“When I wrote ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, *nothing went into it that had not happened in real life somewhere at some time* . “The reason I made that rule is that I didn’t want anybody saying, ‘You certainly have an evil imagination, you made up all these bad things.’ I didn’t make them up.” - _Margaret Atwood_

Indeed. Atwood based the government of Gilead on Orwell's '1984', Atwood actually began writing the book in 1984. The part about industrial and toxic waste making the female population barren - the infertility crisis - is based upon the 1984 Bhopal Gas Leak Tragedy in Bhopal, MP, India, which was one of the worst industrial disasters in history. I personally have relatives who live near Bhopal, and they still see the visible effects of the gas leak (the gas being methyl isocyanate) amongst the population of Bhopa. However, I am not aware of sterility being one of those effects, the problems were mostly respiratory.

It’s that she meant strictly by law. The situation that caused the overthrow of the USA is fictional; but the laws instituted by this hyper sexist government are based on real laws that have ruled women at one time or another. That’s the verisimilitude of the literary piece.

Carmela Women have to wear Burkas in some Islamic counties as costumes to denote their female status. The red cloaks are a futuristic example of what has already happened as a specific thing to answer your question. After the ceremony between Commander Lawrence and June when Fred asked June is she alright, when June told him “at least it wasn’t you” in disgust and walked off, Fred looked hurt and in love with June at the same time. Serena saw the lust and love in his eyes for June and in my opinion that was the final straw for her. That’s why she went through turning him in. She knows he’s in love with June and she also is hopeful for a knew life while at the same time wanting to see baby Nicole.

I totally agree. Growing up in impoverished areas and seeing a lot of child abuse and neglect I can see how that would twist Lydia's world view about "sinful women". And also the comment she made to June about her sister's baby dying and it not being her (Lydia's) fault. I think that's much more powerful and interesting than, "Oh Lydia couldn't get laid and that's why she went evil and started lashing out at all the women who could get laid." It's in my opinion a very lazy and immature story line, that boils all women's motivation down to if they could get a penis or not.

Babies up until the age of 8 months naturally can hold Their breath under water for up to 2 mins. It’s a survival tactic in humans. So the baby likely wouldn’t have drown. I think that’s important to point out.. hypothermia would be far more of a concern in that situation.. the baby could’ve went under the water for longer in most cases and not taken a breathe. It’s just natural survival at its finest. And boy being a man did you really not get the Luke story line right whatsoever lol had nothing to do with “‘not being his baby”.. did most people miss the circumstances these woman were living through? Lol beaten, raped, isolated, hung on a wall etc. c’mon. Luke isn’t the average male especially in this reality.

Luke is a different kind of man. When he was separated from his wife he didn’t play around with both women. He fell in love with June and gave wife #1 a divorce. What he did wasn’t right but the way he handled himself and in the end showed respect to both women made him alright in my book. My favorite line was when June was shocked that he would leave Annie and he said “what else would I do?”... same with baby Holly/Nichole... What else would he do?.. I love him lol

  • @AppreciativeViewer

tbh as much as I appreciated the thematic significance of the show, it became difficult to get through due to storyline repeats: June nearly escapes, someone else nearly escapes, resistance plan buildup, resistance plan backfire/consequences, Gilliad character (Serena, Lydia, a Commander etc.) starts being sympathetic only to reverse course...and then finding out (as a late viewer who hasn't read the books yet) that [spoiler] we don't see closure for June and her daughter. I mean, much of it makes sense in the scope of things, but probably would've been easier to digest if not for binge-watching. Anyway, wanted to know what happened, and getting a solid recap + stills for a fraction of the time was hella helpful. You've done a service haha 👍

You misinterpreted that it wasn’t a break up I don’t think it’s anything this episode and other episodes aare about how much June is still in love with her husband. But there’s a good chance that she’ll never ever be able to be a wife to him again because of what she’s gone through it’s almost like if I do get out there’s a good chance we won’t be able to be together because I won’t be able to get over the trauma of what I have to do what’s been done and what I have done but I still love you and I’m in love with you and I understand if our marriage falls apart if we ever meet again that’s what I got anyways. I don’t get why people are rooting for Nick in June I’m rooting for Luke in June I want to see their marriage conquer over the darkness of Gilead. I want to see their relationship because that can be a real thing. previous relationship conquering over trauma I don’t know. does anyone else get what I’m saying.

Scully818 completely get it.. My husband and I hVe been together almost 20 years. Since we were 15. People don’t stop to realize the situation or put themselves in that situation and think she no longer loves her husband or is “cheating” on him. That’s ridiculous lol They intentionally isolate, beat and rape these woman. Human nature to cling to any kind of normalcy or companion, especially when you don’t have much hope you’ll ever see your husband again. She yearns to see him again hit her character shows again and again what it’s like to be a parent and be selfless. People were irritated she didn’t get out over and over, but if you have children how can you blame her? She got one child out and refused to leave without the other.. I would do the same. We have 4 children and I can assure you my husband would want me to fight to get our kids out rather than just him and I together. It would be hell, but our kids come first. Always. Although, a few times I felt I would’ve done things a bit differently. I couldn’t have let my infant child go in someone else’s arms. I would’ve went as well and fought once I was with my husband and baby to either go back or rally the people/refugees in Canada to take them down with me. Eventually it’s going to happen anyways. Why stay and be tortured and not see your other child when you can still fight outside the lines and be with your baby, husband, best friend and refugees/government that has recently went against Gilliad

Can we note that all the flying we see is done in stripped down passenger aircraft? Apparently they had passenger aircraft ready, but since there's no tourism they converted them all to makeshift freighters.

A baby being born with a cord around its neck is very common (about 1/3 of births), but it is extremely rare for that to be the cause of a stillbirth. Baby does not use its lungs to breathe in utero. Unless a severe compression of the cord occurs, which the nature of the cord is designed to prevent, the baby's O2 supply remains constant, as long as the placenta is still attached to the uterine wall.

my daughter was born with the cord wrapped around her neck twice. it puts severe distress on the child because they immediately try to breathe when born and end up aspirating into their lungs. had she not been taken via emergency c-section she would likely not have survived according to literally every single doctor and nurse in the room (at least 20). she had a lot of fluid in her lungs and spent a month in the NICU. thank god she is okay now and has no issues.

Commander Lawrence is a fascinating character. He’s very utilitarian in his approach of politics, gender roles, and ethics. He basically designed Gilead, a very effective and utilitarian solution to a couple serious problems: environmental decline, pollution, the birth rate, male angst and nihilism, etc. He’s an eccentric for sure, a bit of a narcissist. He doesn’t let Emily go because it’s the right thing to do. He does it because she’s so intelligent and he respects her, and he knows she doesn’t belong there, but he doesn’t extend that view to all women. He assigns people value based on personal metrics: education and intelligence, how clever or entertaining they are, how interesting to him. He’s bored in Gilead. He doesn’t help the handmaids out of genuine respect for women or hate for Gilead, but as a kind of privilege flex. He knows he has this power and privilege. He’s bored in this place. Helping them manufactures intrigue and suspense and puts them at his mercy. It’s like all the art and books you see in his house that are banned and you don’t see anywhere else. He knows he can get away with this. It’s a flex.
