In early scenes, they use Columbo's polite approach, then in the second half, Hammer takes over and starts to bribe people for info and rough up suspects saying "okay Columbo, now let's try things my way" before he grabs some hired muscle by the tie lol. I could see Columbo saying "you're very persuasive, Mr. Hammer."

In response your call for an alternate title, I instantly thought of "Hitting The Dirt". In keeping with this idiom for falling down, we have Columbo taking that rough tumble down the hill. Then we have the recollection of Jarvis' bullet "hitting the dirt" in the literal sense, ultimately causing his best-laid plans to do just that.

One of my favorite elements of these series (Columbo, McMillan and Wife, etc.) is the relentless 70s fashion and decor. The grand houses of the wealthy characters are so bizarrely (over-)decorated, I can’t look away. The copious amounts of dark wood, bits of odd chinoiserie, moss green velvet and gilt flourishes and massive light fixtures! Not to mention Bradford Dillman’s white corduroy leisure suit. Great video-Universal certainly got their money’s worth from that yellow Jag’s death leap, didn’t they?!

Another great review! Those Barnaby Jones clips remind me so much of the Beastie Boys' Sabotage video. Seeing that Columbo stunt was crazy. I thought it was legitimately an accident that they happened to capture on film. That literally happened to me as a kid walking down a steep hill with my family. I started picking up speed just like he did and tumbled at the end too, so I was genuinely concerned to see Columbo go down like that.

Spectacular deep dive. I was surprised at the mixed reviews of this one. I always love smarmy characters, so Jarvis was that typical style. Though I do think we should have gotten to learn more about him. All we learned about him is that he loves gardening, mean spirited, greedy, and hates his nephew. The music in this episode is so far my favorite of any Columbo episode (it's so good it gets used throughout Season 2 and 3 from time to time.). Columbo having a partner for an episode was also really nice. I would have loved for the younger detective to show up once a season. I think it could have made the explosive finale of Season 3 even better if Detective Wilson had some split feelings regarding Columbo and their superior. I think this episode also showed that Columbo still has some things to learn, using new tools and techniques helps him get to the bottom of this (literally) case.

You know I agree with you....but it would have been too tempting to make it a buddy/cop series which was not the creator's intention. In Breaking Bad, Jessie Pinkman was only supposed to be a one-off character, but the audience liked him so much he became a major character. That was also true with Spike in Buffy. They might have been smart to have let him back on only one more time.
Thank you for these videos. I came across Columbo bc of my mom and step dad. They watched then suddenly stopped after they’d seen all the episodes but I was hooked. I got into the show and haven’t stopped. It’s comforting watching these over and over like being at grandmas on a rainy Friday night sleeping under ten homemade blankets. Now that’s comfort to me. God bless. ❤

That definitely sounds like comfort ❤️
I liked this video before I even watched it. I totally agree about Wilson being featured once per season. It avoids the problem of giving Columbo a sidekick, but adds to the quality by giving Columbo a fellow officer to contrast with. By talking to a colleague, rather than suspects and witnesses all the time, we get to see a difference aspect of Columbo's thought process. Besides, Dishy and Falk have an obvious chemistry that works very well, so why wouldn't the producers want to take advantage of that? Oh well, I'm thankful for the two Wilson episodes that we have.

There’s a scene in Wilson’s one other appearance, “Now You See Him,” where Jack Cassidy referred to him mockingly as “Dr. Watson.” Just as in this episode, Wilson fell for all the false clues that would cast suspicion on somebody else, but in the end his knowledge of modern gadgets (a newer style of typewriter) led Columbo to a piece of evidence that our hero might never have figured out on his own. Having him show up once per season would’ve been nice, anything more than that would’ve turned it into a buddy-cop show instead of Columbo as the solo hero.

Being a Warhammer 40k player myself I had a gut feeling Warhammer'd be the first on the expensive hobby's. Glad to see my intuition's still sharp

Hello! I just discovered your channel, a fantastic idea you have come up with. A lifelong fan of Columbo, this is perfect. I'll always remember Bradford Dillman from his genuinely sadistic performance in "Compulsion", as one of the 2 teen thrill killers, based on the Leopold and Loeb case.

Coincidentally, that true story is also about a fake kidnapping that was meant to be a murder all along. Or did someone involved in the casting of this actually think of Dillman for that reason?
Amazing episode! Ok the issue with the gotcha is that, more than any other columbo gotcha, this was the most unconstitutional and completely inadmissible. You can’t just go into someone’s house with a metal detector. So it’s a bit over the top. Anyhow, you rock! My try: The Black Orchid Happy Holidays!

Thank you very much for your kindness and for sharing your thoughts on the gotcha! Columbo definitely does things that are just not ok in our world. Also, thank you for helping me with a new title suggestion! Happy Holidays, my friend ⭐

Catching up on your brilliant work this weekend. Another top-notch episode! I loved Greenhouse Jungle and had no idea the community was split on it. My suggestion for the episode title piggybacks off yours-- Sins of the Solarium. Thanks again for the effort and quality of these videos. Hope you're well.

I broke a rib at work a couple of days ago. I probably should've waited to watch this for at least a few weeks. I laughed so hard at Tony's face and what you said at 28:50. Oh well... it was worth it.

This might be bad but I came up with the title "Dirty Plants" It refers to Jarvis 'planting' evidence against the wife, and 'dirty' refers to the overall plan being illegal/immoral and the pile of dirt hiding the third bullet. Again, might be bad, but has hidden meaning at least. Also, great video as always

Love the review! And yeah, "The Greenhouse Jungle" is silly. "Misplaced Trust" maybe. And the wife ... I don't care what you think! I don't care so much that it makes me angry! Let me tell you that twice! Even though I don't know what you think! I still don't care!

Thank you for the new title suggestion, I like it! That's all that woman talks about.
I have no idea how you find out all the uncredited actors’ names. Very impressive. I especially appreciate the car info. Two notes: Oliver Nelson’s score is actually used in portions of 3 other Season 2 episodes (Nos. 5, 7, and 8), but he’s not credited for them. And there is no such thing as “East Wilshire.” Like most addresses and phone numbers in TV/movies, it’s made up. Wilshire Boulevard actually starts in downtown LA and runs west until it ends up in Santa Monica. Wilshire has no east/west designations, but if it did, they’d all be west. There’s no 5800 address east of downtown LA. If there were, it’d be so far from the presumably Westside locations in this and most episodes that the title would be “Driving for Days.”

Thank you for sharing this "East Wilshire" information! You made me laugh with the "driving for days" 😊
Thank You! I wasn't interested in Columbo at all just a few days ago. It was Poker Face that I watched recently, that reminded me of a show when I was younger, which after investigating, I find out was Columbo. It actually suggested it on Peacock after the last episode. So I started watching it and really liked it! As usual, I went to Reddit to see comments about the show. In the Reddit comments I saw your link posted and I've been hooked ever since! Every day I watch the next episode and then come here to see your brilliance right after. You align with everything I was thinking at the time, and I enjoy learning all the details you add. For me, you've made it cool to watch old shows, where as my teenagers probably think I'm just an old cooky mom. So thanks for making my days, it's been so fun.

Another goodie, and it really sounds as if youre easing into these deep dives and getting comfortable! I noticed the theatre had a placard for Murder By Death, one of my favorites also starring Peter Falk. To be fair it's quite a hit or miss movie but Falk and Truman Capote are wonderful in it.
