My family has simply adored your commentaries! You are precious and so enjoyable to listen to. I love how your mind works and your sense of humor. I have to share this...we taught our daughter well...she grew up watching Columbo on DVD and he was just her absolute favorite. About 20 years ago when she was 10 we were visiting Southern California and drove by Peter Falk's house. Mrs. Falk was outside on the side porch with all the dogs. My daughter was so brave and hopeful - she got out of the car and walked up to the iron gate at the driveway (the side porch was just behind the gate) and through the gate she asked Mrs. Falk if she could possibly meet Mr. Falk. And she told her that she was his biggest fan. And Mrs. Falk said, "And his youngest!" And she went right in the house and told him. AND HE CAME OUT TO MEET ALL OF US! He came right out on the front porch and he even brought pen and paper in order to give her an autograph. He welcomed us all up there with him and was happy to take photos with us. He was so handsome and so well dressed, even on a casual day at home - lovely purple linen shirt and khaki pants and that beautiful silver hair. He could not have been more kind. Gave my daughter a sweet kiss on the cheek. Made us love him all the more! Looking forward to your next episode!

How amazing and fun! I think you brought your daughter up well and so nice to share this story behind the scenes. It's only in the last few years I've discovered Columbo on the reruns as I was too busy to watch years ago. I've tried to tell my family kids born in the 80s about the Columbo series and they haven't caught on yet. That's what I think makes your story so neat too your daughter was one of his youngest fans, if not the youngest at the time

You asked about the sweaters the women were wearing with the “A” on them. I grew up in the 1960’s - 1970’s. It was a very popular brand name when I was in High School. The name is: Etienne Aigner. I knew them for beautiful leather purses and shoes. They cost around $75 a pair of shoes, if I remember correctly, in the late 1960’s. I looked up sweaters because I had never seen one and they made them similar to the TV show with the “A” symbol like the shoes and purses. Elizabeth Osborn We LOVE your reviews of the shows. Anne Baxter was a powerhouse of an actress! This is episode is one of my favorites. Her outfit at the beginning and even her pants suit she wore seems like something Diana Prince should wear or should have worn in wonder woman (original series)😄. That dress is just amazing to me! Also it has Edith Head in this episode! Columbo had some amazing people starring in it. GREAT WORK in breaking these episodes down in such incredible detail.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed a ton of buildings in L.A. He designed the main buildings for Barnsdall Art Park in East Hollywood, where I was an art model off and on for years. Working in a Wright building was a joy. The lighting was impeccable for artists because Frank designed it that way. I am also an "artist who discovered guitar". That upscale stretch of Sunset Boulevard is like a touch of Beverly Hills and is featured heavily in Get Shorty, a very good movie. The cliche "act like you own the place" works 99% of the time when visiting an upscale joint.

So happy to see you giving us another stellar review in our favorite detective!!!❤ I’ve never thought about Nora wanting to kill both Jean and Jerry Parks at the same time…this episode has always stumped me; did she want Jean dead for being so naive to trust a gossip columnist who has it out for her or to kill the obvious reason for her troubles? But had she killed both in one swoop- perfect…well, perfect for Nora and her reputation…not that I’m waving pom-poms cheering on her criminal actsI!😂 By the way, I always thought the reason why Jean didn’t jump out of the car when it burst into flames was because she got knocked out or fainted due to the slight explosion first… She did seem kinda mousy🤔 Love your channel, love your hard work and love you more!!!!❤🥰❤️BRAVO!!!!🎉 PS If you ever watched the Golden Girls, you would know that word “lanai” 😉

It seems she wanted to get rid of Jean because Jean was the only one who knew Nora killed her husband and since Jean was planning to marry a gossiping journalist and matrimony might get Jean to spill the beans on Nora's accidental murder of her husband, I suppose Nora figured it would be safest to just get rid of Jean. I loved reading your thoughts on the episode and truly appreciate your very kind words! ❤️

Yes, I think it was pretty obvious that once the pillow talk started, Jean would end up telling Jerry everything. I've always wondered, though - did Jerry suspect that Nora had killed her husband? It seems he figured there were some secrets in her past that would make juicy reading (or blackmail fodder) but did his suspicions already tend in this direction or was he just on the lookout for any dirt that might come his way? He didn't behave as if he thought Nora was a killer; he seemed to think her shady past was pretty much confined to financial matters. Though he did make that nasty crack about her husband turning over in his grave...

I like your theory. It explains the shock Anne Baxter displays when she sees Jerry alive.

