This was one of two episodes that included Academy Award winner Ray Milland. It was remarkable how many such renowned actors appeared in this series. Here's an example of a master actor doing their work. There is a scene in this episode where Milland's character "Arthur Kennicutt" goes to the morgue to identify his wife's body. The expression of overwhelming grief on his face was absolutely genuine. Then, when they leave and go into the waiting area, Columbo gives him a cup of coffee out of the vending machine and they talk for a while. At the conclusion of this scene as Columbo walks away, pay close attention to Milland -- his body language and facial expressions. He's going to take a drink of coffee but you can see the grief just wash over him as he puts his coffee down. It's a remarkable performance.

My one problem with this episode has always been that it is a stupid Blackmailer who would deceive a client in order to blackmail a client’s wife. Because if the client’s wife says she won’t go along with it, is the blackmailer really going to call the client and say, “Guess what, I lied to you. Your wife is cheating.” He would soon start to lose clients if word got out about these shady practices.

I always wondered how Culp would have phoned Milland the next day and said he HAD made an error after all. It would make him look silly, and what about all the evidence he had shown him in the file? He would have had to admit to hashing the whole thing up, and it wouldn't stand up for someone so smooth and confident. What if the wife had told her hubby and not confronted Brimmer?

It would probably make more sense to approach her about blackmailing before he released the file to the husband. If she plays ball, she gets a clean bill of health. If she doesn’t wanna do it, well, then she’s headed to divorce court.

I too "LOVE" the glasses montage! Very weird & surreal. But i "THINK" the reason it sometimes gets cut is because (while it's SUPER well done) - it's not completely "necessary" for us to understand what's going on. Heaven forbid - to save time (for commercials) if some station producer must commit the blasphemy of cutting out part of Columbo - that glasses montage would be the one to cut. But yea- i think it's a good segment too.

@@WatchitforDays It is kind of odd, this early in the series, to hear Columbo casually allude to his home address. As the writers tightened things up, it became clear that Columbo does not want any suspect knowing anything about him - including his first name. Fascinatingly, the only other guy who knew where Columbo lived was was another professional investigator: Brenner/Steinmetz from IDENTITY CRISIS. Everyone else gets some shuck-and-jive.

What brilliant observations and excellent amusing commentary! Must take hours to meticulously go through each episode and research every actor, extras, scenes and music score . Love these early 70's episodes (especially the Robert Culp ones), which I've watched many times over the years. Culp's door kick scene in this episode was particularly impressive which I've never noticed before. The 90's Columbo episodes are dire in comparison and don't interest me whatsoever! Keep up the good work with your wonderful unique channel!🎬 🥇

You're doing a wonderful job with these videos. I was a young boy when I first saw Columbo, and I watched the episodes religiously. I'm kind of proud of myself that I recognized Peter Falk's acting talent at such a young age. He was from then on one of my favorite actors, and he appeared in many of my favorite movies: The Great Race, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Pocketful of Miracles, Robin and the 7 Hoods, Luv, The Cheap Detective, The In-Laws, Murder by Death, and The Princess Bride (one of his best performances). Anyway, I'm enjoying these reviews very much. I just finished watching your video on Short Fuse. I'll be looking forward to the next one.

Not to mention the fact that when Brimmer enters his house he does not notice the smell of the cigarette that Lenore has left ON in the ashtray. Anyway, dear Shonna, don't you think the director of this episode wanted to sell us Brimmer's beautiful paintings? They are filmed very well and for a very long time. And always in the center of the frame! As for Columbo's presentation, I prefer the one of the "previous" episode, _Murder by book,_ less emphatic. P.S. When Brimmer enters in Mr. Kennicutt's car at the cemetery, his microphone cable can be seen coming out of his pants.

Wow, a fantastically detailed review. I love Columbo, bought the DVD box set when it was first available, and have watched this episode maybe 8-10 times; but there were details you highlighted that I wouldn't spot in a million years. This episode is also one of my favorites. Among my faves are those where Columbo works through a very convoluted set of clues; tricks the killer into either confessing or incriminating themselves; or there is abrasiveness and a lot cat-and-mouse interplay between Columbo and the villain. Most of the episodes are very well written and there were obviously some very good plot ideas submitted; and the script editors did a great job in maintaining a high level of continuity between episodes (although the 1990s Columbo character seemed to take on a somewhat more wayward personality than the 1970s version).

