The Greatest General in History? Alexander invades the Persian Empire

The incredible story of Alexander the Great and his conquest of the known world is brought to life with animated maps, images from Osprey Publishing and Total War game footage. In Part 1, we look at the background: Persia's invasion of Greece in 480 BC, the rise of Macedonia under King Philip II, and the formation of the Hellenic League. Following Philip's assassination, his 20 year old son Alexander inherited the kingdom and a formidable army. In 334 BC he used this army to launch a invasion of the Persian Empire, winning a crucial victory at the River Granicus.

Bullet-Tooth Tony: Alexander is head and shoulders the best commander in history here is why: Hannibal, yet absolutely brilliant , eventually failed his objective to crush Rome, and got eventually decisively defeated . Caesar, also one of the greatest, but most of his victories was on an arguably inferior fighting force, the Gauls. the moment he faced first time a matching fighting force and cunning commander in Pompeii he had his ass handled severely, granted he eventually got the better of him. and Napoleon in all his brilliance, people sometimes forget how his megalomania prevented him from even more glory, he lost the best fighting machine and well equipped army of 600.000 strong in Russia ENTIRELY! also eventually a crushing defeat. Alexander never suffered defeats, but what makes him so exceptional is he often faced unlike the others a totally unknown enemy, forcing him to literally reinvent new tactics and yet he always prevailed, he was master in open battle, siege warfare, he even had counter insurgency campaigns(!) and faced elephants. Its more of a miracle this man was never defeated in the field

"and Napoleon in all his brilliance, people sometimes forget how his megalomania prevented him from even more glory, he lost the best fighting machine and well equipped army of 600.000 strong in Russia ENTIRELY! also eventually a crushing defeat." Due to the winter, burning down the ressources and a big fire in Muscovy and not due to Russian soldiers beating him. He revolutionized war-fare. I can´t see how he is less of a great general than Alexander. Not to mention that Napleon had an ideological impact that changed the continent forever. "Alexander never suffered defeats, but what makes him so exceptional is he often faced unlike the others a totally unknown enemy" That´s nonsense and even mentioned in the video. They were rivals, not unkown enemies. The hellenic league was not formed against an unkown enemy, but a known one. "forcing him to literally reinvent new tactics " He used the same phallanx-strategy every other greek city-state used. The phlanx were superior to every other known unit at that time. Expect for maybe horse-archerers.

