home Video line, ending with the WWE Home Video line. Talking the history of, some of the releases, what to do if you want a full collection, & more.

My memories with WWE DVDs are borrowing them from the nearby library. Some of them included the History of the Intercontinental and WWE titles, 50 greatest finishing moves, History of the United States Championship, among others. When are Goldust and the New Day gonna get a documentary?!

One of the most obscure things I had seen within the WWE Home Video department was finding out that some releases that were on DVD were also on the PSP through their UMDs. Going through the Wikipedia page for Wrestlemania 24 was how I found out that Wrestlemania 24 was available on the PSP UMD, so I snatched that up from an eBay listing when I found it last year. Kind of cool to have WWE media on a portable system such as that.

WWE Home Video was awesome. I'm sad they stop doing it cause it's awesome to own the physical copies in their original format. You had a lot of amazing releases to come out especially during the Attitude Era and the Ruthless Aggression Era.

Apparently the reason the Survivor Series Anthology was left incomplete because WWE got in trouble for the Hart & Soul DVD set because it featured footage of Owen Hart against the wishes of Owen’s widow Martha in the same year they planned to release the remaining volumes.

I remember buying two VCDs of Survivor Series 2003 (back in the Philippines a long time ago, they sell WWE VCDs and DVDs) because the show is split into two VCDs with the first one containing Team Angle vs Team Lesnar as well as Kane vs Shane McMahon while the second set contains Team Austin vs Team Bischoff as well as Undertaker vs Vince McMahon and Goldberg vs HHH. And speaking of DVDs, I got the Hell in a Cell Anthology, Edge: A Decade of Decadence and the Summer Slam 2007 DVD.

I got into wrestling in 1998. A videostore in my town had a whole gigantic section of Coliseum video WWF videos. Thats how I started watching classic wrestling along with the current Attitude Era stuff. Eventually they started selling videos from that store and I still have the VHS of Royal Rumble 1990, Summer Slam 1990, Wrestle Mania 13 and more. For Christmas I got the Three Faces of Foley VHS. I think I wore out that tape I watched it so much.

Of all the PPVs released through Coliseum Home Video only 2 didn’t have their own release. Tuesday in Texas and No Holds Barred: The Match/The Movie, the latter for obvious reasons since New Line Cinema I’m sure would only allow the movie to be its own release. Both were on a SuperTape copy.

I personally am not moving away from physical WWE media as it is more reliable as the streams get edited madly and especially now with the Vince McMahon scandal. I do hope that WWE reconsider as there are still people who prefer a physical product to own and Amazon in the UK always has top DVD sales for the WWE dvds.

The editing of the PPVs on the VHS versions is fascinating considering they also added footage as "Coliseum Video exclusives!" The ones that stick out to me the most are Royal Rumble 89 and 91 because both had entire matches cut out! The 89 version lost the Haku/Harley Race match and the 91 version lost a bout between Koko B Ware and The Mountie. Considering the Rumble match itself is long, I guess it's not surprising that an entire match would be cut to ensure the main attraction is presented in full.

The most notable VHS Tape I owned was The WWF's Most Unusual Matches as well as WrestleManias 2 & III. The last video I bought was the History of Mid-South after WWE obtained their tape library and I felt that DVD didn't do Mid-South's history justice. I was a subscriber to WWE's On-Demand service until the Network was created. I loved seeing the old matches from the 70's and 80's and was able to record them on a DVD recorder. I hope this doesn't become an overwhelming trend of eliminating physical media. Not everything is available to stream and with McMahon's issues, it'll be an editing mess.

They're sitting pretty tight on all that footage with apparently no intention whatsoever of posting it to the WWE/Peacock deal. Doubtful that they'll post it to Netflix either. Whenever I run into a WWE DVD at a store I buy it, provided it's older material. Why buy a DVD of recent footage? Just as good as the ECW Rise and Fall video is ECW Bloodsport. As far as numbers go it’s confusing up till attitude era the spine numbers are acquired only missing a few numbers like during new generation but once you get to dvds it stops at WWF288 undertaker my yard but like coliseum video side series the number fill up the WWF600 series is the wrestlemania legacy collection WWF802 is Jesse Ventura WWF809&810 are the rock n wrestling cartoons WWF825&826 memorable moments of 2000 and WWF830 is Austin vs McMahon but has those were produced so we’re thier dvds starting at WWF1000 so the vhs’ stops at 288 and dvds start at 1000 whole lot of empty numbers n most vhs’ from after mania 15 are dvds except survivor series 99 and the vhs n dvd numbers don’t match up one will be WWF229 n dvd will be WWF1010 also between 2004and 2007 the dvd spine numbers just jump all around and you can’t put them in number order as future dvds come before few years later or earlier dvd has late number spine it’s weird

I know I’m commenting a lot but the 97 wrestlemania collection is the most fullest n most original versions of mania buttttt mania 2 don’t have the ads nor the music highlights after the ads in between areas also it edits out the bad audio hogan interview mess up n jesse Ventura shoot to it mania 5 instead of showing brother love running up ramp it’s a hard cam view without gorilla saying look at that jess n jesse says I rather not with wa intact on coliseum video also Morton Downey jr had different angles n cut it down a bit rockin robin bitch isn’t on there with gorilla n jesse intro after where jesse is wrestling a mask coliseum mania 5 don’t have jesse posing 13 has different crowd shots but 11 is where it’s fucked up csude it’s a replay version from that time with roddy piper interrupting everything tho it does have press conference afterwards n aftermath of title match and SALT N PEPA legacy version I think is a coliseum copy or if it has salt n pepa its probably the best version then

Um? you got the name change wrong cause I have these now during name change triple h n hogan dvds we’re being made before change but we’re released near end n after name change with a few if any censoring of the WWF also backlash in April 2002 where hogan wins title dvd is heavily edited from nWo music flairs music to his 92 version n takers theme edited but hogans voodoo child is intact first wwe ppv is judgment day in may 19 2002 tho both were wwf ppvs labels said WWE and this was the translation

Wrestlemania 5,6,7 are notorious for those cut matches 5 don’t even have rockin robin national anthem the diebise Roberts match cuts out the wave harts vs rhythm n blue mania 5 you see cuts but praise them cause it’s unnoticeable also they dub commentary over to smooth transition watch steamboat cowboy orton on best of 3 then watch best of 6 version or mania edits you’ll notice it but won’t care the career ending match it was a sloppy edit n my n neighbor was like wtf

Who cares what they go for? Any sealed tape you come across is most likely resealed. Nobody kept their tapes sealed. They opened them and enjoyed them. People are so obsessed with money these days.
