The Glamorous Life of a Pro Gamer

At age 20, professional gamer Michael Schmale had it all: a steady salary, a team mansion overlooking Hollywood and a chef, personal trainer, coach and team manager who were all there to help him play at his best. But the job came with plenty of uncertainties too. This is the first episode of "Next Jobs", a new series about careers of the future hosted by Bloomberg Technology's Aki Ito.

I saw a video recently of Simple being clocked at 171 milliseconds. For a while I though if only this scene was around back when I was playing I could have made more money and I could have been competative... wrong. I would have made 0$ and failed completely because the guys that are playing today are genetic mutants to have reaction times that fast.

+3many15 the audience is one of the smaller esports scenes out there. The Overwatch league on average has 100k+ concurrent viewers with spots on tv channels. CS:GO has been aired on TBS many times and majors had 400k-500k viewers. Fortnite summer skirmish constantly rakes in 500k-600k viewers spread out on player streams. The lcs constantly has 100k-200k viewers spread over different streams, with the chinese scene consistently having millions of viewers (if you take out the bots aswell, chinese websites say the numbers are in tens of millions but the numbers are just in the millions) and being aired on TV aswell. International league tournaments peaked at 20 million plus. Dota 2 majors constantly get millions of viewers aswell from all around the world. Call of duty is very iconic as an esport, but modern day cod esports is a shell of what it was in 2012-2014

Thank you, ive gotten in so many arguments with ppl about how it doesn't matter that jobs are being taken because the amount that are being taken is insurmountable compared to the amount being created. The only issue is that older individuals who have been in those industries that are being replaced by technology, dont have either the time, or the intelligence to adapt to our ever changing world.

I don't understand how we're supposed to feel bad for him about getting dropped. $4k a month isn't a lot in CA, but it is more than enough if all your expenses are paid for. Especially if you have a 50k bonus. Do the math, thats $98,000 gross. After taxes and CA state tax, thats about $69,000 a year. Plus whatever he made from streaming. Dude could have easily saved most of his money and threw it at some investments? There's legit no reason for him to not still comfortably be making 6-7 figures a year. Swear these social media flexers are something.

Alessio Altieri thats like nothing considered the risk of not making top 20. You can't even live a lavish lifestyle on that. Shroud might be able to send his kids to good private schools and maybe have two expensive cars. It's not worth it until I can buy multiple beach houses, ensure 3 generations of private schools for the kids and still have enough to blow it off when I make top 20. Atleast with regular jobs of even 100k a year would guarantee that I would live a life not broke and unqualified even if I don't fall on the top.

KNO yeah I was a bit ignorant with what I said, most top players can make upwards of ~200k annually, shox said in an interview that that was his salary like 2 or 3 years ago. Now with newer imvestors it's likely that we'll see more lower tier players making a lot more money and once players are done playing they can work elsewhere in the industry (management in org, coach, analyst etc.) Or could brand themselves on youtube or twitch (like shroud and nothing are doing) Obviously theres a chance none of this works out and most people should consider getting enough education done in order to work after you finish your esports run

David Crook I've been playing Street Fighter longer than you've been alive. Daigo is an absolute legend in the FGC no doubt. But I meant peasant in terms of overall crossover appeal, prize money he's won, and the stages he's competed on. There's no bigger tournament than Evo and Evo gets beat in terms attendance and viewership on a regular basis. Only until recently has Daigo played in front of 20 or 30k fans and I know he hasn't won anything with over a million people watching at home. Daigo is great and I have much respect for him but his fame and legend are localized

Current e-sport is a marketing tool for Publishers to promote their games as the people that fall for this are young and naive as they live in a nice house and go around in a Rolls-Royce but they do not own anything beside a $4,000 salary with a contract that can terminate them at any time. Don't be fooled by the nice house and the nice car that you don't own heck you have to share everything with other people. it is just fooling you that you are successful when you are not. it is as clear as day all you have to do is open your eyes. Also you have a better job security as being a garbage man than being a e-sport player, don't believe me look it up.

Exactly. This is forced esports as I like to call it. Like Overwatch. Don't get me wrong, Overwatch is a way more competitive game than CoD and Blizzards approach to pushing it as an esport was very interesting, but theres a reason why the games esport scene is crashing. You can't fake it, if there isn't a natural esport appeal to the game, the fanbase wont stick. Compared to League, dota or csgo (or a lot more others) where the esport scene came naturally. You can definetly make a very good living off esports tho, but only a small percentage of actual esports players are gonna be able to live off their earnings in their 50s... A lot of them, who have no plan B are gonna end up working at McDonalds.

So it's not as physically demanding as traditional sports, well most things these days arent as physically demanding as they used to be. Interesting to see this industry continue to rise and start to enter the realm and budget of the major leagues. There are already superstar gamers that even non gamers are aware of. My mom, whose closest experience to gaming is farmville knows who Ninja is, that he makes millions playing "fortress night or something". It's still kinda early days for the industry, but I imagine it won't be too long before gaming championships will rival the superbowl for eyeballs, maybe even surpass it and bring in major half time performances by celebrities and million dollar commercials. watching someone play COD or fortnite is certainly more interesting than watching someone golf.

Ghost used to live in the clout house before it was the clout house. That why in one of ricegum video you can see a Ghost gaming logo in the back.

Boi, you insane? 16 hours of practise a day leaves only 8 to fit in: Sleep, workout, food, toilet breaks, showering, social time. A healthy sleep is ~7-9 hours iirc so where tf is anyone supposed to get 16 hours of practise from. Afaik, most csgo pros prac for about 8 hours a day