Historical facts = Strabo (63 BC) tells us that Illyrians, Thracians, Bottians and Thesprotes shared the Macedonian territory (Tribes of Pelasgian origin 🇦🇱 ). Source: (Strabo, VII, Frg .n°.11) The Macedonians have just propagated the Hellenic culture and have adopted it little by little ... The ancient authors called the Macedonians Barbaros/non-Greeks... For example the great Thucydides... Example : Thucydides (II, 80- IV, 126) who qualified of Barbaros (not Greek) the MACEDONIANS, Thesprotes, Molosses, Châones Atintanes, Paravaiens, Orestiens etc! Historical facts = Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great. But who was this woman who is said to have astonished the Macedonian king with her beauty ? I will write based only on facts, that is, on the quotes of famous ancient authors, mainly Greek. ( For me there is one thing in history, which with the facts are not said ... ) According to Plutarch, Alexander was a descendant of Ajax through his father Neoptolemos and this is accepted without discussion. According to Justin, Philip married Olympias, daughter of Neoptolemos, king of the Molosses. All the authors thus agree on the fact that Alexander the Great was the grandson of a Molossian. For those who do not know this tribe (the Molossians), who were they, what territory did they occupy and how were they considered by the ancient authors ? Let us stop for a moment to know more about the tribe of the Molossians from which the mother of Alexander the Great came. To make it simple, the tribe of Molossians is in Epirus somewhere in the region of Chamerie on the back of Thesprotians who dominated the coastal part. In addition to this, the Kaons who were in the south of present-day Albania and who constituted three of the great tribes of Epirus. Historically, tribes like the Molossians or others who composed Epirus like the Kaons, the Thesprotians, the Paraue, the Antintans and others, are historically linked to the Illyrian (🇦🇱) culture or to a part of it. As Thucydides tells us about the events of the Peloponnesian War that involved both actually in reality Illyrians and Illyria itself, these tribes were commonly considered barbarian (non-Greek) tribes. Thucydides: - "Among the barbarians there were about 1,000 Kaons who ruled without a king. Along with the Kaons, the Thesprotians also participated and were also ruled without a king. There were also the MOLOSSIANS, the Atintants and the Paraues. ( HISTORY OF THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR ) All these tribes, mentioned by the historian of Athenian origin Thucydides for their participation in the famous Peloponnesian war in the 5th century B.C., are considered as barbarians, therefore not Greek! ( Thucydides II, 80- IV, 126 ) The Kaons, the Thesprotians of Chamerie, the Arintans and the Parauets constitute the backbone of what one called Epirus. Among them are of course the Molossians where are the roots of the family of the mother of Alexander the Great ! And Thucydides is not the only source which defines the Epirotes as non-Greeks. There are many others! According to the encyclopedia Basic Antiquity, composed of 86 volumes... Pauly Wissowa the Real "Encyclopedia Alterumswissenschaft" says that the Epirotes are of Illyrian origin 🇦🇱 and have strong links with the population of southern Italy! More concise on the issue, the only Nobel Prize in history 🎓 is none other than Theodor Mommsen author of the cycle "Corpus of Antiquity inscriptions" which says that: - "the brave Epirotes, the Albanians 🇦🇱 of antiquity supported with traditional loyalty the young and brave Pyrrhus or "the Eagle" as they called him " . Let us point out on this subject that the Albanians name themselves "Shqiptar", that is to say "sons or children of the eagle". The soldiers of Pyrrhus (3rd century BC / Epirote King), called their King "the Eagle" and that the latter retroqued them one day that they were his "children", so the Albanians are the children of the Eagle ... "Shqiptar = child of the Eagle .... " . (Pyrrhus was the cousin of Alexander the Great, of the Molossian tribe and himself an ambitious conqueror, Pyrrhus is one of the most formidable adversaries of the early days of ancient Rome). Lorenzo Braccesi (Professor of Greek History at the University of Venice, Italy, in 1986) tells us: - "Olympias was originally from Epirus, on the part of the father who was king of Epirus, on the part of the mother also and that Illyrian blood 🇦🇱 circulated in the family, there is no doubt. " ( 9,01- 9,15 . The true story of Alexander the great ... - Gjurmë Shqiptare ) That the Epirotes are or are not Illyrians is a discussion that, from an archaeological point of view, is resolved. The Epirotes and the Illyrians have the same culture, if we consider the Iron Age, the use of tombs, fortifications with several rows of walls, their material culture, the shape of the pots or the ornaments which are identical to those of Korça (current Albania) and religion. Not only ancient authors like Thucydides, Strabo and others have called the Epirotic tribes barbarians (non-Greek) but also later serious publications based on documents and archaeological findings point out the same thing. The Molosses, were one of the Illyrian tribes of Epirus from where came the mother of Alexander the Great Olympias daughter of the king and the sister . The Molosses, were one of the Illyrian tribes of Epirus from where came the mother of Alexander the Great Olympias daughter of the king and sister of another well known Illyrian prince "Alexander the Molossus". I believe that all or part of the strong character of Alexander comes exactly from his mother, from the house that also gave birth to Pyrrhus. The powerful role of women in Illyrian society has been documented by many authors, including those who today identify themselves as Greeks, such as Athenaeus and Theompope. Olympias' influence on her son Alexander was so great. She believed that her son had divine blood and that he was born to rule the greatest kingdom of all time. But the mother's family was not the only Illyrian family to which Alexander was affiliated, his link with the Illyrians was stronger than that!