@@motojauntx Yeah, you're right. I like when Columbo lets the act drop, you get to see the hardened cop just for a moment. Something similar in a later season episode, 'An Exercise In Fatality', when he confronts Robert Conrad who is playing the concerned friend of the wife of the man he murdered.

Nora's acting is chef's kiss perfect. She's acting so hard to try to hide this thing that she's done she's frantic she's panicked, and then when it's all over it all just falls away from her face. She has a drink with Colombo and you realize that the role she's been playing is over. After all this time she doesn't have to act anymore

Amazing to see Edith Head- the woman with the most Oscar nominations and wins. She had such an amazing career. Some day you should check out her final film, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. The film is dedicated to her and it was a crime she wasn't even nominated considering the herculean task she had in not only recreating costumes from the film noir era, but also making sure the costumes in the new footage exactly matched those used in the dozens of films (spanning over a decade) they stitched together to make up the movie. For instance, she had to make a dress for Steve Martin to wear that intercut seamlessly to footage of Barbara Stanwyck in the same dress from scenes of Double Indemnity.

I had not realized before how often the same background characters are utilized over and over again in multiple episodes, as are the props and scenery. That shows good attention to detail. Jessie Royce Landis' stint as oldest actress on Columbo will be short lived. Ruth Gordon in Try and Catch Me was born October 30, 1896, beating Jessie by almost a month and making her the oldest murderer as well. I am not certain if she is the oldest to appear in the entire series, but she is definitely on the leaderboard. It makes sense that Nora would want to see Jerry dead as he was a slimy blackmailer and we know what invariably happens to them.

This is one of my all-time favourite episodes (at least top 5). It has what I think is the best and probably (imo) one of the funniest comeback lines of the whole run when Jean tells Nora how much Parks admires her and Nora full of conceit simply says "who doesn't?" . Again, fabulous video, excellently researched as always. You have set a high bar for yourself and you never disappoint. I look forward to the next. And, in your own words 5 cigars out of 5. Bravo.

This episode was always up there on my top 10 list. I think Anne Baxter was marvelous playing an actress playing an actress. She was perfect. Definitely Hollywood!!! I’m so happy you like the episode as well because that scene at the end with her racing home is everything. She tries her best “Acting” but is caught in the end and realizes it’s over. Again you never cease to amaze me with your knowledge, humor and charm in all your reviews. I’m becoming a big a fan of you as much as Columbo and that’s saying a lot. Lol. These episodes are always a pleasant surprise. Regarding the tire, tire valves are screwed into the nozzle and all you need is an object that that fits in between the sides of the valve pin and you can easily twist them out. I may have used a fork to loosen a teachers tire valves once

Nerdiest channel EVER. I LOVE IT!! :) I grew up in the 70s and my mom was huge Columbo fan so i saw all of these. how in the heck do you know all of these tidbits of amazing trivia? All expertly delivered with humor sprinkled in. I'm fixated. This is brilliant.

Another entertaining review! Columbo dialing just five digits on the phone was actually plausible for that time. Growing up in the 70s and early 80s, we were able to make phone calls using just five digits if calling within the same prefix (also known as the central office code). So for a number XXX-YYY-ZZZZ, we just had to dial Y-ZZZZ. At some point in the 80s, we had to start dialing seven digits to make a connection. Later on, of course, it was also required to dial all nine digits.

Another fantastic effort! I rewatched this episode recently anticipating your next video. As far as the murder goes, since this was filmed at an actual house I can only assume that the effects crew were not allowed to completely blow up the car, as it would have damaged the house extensively, so as a result the explosion is a tad underwhelming. A note about the valve stem. What Columbo is referring to is removing the stem itself, not the cap, to let the air out of the tire.

Love your channel and your commentary. This is NOT a criticism, just an observation. 6:06: the "added car sounds" may in fact be the Spitfire. The fact that you hear the engine rev before the car moves is SOP for a standard shift car, especially if the driver is more concerned with not stalling than with not wearing out the clutch! Since manual transmissions have pretty much gone the way of the dodo, this would be easy to overlook.

