Tough play: China's pro gamers | DW Documentary

Alice Zhang is living her dream. She earns money playing computer games. But to survive in China's booming gaming scene you have to keep winning, and attract sponsors. And, in this male-dominated industry, that's far from easy.
China has become the center of the e-sports industry. More than a half a billion people around the world watch professionals play computer games like World of Warcraft via live stream. Most of the top teams come from China. E-sports is a multi-billion euro business. Players can earn up to two million euros per year, and transfer fees have reached levels paid for professional footballers. The industry is dominated by teenage boys and men in their early twenties. But women like Alice Zhang are also entering the professional gaming scene. When she was still in school her parents would punish her for spending more time gaming than studying. As a young adult, however, her passion for video games has landed Zhang a spot on a professional team. Holding on to it is hard work, though - as is convincing sponsors to keep supporting her. But that won't keep Alice Zhang from pursuing her dream of earning a living from gaming. A Report by Mathias Bölinger.

Get fed up seeing DOG EATING comments in every Chinese related topics, those ppl( Westerners ?) persistence is really impressive ! . Eating doggies, cats those animals that westerners treat as pets are also part of our culture( mostly in southern China) and some south east Asia countries, even in some pacific islands. As someone mentioned in their posts, cats, dogs are just livestock, like the pig in your home, wonder around in fields, gain fat,l and butchered. It's a kind of different mindset, or culture you may say. If someday, our people giving up eating dogs, I will be sad and knowing that another part of our culture has be assimilated.

What strikes me is that there is no comment about women and men teams? I mean I get it in sports cause of the different physiques but why the hell are the teams not mixed in e-sports? What does playing LoL have to do with being a man or woman. I am a man and played for 3 years never left bronze while I know enough ladies who will kick my ass. Its just a dumb custom taken from physical sports.

lol the mere fact that she thinks women esports athletes are on equal terms with male gamers just shows how much she is in denial. Men have faster reflexes and more precise movements and that's proven time and time again, if that wasn't the case then you would see a lot of mixed gender teams in esports but you don't.

Please Do not compare video games to soccer or any other sport where there is some kind of physical movement involved!!! Video game is not a sport, It's just a game which doesn't train your body and has 0 benefit to your health. Once and for all separate from each other games from sport. Anything whatever doesn't involve physical effort is NOT a sport!!!

Video games can be physically exacting too. If you don't believe me try playing 10h a day as this girl does. At any rate, the level of physical stress doesn't determine whether an activity is a sport or not. Most people would consider e.g. snooker, darts, and archery to be sports.

Although I don't play video games I must disagree with you. Esports are sports because of the discipline involved in training your muscles to move the mouse and keyboard tapping with high precision. They also require above average reflexes and hand-eye coordination.