Historical facts = The family of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. This last, according to the data, had a Macedonian father, but not his mother. She was called Eurydice and came from the tribe of "Lyncestides". Who was the grandmother on the side of the father of Alexander the Great? The mother of Philip is the daughter of the daughter Of Arrhabaeus, daughter of king Sirras, says Strabo. Plutarch is very detailed on this subject. He insists that although Eurydice is Illyrian (🇦🇱) and barbarian in every sense of the word, she was educated to help children. He says very clearly that she is Illyrian, and barbaric in every way. (Plutarch, De liberis educandis. p.69) Lyncestides from where came the mother of Philip II, were a tribe which extended not far from the lake of Ohrid, somewhere in the area of Manastir where the ruins of one of their most important cities are today. (Illyrian, no doubt. It is the last province that has a border with Macedonia) As for whether it was an Illyrian tribe, this is clearly proven by ancient historians and geographers, including Titus Livy, Strabo, as well as Pliny who lists many in detail in the fourth book of the collection of 37 works entitled "Natural History", not to mention the great ancient geographer "Claudius Ptolemy" who also classifies the Lyncestrae among the Illyrian tribes . And the later authors have the same attitude since on several occasions, they mention Eurydice, the mother of Philip II and the grandmother of Alexander, as being illyrian etc... Here what Demosthenes says to us about Philip II of Macedonia (father of Alexander the Great): - "And yet, with regard to Philip and his conduct, they don't feel that way, although he's not Greek and he's not related to the Greeks at all..." (The third Filipino) By Demosthenes (384-322 BC)

His father's war chest was far from full (around 70 talents when Alexander took the throne). In actual fact, Alexander had to take on Philip's prior debts and borrow an extra 800 talents for his invasion of Persia. This would last Alexander a mere few months unless he quickly found booty to pay off his troops; partially the reason why he disbanded his fleet since it cost him an arm and a leg!

BerylusRed Okay, I’m going to stop you right there. First and foremost I don’t appreciate you implying I am on a certain path to hell for my enthusiasm over an historical figure. Understand that though Alexander wouldn’t by any rational mind be considered a paragon of humanity by todays standards, I do not judge him on our modern, more progressed, sensibilities. Being objective and analyzing a person from a different time, it is apparent that Alexander was a memorable and great figure of his time. A more primitive time where glory in military prowess and influence in power, were the marks of a great person, honored and admired. Such is the case in such biblical figures, most prominently king David, who was renowned in battle and conquest. Alexander for his time was quite a progressive individual, allowing other beliefs and cultures to prosper in his empire. Interesting figure of the ancient world. As an agnostic I insist no human knows truly the nature of a God, or any like concept. If God was intervening in human affairs in the ancient word, it certainly isn’t in our age. There has been no prophet performing miracles in millennia. According to Judeo-Christian scripture we live in an age where the divine powers are just awaiting to intervene at an apocalyptic time. There is a folly in Catholic, originally pagan, and Protestant dogma, about the nature of humanity in relation to God. You see clearly the ancients believed humanity is a mirror image of the divine, or God, and we are by that divine relationship gods our selves. We are gifted with the free will to create and destroy, as God wills. Adam and Eve failed to live up to that potential, it was not until Jesus that humanity finally was acquitted of departing from divine nature and capable of returning to it’s role in the divine. This is the understanding that prophets and Jesus preached in the ancient world, and my understanding of the concept of God. God is the universal consciousness, reality is it’s mind, thoughts shape reality. All that exists is God, God is all, God is us.

Thank you so much for taking the time to create a channel devoted to making history approachable to the masses! Being a history buff myself im always looking for new mediums to engage all the high schools I've subbed at. Videos like this are genius, and have allowed me to spread my love of history with dozens of students. Lots of them now collaborate amongst their growing "history club" friends.