Great review, your standards of research and presentation are excellent as always. Rudolph 'Rudy' Valentino was a legend with the kind of star status that is almost impossible to conceive of today. No star/celebrity today matches the status and appeal of stars like Valentino. He was ,arguably, the world's first superstar and possessed huge sex appeal amongst women of his day. Though some critics occasionally questioned his masculinity - something he hated - a lot of men were happy to copy his looks. In fact a man with perfectly slicked-back hair was dubbed a "Vaselino". The great heavyweight champion, Jack Dempsey - the Manassa Mauler - who trained several Hollywood stars in boxing including Valentino said of him "He was the most virile and masculine of men. The women were like flies to a honeypot. He could never shake them off, anywhere he went. What a lovely, lucky guy" . And Dempsey should know, he was an absolute beast in the ring - watch archive footage of some of his fights! His fight with Jess "the Pottawatomie Giant" Willard was a demolition job! Valentino died in 1926 following complications from surgery conducted to ease what appeared to be appendicitis mixed with gastric ulcers ( his condition in which perforated ulcers present as appendicitis became known as 'Valentino's syndrome'). The streets of Manhattan were clogged with over 100,000 attending his funeral. There were all-day riots on August 24, the day of the funeral, as mourners tried to break into the funeral home to get a glimpse of their idol. Hundreds of police officers, including mounted officers, had to brought in to restore order. Pola Negri, the singer and silent film star, who claimed to be Valentino's secret fiancée, collapsed in hysterics over his coffin and it is reported that several women committed suicide when they learned Valentino had died. I don't wish to denigrate or belittle today's stars but I cannot imagine any modern film star coming even close to matching Valentino's appeal. Can you imagine such scenes at the funeral of any modern star/celebrity? Valentino has inspired or is alluded to in many songs but the one that comes to mind is "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" written by Freddie Mercury and performed by Queen. Freddie, a very stylish figure himself, was in part inspired by Valentino's looks and style. The other one is the sequence from the end of Adam Ant's music video "Prince Charming" (if you haven't seen it, you really should it's terrific) in part of which he presents himself as Valentino in his iconic role as the Sheikh.

Another excellent breakdown. I'd like to add the following: (1:33) I believe my childhood Columbo addiction spawned my adult Jaguar addiction. (4:06) True story: while Katie Hepburn was a Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn was not. Her real last name was Ruston. Now the twist: Audrey not-Hepburn's middle name was Katie. So that kinda makes it all okay. (6:11) The Spitfire Mark IV was a manual transmission. Thus, noise before motion. (8:34) Hollywood almost always gets gas fires and explosions wrong. First, there would be no explosion because it's just open flame. The gas tank doesn't just explode because there's a fire nearby. The boiling point of gasoline is 395°F, so the pressure change required to cause an explosion would have taken a...hot minute. (8:40) Flaming stunt car: long shot no license plate, closeup it does. The plate in question is JOY-856. That's an error. California changed their plates from "AAA 000" to "000 AAA" in 1969. All of the season one Columbo plates are correct (Columbo's plate is famously "044 APD"), but this one is wrong--probably because it was illegal to set fire to an active plate. (9:04) "No you may not." is objectively hysterical. (12:36) I'm going with Jeremiah Johnson (1972) with Robert Redford and possibly that bike-loving faux Native American. (19:59) Burned to a crisp, but gotta love the shine on those hubcaps though. (21:56) First of all, great eye. That is Marilyn. That photo is from a set by Bruno Bernard, 1952 in Palm Springs. There is a second pic from the same shoot for sale online. Callback #1: Bernard was once charged with "smut-peddling". In case anyone is wondering, that is known as a "button-tufted cushion" she's leaning on. Also, that photo is unsigned even though Columbo says the opposite. Bernard was famous for his Monroes and his collaboration with Vargas--creating the "pin up". (24:40) I'd like to add "The Big Sleep" as a can't-miss Bogart film noir. (37:12) That painting is Diego Velázquez's "The Toilet of Venus" (1647), also at the National Gallery in London. However, it's be significantly altered to hide the nudity and the cupid. That's right, Callback #2: those two men are literally pedaling smut. ([sic] that joke is a thinker) (37:15) The first "Dalai Lama" was actually the third Dalai Lama, who was anointed during the Ming Dynasty in the mid-1500s. So...the other kind of "llama". (47:01) That's known as a "Schrader valve". Invented 1893. Columbo said they "loosen it". He means you yank out the core with needle-nose pliers then run away so you don't have to stand there like a dolt. It's very similar to the "childproof" cap on medicine. Press down, twist, then pull. No actual damage to the tire and it can be fixed in 60-seconds once you know how it works. (50:43) "Excuse me are you a Shriner?" What an absurd question. Total number of Shriners for the whole planet: 309,000 in 2023. That's 4/1000ths of 1%. Population of LA in 1970: 2,816,061. Estimated Shriners citywide in 1970: 112. (55:19) "Jean knew." Pippa Scott, who played Jean, is still alive and was born in 1935. That would make her character on the show in 1973 38-years-old. So 12 years earlier would be age 26. I'm wondering if she was one of the "casting couch starlets".