One thing that never was clear to me… did Columbo plant the contact lens in the trunk of the car? Or was it there by coincidence as he claims? I suspect he planted it, because the other option was a one-in-a-million chance. And with the case being “solved” by finding the lens in Brimmer’s hand, that’s too good for coincidence. The only trouble is that Columbo gives no indication that he might have planted it, other than letting us know he had placed the potato up the tailpipe. Also, it appears that Brimmer climbed into the trunk of the car because it was parked over that trench at the maintenance shop. It might have been hard to access all parts of the trunk standing at the edge of that trench. But the first time I watched it, I also wondered why he was climbing into the trunk.

I especially thought the montage in the glasses was a nice touch. This was the first murder so far that wasn’t premeditated. It would have seemed unrealistic if the killer hadn’t been in shock for a while, struggling to figure out what to do next… although, it wouldn’t have been very interesting for the audience to just watch the man stand and stare and maybe talk to himself. The montage allowed them to show, not tell, what the character was thinking (and ended up doing), while also demonstrating that he _did_ need time to take in the situation and think hard.

Thank you very much, my friend in Iran... I am so happy to hear you are enjoying the videos. Robert Culp is also one of my favorites... as well as Patrick McGoohan :) I'm over half way done with the next episode, "Etude in Black." I hope to finish it within 2 weeks. Take care, Aria.

@@WatchitforDays Wow! Thank you for reading my comment so fast and replying so kindly. It means a lot, my dear friend. Oh, speaking of Robert Culp, absolutely. He's so intense in this one, and the murder scene, like you analyzed, is one of a kind in the entire Columbo catalog. I'm also glad that you too like Patrick's episodes! Can't wait for the Cassavetes episode, "Etude"! It happens to be the very first Columbo I watched and one of my all time favorites. Thank you so much, Shonna. You take care too. And godspeed! Oh, just one more thing... :O ...who would be the actor that you wished had played a killer on Columbo but never did? Mine would be Steve McQueen! You mentioned Bullitt here, and I always find it odd that nearly all of Steve's friends and co-stars have been on Colbumo (such as Robert Vaughn, Don Gordon, Faye Dunaway Donald Pleasance, ...) but not himself. Imagine if Columbo tackled "Thomas Crown"!

@@AriaMohtadiHaghighi Really?? Etude was my first Columbo episode, too! :) Well, two actors that show up in the same episode, "Lovely but Lethal" should have absolutely been killers and that is Vincent Price and Martin Sheen! I agree about Steve McQueen, too. That would have been amazing!

@@WatchitforDays :O Seriously?! That's really cool! Before ever having watched "Etude", my dad always told its main plot to me as a bedtime story, when I was a kid, believe it or not! :D That "there was this eccentric detective who would realize the conductor had killed someone based on the flower that he didn't wear." - So when I finally watched it years later I instantly became a fan. Columbo (and Peter Falk) happened to be very popular in Iran before the revolution, and he still is, especially since his Persian voice actor (Manouchehr Esmaeili) used a specifically accent to dub Peter Falk which matched his original quite well. :) Oh, definitely! I agree that Martin Sheen was underused in that one. At the very least I wanted a second episode with him and Vera Miles. And of course Vincent Price should have been a killer.

As a kid in the 70s-80s, I remember "Skin" diving being a common term to differentiate between wet "suit" diving, which was becoming popular in pop culture at the time. In hindsight it's very easy and understandable to recognize the state of "common knowledge" in the early 70s. This was only 20 years after WW2, so much of life, technology, pop culture, etc, were brand new concepts to the people of the world, who were mostly "living in the dark ages" compared to now, or even 20 years later in the 90s. I LOVE these videos, this is the first time ever someone has pointed out some small details about Columbo that even I didn't notice....

Strange as it may seem, I didn't have any sympathy for the woman who was killed. She was extremely arrogant and literally threatened her would-be murderer. Kind of ironic that she was able to walk right inside his house given that he makes a living being secretive and well-guarded. The writers did a brilliant job making us not really care about this woman.

At 11:48, I love how you notice the odd clip of the Continental driven by Lady Lawyer Leslie, inserted in a scene of Bremer's Eldorado. A similar goof is in Ransom for a Dead Man when Leslie is mailing the ransom note, and a Corvette drives by. As it is shown driving away down the street, it is clearly not the Corvette but a clip of the Continental... the very car she is standing beside. This exact 71 Lincoln Continental makes yet another appearance in Suitable for Framing, as Kim Hunter's car.

27:43 I've viewed the series many times, and unfortunately, Shonna is so right - there are quite a few scenes of Columbo eating and talking with his mouth full. I adore Columbo and I adore Peter Falk, but unfortunately, people talking while chewing, swallowing, slurping, forking more food into their mouths? AGH! I have to leave the room. I love this recap! This episode is in my personal top 10. I love the effect of scenes played over Robert Culp's lenses, and I love Ray Milland's speech about his marriage. And of course I love the ending. Thank you Shonna!