Christian Johnston FYI...the Macedonian led Persian Revenge invasion was more about acquiring Persian talents/resources than it was revenge. King Philip was in debt and his economy ran on war and plunder. Persia was fractured at this time n point and King Philip had built/trained the perfect army to lay waste to Persian army/mercenaries and plunder treasuries upon treasuries.

I was trying to figure out the song that you used at 6:03 and then the song at 8:20. So searching through Filmstro I found the one at 8:20. I then moved my attention to the 6:03 one. I was spinning my wheels when I finally realized the "Momentum", "Depth", and "Power" sliders on the right. Finally, I realized it was the same song (Parbat for anyone wondering) that you had adjusted to add more power and momentum to it. With that being said, I love how you purposefully had the music transition in a way as to be a dynamic element of your video to make it as if we were marching to battle. Well done!

Even though I am a PERSIAN, I still fully respect this brilliant-genius military tactician, commander, and warrior. I respect him because bringing down our empire (Persian Empire) was NOT an easy task. He is truly "The Great", but will always remain accursed for us Persians lol. Persians will always respect tough, great, and notable adversaries; and I like this man because by the end he actually fell in love with our Persian Civilization, and the greatness we achieved. Alexander fell in love so much so that he told his commanders to marry Persian Women, and even moved his capital to our land. Anyways we did reconquer our lands back from the Greeks (Hellenic empire of Seleucid) shortly after Alexanders death and established the second Persian Empire. But then again we had another tough, respectable adversary to fight, the Romans. Sadly it was our fight with Eastern Roman Empire (Especially Byzantine-Sasanian War of 602-628) that gave us the rise of Arabs in that region and that they went on conquering both Persia, Byzantine and eventually a good percentage of Europe; and started enforcing their beliefs on other peoples. I just kinda wish that Alexander never burnt Persepolis. Respect and Greetings to our European friends and brothers from Persia (Iran) and a Persian, we love you guys. OFF TOPIC, another Hellenic man I truly respect, is Phyrrus of Epirus; you guys should watch the video on him by Sargon of Akkad, truly a Great Channel. Plz do Julius Caesar next.

Alexander the Great perfected combined arms tactic by implementing new elements to his father's army. In addition to the heavy infantry phalanx and hypaspists; the heavy Companion and Thessalian Cavalry; the light Prodromoi, Paeonian, Thracian and Greek Mercenary Cavalry, he increased the size of the army by implementing Agrianian, Triballian, Illyrian and Thracian peltasts; and Cretan, Paeonian, Illyrian Triballian and Thracian archers, in support of the cavalry and heavy infantry. Later he adopted horse-archers and elephants in his combine arms approach. He understood how they worked in concert with each other and nullified weaknesses and denied the enemy free maneuver. The relative static heavy infantry was protected by ranged units against ranged cavalry and light soldiers, and in turn, the heavy infantry shielded the weaker missile units. His cavalry gave him local superiority with their rapid movement and elite Agrianian peltasts and elite hyaspists aided the cavalry in melee against enemy cavalry and broke the enemy's morale by exploiting a "schwerpunkt" every time. The phalanx steamrolled the enemy infantry with a steady pace and kept the pressure up by moving forward while the cavalry killed them in the rout. Pure art and science!

Alexander wasn't so accursed according to the Persians (after the fact, of course.) According to Ferdowsi's Book of Kings, the epic of the old pre-Islamic Persian Empire, Alexander was secretly a half-Persian and the secret heir to Persia's throne! Of course it's a good way to save face for a historic defeat, but it'd be fun to note how Alexander was remembered by the people he affected the most--he did little to Greece itself, but changed the face of the Middle East and Central Asia forever.

