The Greatest General in History? Alexander and the Battle of Issus

Alexander the Great's astonishing military campaign against the Persian Empire is brought to life with animated maps, images from Osprey Publishing and Total War game footage. In Part 2, Alexander cuts the Gordian Knot, then defeats the army of Darius III at the Battle of Issus. He goes on to conquer the island-city of Tyre in a brutal siege, and seizes control of the rich and ancient land of Egypt, where he is recognised as the new pharaoh. He founds a new city at Alexandria, and at the oracle of Siwah, he is welcomed as son of Amun - king of the gods. King Agis of Sparta leads a rebellion against Macedonian rule back in Greece, but is crushed by Antipater, leaving Alexander free to continue his advance into the heartlands of Persia...

Alexander knew that his army was elite bc of the Macedonian leadership and thier well disciplined and expirenced Macedonian troops. Parmenion held the allegionce of the expirenced Macedonian veterans and the core of Alexander's army. Alexander cud have lost the allegiance of the entire Macedonian force if he simply abandoned Parmenion's wing in order to pursue and slay Darius.

"Alexander son of Philip and the Greeks except the Spartans." Was the inscription on the 300 Persian shields he sent to Athens to honor their contribution. A poem by C. Cavafy: We can very well imagine that they were utterly indifferent in Sparta to this inscription. "Except the Lacedaemonians", but naturally. The Spartans were not to be led and ordered about as precious servants. Besides a panhellenic campaign without a Spartan king as a leader would not have appeared very important. O, of course "except the Lacedaemonians." This too is a stand. Understandable. Thus, except the Lacedaemonians at Granicus; and then at Issus; and in the final battle, where the formidable army was swept away that the Persians had massed at Arbela: which had set out from Arbela for victory, and was swept away. And out of the remarkable panhellenic campaign, victorious, brilliant, celebrated, glorious as no other had ever been glorified, the incomparable : we emerged; a great new Greek world. We; the Alexandrians , the Antiocheans, the Seleucians, and the numerous rest of the Greeks of Egypt and Syria, and of Media, and Persia, and the many others. With our extensive territories, with the varied action of thoughtful adaptations. And the Common Greek Language we carried to the heart of Bactria, to the Indians. As if we were to talk of Lacedaemonians now!

" I'm sorry you can't see reality or realize that the Turks are but a hair on alexanders ass in comparison." But clearly I am the biased one! :D Jokes aside: Expect for logistics I can´t see much strategy concerning the battlefield. We were shown 2 major battles and in both it was just a simple tactic, every total war fan could come up with. Maybe his siege abilities were OP, but we never saw any details regarding this. I have to say that he has gigantic balls for organizing an army and marching against Persia thou.

IgluTV Did you watch this videos analysis? Your insane, oversimplified, elementary idea that all he did was charge in order to win battles is absurd. Envelopment tactics, utilizing geography, and revolutionary siege tactics cannot be boiled down to "just charging". If you have a dissenting opinion of Alexander in the future at least present on argument based on rational thinking.

Alexander was a master of combined-arms tactics and maneuver warfare. He would always attack the enemies center of gravity, Darius, with an elite brigade called the hypaspists and a battalion of elite peltasts, and this is known to modern military theorists as a recon pull or schwerpunkt. This combined with a combined arms approach gave him the victory at Gaugamela. He also combined all the different classes of soldiers into an unbeatable formation so that he could detach them if need be. He would combine phalangites, peltasts/slingers, archers and heavy spearmen with shields, as one battalion to protect each other. Archers against cavalry and lightly armoured infantry. Peltasts/slingers to move around freely to keep skirmishers away and flank enemies on a small scale if they attacked the phalanx. Spearmen to form a shield wall against archers at the front and protect the flanks of the phalangites. Phalangites to form a battle line and protect the rest against cavalry and steamroll heavy infantry with their long sarissa. When he planed for his invasion for Arabia he would field: 256 phalangites, 96 peltasts/slingers, 96 archers and 48 heavy spearmen + officers in each battalion.
