I never in a million years would have thought a guy showing mouse traps would become a rockstar......but it's happened

I wonder if the pet mice are by now conditioned to think, "Hmmm, I smell peanut butter ... that means the floor is about to drop from under me." But they don't seem to mind.

Being so genetically similar, it amazes me how smart and wary rats are, versus their tiny and dumb fellow rodents.
I swear Shawn can make a whole series of head-to-head trap testing as well as improving on old designs. Excellent as always, and sending warm thoughts to you, your family, and all your local critters!
An interesting mouse behavior thing I noticed between the two traps that could help with future designs. Notice on the original, the mice would walk on the raised edge of the plate, while on the redesign, they would walk straight across the middle of the plate, which is higher. So if you want to control how a mouse approaches a trap, they'll stick to a higher path.

Sir, have you no shame?
We discovered a massive mouse population in the garage of the house we moved in, and this was a quick trap we could engineer with what we had and after 8 snap traps failing, we already have 2 in the bucket! This is no cost if you have some extra clutter and truly effective. Thank you so much for sharing this quick fix!

he don’t need no distracting smartphone, i’ve thought about giving up my iphone 12 for a dumb phone.
you dont even need the paper plate. I just put a half inch of bird seed in a five gallon bucket and they jump on down. Then they can't jump back out. Each morning I usually have two or three mice in the bucket from the night before until they are all gone.
The is basically a DIY version of Shawn's favorite trap, the "Flip and Slide". Even though that trap isn't too expensive, if you have a large area to rid of mice, it's nice to see you can set up something to get similar results without spending anything.

I keep saying to my phone: Don't Go, It's a Trap !!! But they never hear me.
it makes me wonder why the people whom originally invented the paper plate mousetrap didn't make the plate upside down like yours, i mean you can simply look at it and see it would work far better in the upside down position. thank you for this video Shawn.

Lower center of gravity on the plate is all I can immediately think of. Probably keep it from tilting _quite_ as much immediately, and lowers the chance of it flipping all the way around.
@EAWhite1984
Жыл бұрын
I think it is a matter of simplicity. if the wire is centered on the bucket and the plate offset then if it flips all the way over the plate would catch the opposite lip of the bucket. then some of the time it would be facing up like Shawn made his to be. you just wouldn't need a string to reset the trap. I would think that having the bait be on the underside of the plate would work well though since it would mean the mice wouldn't be able to as easily get it.

Having the original orientation could lead to issues in rain unless there are some holes to drain the plate.

Great haul, Shawn! Modifications seemed quite effective
I bought 2 of the trap door bucket traps & have had success in less than 24hrs. One placed in my basement & one in the garage. Exceeded my expectations!!! Thanks Shawn
Really good modification on the trap. To me it seems that the bait over the edge of the upside down plate makes the mouse commit where the original design does not. Simple and effective. Thanks for posting.
Yours is way more effective, Shawn! The cool thing about this trap is it's simplicity and easy to make... and you don't have to reset it every time you catch a mouse... Probably the best and most practical trap you have shown...
A couple of your modifications made a good trap amazing, great vid
The changing centre of gravity helps with the improved version. It balances better once it tilts. The original version shifts its centre of gravity towards the bigger end, making it less likely to catch mice.
I absolutely loved the footage of the wild animals, you should keep doing that on the side
The trail cam footage of the bobcat was priceless. Nice healthy ecosystem at your beaver pond.
I missed the long videos like this, catching several mice. And it was a great idea to put one camera for a view from top.
That barn sure has no shortage of mice, even after all these demonstrations. Just imagine if they were not being caught!
Shawn!. Long, long-time sub. I was subbed when you could show the kill. Very Sad about what YT has done to you. But I must say, this vid is one of your best, most informational, and most valuable ever.

Plastic plates and the wire a little closer to the center of the plate. I wouldn't change anything else, but I'd put water in the bottom.
I'm ready to watch some bushcraft videos as well. I'm stoked to see this video. I've got some mice problems recently one chewed on my water line.

Bobcat was a great bit of video!
A man that uses a flip phone is definitely an expert on making do efficiently with next to nothing! Love your beaver pond! I hope there’s fish in it! Probably mink too!
Gorgeous footage of the beaver dam
if you put the pivot just a little closer to the edge of the plate you could mount it centrally in the bucket and it would flip and hit the other rim. The photo from the article looks like it has a ramp on both sides as though mice accessing from either side is the plan
what's the best bait and how to dispatch? thanks for the vid. Also, what did you use for the wire?
Simple and effective, especially with your modifications.

I found a random mouse in an empty bucket this morning and reneged this video. I'm going to make this right now. But I noticed the mouse in the bucket this morning was almost able to jump out. How do you make sure they don't get out?
Nice job on the video! I've built several styles of humane traps that all work with mice, I'd like to see something suitable for rats. I wish you had included side by side photos of the 2 different types of mice you were talking about.
Great improvements you did.

Thanks for another great video! I'm currently battling rats in my attic. Been changing the bait every day and they're coming closer, but have not been caught yet. Next I'm going to try bacon and then salami.

We use a blob of peanut butter and stick a couple of sunflower seeds in it, too.
Looks like bloody mouse Disney land on the farm - time to make more buckets and take down the entire colony ... and use some 25 or 50 gallon barrels for the rats ...
Very creative test!
This works until the mice learn to take turns with one always acting as a counterweight on the stable side.
I like how the guy had 'stairs' on the wooden ramp.
If they still alive, how to get rid of them?
I wonder if the wild mice consider his pet mice to be class traitors, for helping him test these lol
What trail cam does he use? We are interested in getting one.
After you catch the illegal mouse…do you catch and release…like bus it to the interior somewhere and release it?
Very satisfying!!
This one is soooo good and easy, great for my grandparents cause is very simple to asssamble and use. The bobcat was epic! Good weekend!
The new and improved for the win!
Nice video I may have to give this one a try. Do you know if this would work on chipmunks? We are having a major issue with these around the house.
A further improvement would be to use a foam-core plastic plate instead of a paper plate to give the trap some moisture resistance when setting it up in a damp place. Otherwise, It is a great idea.

In one of his other videos he used the same kind of bucket... He "caught" a rat, but it was able to very easily jump out. He actually caught several baby rats first, and their mother actually jumped into the bucket and carried each one out with her mouth. He also used this type of bucket for a death-trap for mice and rats by adding water. However, he didn't make the water level high enough for the rats, so the rat got dunked and then jumped out. So it might work with rats if you added enough water so the rat would drown and not be able to jump out..... Hmmmmm.....maybe I'll try this. It looks like I have rodents on my lot....

Shawn, just found your channel researching how to get rid of some rodents in my garage. Sorry if you have addressed this in previous videos, but it seems that you work with the mice without using gloves. How do you mitigate the risk of spreading disease or deterring them from smelling your scent and avoiding the traps you set?
