If whoever wrote this show isn't a veteran, either, soldier or civilian, he/she got pretty close. It depicts war trauma and mentality to the tea. And the recap is pure perfection just before the 5th kicks.

June told Serena, when they had their confrontation at Lincoln Memorial in Washington in season 3, that Serena can’t love, because she doesn’t know what love is. I think it’s true. I don’t think Serena even really loves the child she’s carrying. She loves the idea of being a mother, and she wants to be one at all costs. Everything is about her and her needs, it has never been about her child. She *is* Gilead, and Gilead is all about control. She has an obsession about motherhood, and it overshadows everything she does, just like many other narcissistic women who choose to be mothers. Those children end up suffering from their narcissistic abuse, because they can never fill the void their mothers have deep within their souls. Ultimately they will always be, and feel that they are, insufficient.

Hmm... people seemed to be disappointed in the final episode. Not me. Maybe because I only started watching this show a few months ago and watched all the seasons back to back. I had that same rage built up towards Fred and was happy to see him run and get hung. A bit dramatic, but people rarely get what they deserve like that so I'll take it. What I do agree with is this season dragged and wasn't as good as the others. It progressively has gotten worse. The constant June Kubrick stare should end immediately. Really liked the recap. Glad I found your channel. Thanks.

I never saw even one episode of The Handmaid's Tale until last month! I watched all five seasons over the course of three weeks (had to take breaks because I'm Black and it hits real life way too hard). I was sick of the June Stare into the camera, too. By the time I got to season 2, I was rolling my eyes at the end of every episode when the staring began. Anyhoo, the ending of season 4 was great for me because Fred deserved Every Single Thing That Happened To Him! I am NEVER - even through a movie - able to wish for redemption for a rapist.

Very good recap! Thanks. I thought Season 4 was fantastic so I’m surprised to hear comments from people who didn’t like it. You only made one tiny mistake that i noticed. During the Aunt’s dinner in episode 9, the Aunt who suggested that they cut out Ester Keyes’ tongue was not Aunt Irene, but in fact, Aunt Elizabeth. Before people accuse me of being nit-picky, the only reason I’m pointing this out is that Producer Bruce Miller has said that he plans to incorporate Margaret Atwood’s sequel The Testaments into the Handmaids series. If you read The Testaments, Aunt Elizabeth winds up being a continuing character working along side Aunt Lydia. So we will likely see more of her. But anyway, great summary! 👍👏

And did anybody notice how June has to be the absolute dumbest hero ever? She never had any plan, like at all. On at.least 4 occasions I counted she could have left before she even got pregnant. Than, I think a part of June liked the high drama and subjugation. She kept staying, using Hannah or Emily or Jeneen as the excuse, knowing she had 0 plan or ability to get them. And than she could have killed Fred, washed up, and been done. Why go home and rat yourself out? He died in Gilead. He was in the custody of Gilead. Canada, nor the US would care of what she did. Again, I think she enjoys the drama.

Thank you for doing the recaps! They are so useful to catching me up on a show without having to watch it! & I love Handmaids! I love hearing you bring up details I didn't notice or claryfying things that happened that I was confused about. There's a lot of questions I have regarding the "rules" and "laws" of this show's world - as well as tracking the timeline. But I'm not sure if the questions about the things in gilead matter at this point in the show so I'm not sure how far I wanna dive into finding out. I'm curious though how long June was actually in gilead. In the first ep serena says its junes 2nd posting. Well what happened in the first posting? How did she not get pregnant? And in gilead - do all commandars and wives attempt to have a baby on their own at all before using a handmaid. And how do they know who is fertile and who isn't. And how did fred knock up serena if he couldn't knock up anyone else in gilead.

In the 4th season, right after June gets into Canada, she and Luke are shopping in the store and June asks something like, “What have they done to chips in the past seven years?” So from that, it sounds like June was in Gilead for 7 years.

  • @maddieb.8514

From what I remember in the red center (where they take new hand maids to be trained) all the handmaid are women they discovered were furtile bc they had children and/or were on record having abortions. And none of them went to church and were deemed sinful so they're forced to be handmaid's. Remember in season 4 when June guilts the truck driver to taking her home with him? He had a wife and child and their were other families there. Those women weren't forced to be handmaid's though bc Gildead decided these women weren't living as sinfully as the women that are forced to be handmaid's. And I'm guessing they know who's furtile bc they preform exams. Serena was shot in the stomach years earlier so that's why she thinks she can't have children. Emily mentions at one point that even though she's a lesbian she wasn't sent to the colonies bc she has two good ovaries. So that lets us know Gilead knows of people's private doctor exams.

How they dragged out the book for this many seasons 🤔...I read the book decades ago and wasn't disappointed with the film that followed. I still have the 📼 VHS. I watched it when I heard it was coming out as a series and I have to say, it's a HUGE fail ( in MY very humble opinion). I do believe it can still be purchased ( the original film) on DVD and VHS 😉. It's 🍎's and 🍊's. It's a couple of hours as opposed to 4 years maybe 5? At my age... Your reviews are ACE and MORE interesting and although I do know how it ends🤫 I have really enjoyed listening to you and appreciate that you've wrapped up the last four years in less than eight hours. I feel like you've read the book 📖 to me 😊. Looking forward to hearing you recap the last few chapters 😉. If you get the chance to see the film, you won't regret it... THANK YOU again !!

Nah, that movie was trash. There were so many problems with the script that are documented. There's no way a 2-hour movie could adequately world-build Gilead and tell June's story. They were right to make it a series. I think they just made a mistake in the series of making one whole season nothing but torture p0rn. The Testaments (the sequel) will also be a series. I can't wait for that because The Testaments is an astonishing work by itself.

Some weaknesses in the writing irritate me from Season 3 (all seasons). It's like they can't decide who a character is so they make it muddy and leave ends dangling while pretending they are doing it on purpose. June's second Commander says horrendous things to her. Came out of no where. Then he's helping her. Then he says she uses her body to manipulate. They force him to have seggs w her. Wife is angry. It's like we need a clearer character and relationship arcs. It's okay if characters are unstable and back and forth. But it shouldn't feel like things hit you out of no where and makes no sense i.e. new commander going off on her. I appreciate that his mentally unstable wife is so clearly drawn. As is the one eyed handmaid. The only two that don't give me whiplash.

If I can say one thing about the “cheating” mentions in the video said towards June when she and Nick shared 2 onscreen kisses, June and Nick are truly love with each other, they have been through a lot together and made a child out of pure love. Yes they are both married but June is not the same woman who married Luke and Nick was forced to marry a minor… so it’s not like they are truly all in on both of their relationships. I have a feeling June and Luke are most likely going to stay friends and co parent Nicole when everything’s said and done but at the same time Nick’s situation is not certain. He has a very high and risky position in Gilaed so to me he might either stay where he’s at or die trying to be with June.