I personally cannot discredit, one of the greatest war commander in history. Because of his atrocities, in ancient times especially in B.C. war was for the most part, was a way of life for people depending on which land, country & culture your from. Ancient Greece was a divided country, during the mediterranean age. Every state in Greece, except Athens. Use their army to keep, what they thought was liberation. No different than what Macedonians believe. King Phillip of Macedonia understood this, so that why his plans to make Greece greater relied on unity. Phillip of Macedon had accomplish his deeds, and made most of Greece except Sparta United. Phillips would eventually be assassinated, and his son Alexander the third better know as (Alexander the Great) will claim the throne. Alexander will eventually rule for thirteen years in the process, he went on to spread western culture over the Mediterranean world. Rule as a conquer, destroying the powerful achaemenid empire. And becoming for the most part king over the world. I see no difference between King Phillip and Alexander, both untied people. But Phillip united Greece, Alexander the Great united the world.

And btw the northern Greeks have a lot of Slavic dna too because after the death of Attila Slavic tribes raided/raped and settled in Greece. This can be seen in the haplogroups of todays Greeks too (R1a).

+Alexios Sauromates True, but DNA is not the only source of nationality. Slavs simply have no relation with ancient Macedonia, and the ancient Balkans in general

Slavic peoples in balkans are slavic in culture but in DNA there are mix of Illyrians, Thracians, Proto Bulgars, Greeks, ..... and modern Greeks are Greeks in culture but in DNA are actually the same with peoples of Balkans.

They are NOT the same, how can you even say that, Balkan people are all unique in culture and genome; Serbians are not Croatians and Bulgarians are not Albanians. You insult everyone equally and logic most of all. There have been rapes in history, certainly, but every civilization that existed for more than a handful of generations has had VERY strict rules and rituals controlling childbirth and genetic pools. That's like anthropology 101. Don't fall for the propaganda of the corporate shills, immigration itself wasn't a thing historically. Now somehow diversity is our strength..

I'm nitpicking over here. The hoplites didn't get their name from their shield(I'm guessing vice versa), the shield was called an aspis. The term hoplite more likely comes from the greek word τά ὅπλα (ta hopla) meaning "arms" or "gear", making the hoplite "the equipped man" or "man in gear", i.e. heavy infantry. And it makes sense, a hoplites most distinguishing features are his armaments: spear, large aspis-shield, helmet, greaves, cuirass of some sort and often a sword etc. That's a lot of stuff for just one man.

Dear Chef Excellence, Kostas and Game james: Don't be misguided from the modern usage of the word ''όπλον'' which is weapon- in ancient Greek language ''όπλον'' was the large circular shield, so the video is correct regarding this point.

Ioannis G I have no idea what the word means in modern Greek. In ancient Greek- as I explained in the original post- it refers to armaments or equipment. The shield was called an aspis. Now this is where I start guessing: I'd guess somewhere later in antiquity people started calling the aspis as a hoplon, because it was the preferred shield of a hoplite, a way of combat long since obsolete and hasn't been relevant in a long time.

I know jack shit about Greek language but in RTW and the wikipedia article the shield is called "hoplos" and its explained that the hoplite derives its name from it. I mean, its only logical to assume that since the large, round shield was probably the most defining feature of the hoplite and it enabled the phalanx, like the spear.

Ασπίς/δαι were called all the equipment that warriors holded to protect themselves like pelti (Thracian/Cretan), sakos (Homer age), 8-shaped, thyreos, etc. One kind of them was adopted by the Argolic kind, during the age of the development of Hoplite phalanx and specifically called 'Οπλον. Greek friends can check this website (unfortunately is available only in Greek language).... ellas2.wordpress.com/2011/04/28/%CE%BF%CE%B9-%CE%B1%CF%83%CF%80%CE%B9%CE%B4%CE%B5%CF%83-%CF%83%CF%84%CE%BF%CE%BD-%CE%B1%CF%81%CF%87%CE%B1%CE%B9%CE%BF-%CE%B5%CE%BB%CE%BB%CE%B7%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%BF-%CE%BA%CE%BF%CF%83%CE%BC%CE%BF/