WouldBeWizard, figured someone would reply to the tire valve question, but Wow ! B-) Your "Schrader valve" note leads me to think Columbo misspoke when saying: 46:58 "Oh, but the VALVE STEM was nice and tight... " and might have more clearly said "the valve core was threaded nice and tight" ? Per Wiki : "The Schrader valve consists of a valve stem into which a valve core is threaded. The valve core is a poppet valve assisted by a spring. A small rubber seal located on the core keeps the fluid from escaping through the threads. Using the appropriate tools, a faulty valve core can be immediately extracted from the valve stem and replaced with a new one."

Excellent comment - but just a small correction about the manual transmission meaning noise before motion - this is just an audio error. If you press the accelerator on a manual car which is in neutral (or in gear but with the clutch also pressed) the engine will just rev - but this is very clearly the sound of a car actually driving away. Cheers!

My wife and I love watching these reviews together! And I always have a soft spot for watching actors playing actors - they know just how ridiculous and broad they are supposed to be, and go even more ridiculous and broader! Always a good time :)

And shoes. 5 cigars :) While I’m here I should mention best trouser wearer of the murdered goes to Pat Crowley/Mrs. Kennicutt in Death Lends a Hand. If I knew Nora had a body under a fountain I would tell her to do her own errands, after talking about my pay rise :). Sooooo looking forward to next review as it’s the first one I ever watched as a kid. Mr Spock a killer! Thanks again!

Thank you again for another great recap! I love this episode, it's not stellar but it's definitely one I reach for when I just want to get lost in the Columbo universe. I always mistakingly forget that Jean was a target too, I think because my brain doesn't really dig the way Columbo wraps this up. I also never remember why he wants the Shriner ring. I however love Anne Baxter in this and the catty interplay between her and Ferrer make up for any logic faults. Her line read of "George, how tall are you?" ALWAYS makes me roll my eyes and laugh because it was so unnatural. Shatner, eat your heart out lol. But the childlike way that Columbo hangs up the phone right after is just stupid fun lol. But I think she did hope she got them both in the original attempy otherwise her reaction to seeing Parks walk in the restaurant doesn't make sense for the story that she intended to just kill Jean. I felt that reaction was genuine. You can't fake that look. The faint afterwards would strike me as a actress's embellishment if I felt like she was acting. I'm not sure the writers fully committed to that, because her attempt to cover her tracks and go after Parks in that drive by really doesn't make a lot of sense. She supposedly knew what Jean knew and had already eliminated her so she didn't need to care about covering the tracks and make Parks look like he's still a target by the infamous "real killer". I had to laugh at the extra that attended the art show with Kingston and also beat him back to his uncles house to investigate the crime lol. Thank you again and looking forward to the next ones...😊😊

I love these so much! The next best thing to new Columbo episodes. I don't know what a Ming Lama might be, but they made a movie about it; The Ming Lama (1956). Film details. Featuring. Howard Duff Angela Lansbury Francis L. Sullivan. Country. USA. Year. 1956. Genre. Crime. Columbo didn't mention the cap on the tire valve. He says, "the valve stem was tight". Loosening the cap will not let the air out and you are correct about pressing the valve stem, but it would take a long time to empty a car tire. Some caps are a little wrench for the valve stems and loosening that will do the job. Even better, we hoodlums will loosen one of them ever so slightly and the victim gets his flatty somewhere else. One more thing, did you say "starlights on the casting couch"? You did, I'm a witness here. I believe you meant starlets. 😉 Keep 'em coming. You are a very individual person. 🥰

Fantastic analysis. 😀 I love that comment by Jerry Parks about Nora's husband "...spinning in his grave. If he had one." 😮 I never realised that Edith Head was that old. She would have been in her mid 70s in the filming of this episode. As a car 'anorak' I'm impressed with the car knowledge. I know little bit as a Brit as the myriad of American car marques is confusing. Jaguar XKE is known as the 'E Type' in other markets.

Yes! I always thought Nora wanted to kill both Jean and Jerry! Jerry never seemed the type of person that would lend his car to someone... even someone he was (maybe) going to marry. That seemed strange to me the first time I saw this decades ago. And Nora must have realized that there was the possibility Jean already told Jerry the secret under the fountain. She would have wanted them both dead, and Jerry's files burned to ashes. She just wasn't that great at murder... just like most murderers. Great work, as per normal for you, btw. Thanks! Great fun!
