Card Subject To Change: The History Of Survivor Series Replacements

Спорт

The term "card subject to change" is a term used in combat sports & pro wrestling; where at any time for any reason the card for a show can be changed from what it was originally. The term is used that way promotions can skate past allegation's of false advertisement. When it comes to the term "card subject to change" and WWE, the Survivor Series is the show where it's been used the most. From a participant in a match being changed from 1 to another, multiple on 1 team, multiple on both teams, team captains being changed, multiple matches in a night get changed, even in a rare case an entire match gets scrapped. I went through Survivor Series history & here is going over every time a card reshuffling took place at WWE's Fall Classic; from Superstar Billy Graham being taken out of the very 1st Main Event, to journeyman Scott Casey getting a PPV payday, when the entire 1993 card changed, the infamous Stone Cold bait and switch, all the way to modern times when champions change hands before champion vs champion matches, & changes happening because...well just because. I list the reshuffling & give the reason for it, whether it's the shoot reason, the kayfabe reason, or combinations of the both.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, Mr. Perfect replacing the Ultimate Warrior, teaming with Randy Savage at Survivor Series 1992 is the best replacement/angle ever done. Mr. Perfect was essentially written off by that point as an active wrestler, but it made sense from a storyline perspective for him to come out of retirement, and be his tag team partner. The angle aired before that on Prime Time with Flair, Razor, Heenan, Savage and Perfect was perfectly done, no pun intended.

@@WeAreProWrestlingI've always had a theory about why that angle worked. It's well-known that Perfect wanted back in physically, if possible (see Summerslam 92, Macho vs. Warrior), so my guess is that Heenan, Perfect, and Razor, all AWA buds, had this angle planned out over road trips in the prior few months since Hall had come to the WWF. When you're that meticulous, you're gonna make gold.

yeah, rewatching that PPV, Heenan did such a good job selling this as the biggest betrayal ever that it made this such a hot angle, it really felt like a big, big deal and not some replacement thing. Shame the finish to the match was a dud, but without a doubt a blueprint of how to make the best out of a bad situation. But also LOL that still to this day the thumbnail on the network for SS 1993 shows Ultimate Warrior on it.

The 1999 WWF Survivor Series began a chain of events that would lead up to WrestleMania XVI on April 2, 2000. It would be the insertion of The Big Show into The Triple Threat World Wrestling Federation Championship Match replacing "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. That changed everything.

A little note on Lawler's Knights in 1993: they were supposed to be Valentine, Terry Funk, and Jimmy Snuka and they were all supposed to be unmasked. However, Snuka feel through and Funk said his horse was sick so only Valentine was left as the Blue Knight. The other two got replaced by Jeff Gaylord and Barry Horowitz. Because of those being somewhat lackluster names, the unmasking idea was scrapped as well.

3;48 What's forgettable about Boris Zhukov being on The Mercenaries? For one thing he was Nikokai's ex-Bolsheviks tag partner so a natural matchup there. For another thing, he and Slaughter had feuded in the AWA so it made nice sense for Traitor Slaughter to ally with him (see also Adnan and later on Mustafa/Iron Sheik). Finally it was also a secret reunion of the Cobra Corps tag team from 1983 Jim Crockett Promotions when Zhukov - then known as Private Jim Nelson - was Slaughter's tag partner - along with fellow Private and Slaughter's NWA World Tag Team Championship partner (and Nelson's Mid Atlantic tag championship partner) Don Kernodle (who in '83 was in the WWF with his next NWA tag title partner Ivan Koloff before they both returned to JCP in 1984 to introduce Nikita) - before Nelson turned babyface on Slaughter and Kernodle and feuded with them. So there was a lot of interesting back history there.

For the triple threat WWF title match in 1999. Solomonster talked about it and said in his opinion Test should’ve been added in instead. And he made some good points on why and I agree. Test was pretty popular. Not like Stone Cold & Rock. He got reactions when his music hit. And the whole thing with the wedding with Stephanie that happened it could’ve added more to the feud (if you wanna call it that) with Test and Triple H battling over the WWF Title and the hand of Stephanie instead of having Tets pretty much be punked out by DX every time and never get his payback on some form. Plus Test wasn’t in action that night. Although it would’ve changed what happened with Big Show afterwards. @@ajk ya know that does explain it. Cause if I recall in 2000 it was said that Big Show got a bit of a big head and out of shape. Hence he got busted down to OVW for both conditioning and humbling. I think it was Undertaker’s idea. But either way Test seemed more logical since he was involved in the babyface McMahon family-DX feud. He was in 2 survivor series style matches on Smackdown back to back weeks (him, Shane McMahon, Rock, & Stone Cold vs DX than another but with Kane replacing Stone Cold who was the enforcer). Cause Big Show just came outta nowhere into the title picture and winning the title

In 2023, nothing much has changed as far as Survivor Series Replacements is considered. Aliyah is about to replaced.

What i didn't like it was 4 vs. 5 in Survivor Series 2007. I still feel that Team Triple H should have gotten someone to replaced Matt Hardy. Because in past Survivor Series and others that came after this one if a wrestler is unable to wrestle in the match the team would get a replacement. They should have gotten a replacement in my opinion.

Yes they should've replaced Matt in that match, but since they couldn't, it was what it was. Same with No Way Out 03 (different subject but hear me out) when Edge was attacked seemingly by Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin before the 6 man tag team match and it became 3 on 2 with just Chris Benoit and Brock Lesnar against Team Angle.

@@Connor-ki8zv In storyline they could have gotten someone to replaced Matt Hardy. I could have named a quite a few wrestlers that they could have picked.

Now I know why it's called, 'Survivor Series,' cause you're lucky if you survive getting replaced on the main card! EDIT: You said you weren't hating on Maven, but I KNOW you're hating on Jinder. You 'hinder the Jinder!'

Why did Curt Hennig leave WWE in 1993 just before Survivor Series?

A lot of different things have been said over the years(back injury, creative differences, personal problems) Though if I had to guess it had to do with his back so that way he could cash back in on his Lloyds of London insurance policy

@@WeAreProWrestling Yeah I remember the '93 Survivor Series well. It was at the old Boston Garden. It felt kinda weird when both Hennig and Lawler weren't on the show, even though they were originally advertised. Then Owen started turning heel on Bret. I also remember Bobby Heenan was hilarious at ringside playfully mocking Stu Hart saying "hey Stu, wake up!" That was Heenan's last PPV with WWE and I wish he stayed.
