The Dark Side Of Non-Stop Gaming: eSPORTS (Part 4/5)

Ойын-сауық

WATCH PART 5 NOW - bit.ly/eSports-P5
Today, there are more people in the world who play the online multiplayer battle game League of Legends than there are people who live in France. We wanted to see how humanity got to this point, so VICE host Matt Shea flew to South Korea, a country where competitive gaming-also known as eSports-can either make you rich and famous or land you in rehab.
In Part Four, a group of college gamers take us on a night out in Seoul, where we stop by at the city's famous PC cafés before heading to its biggest superclub-an experience that blows the mind of one of the gamers, who is a nightclub first-timer.
Through the haze of a soju hangover, we get invited behind the scenes of a Korean gaming house. Later that evening, we meet an e-athlete who got caught up in a match-fixing scandal that drove him to a suicide attempt.

    What the actual fuck? He wants them to be social so he takes them to a night club? What on earth is so social about getting wasted in a deafeningly loud and dark environment anyway? These kids were not even problematic gamers; they got together, had a nice relaxed evening with some food and drinks, and played some games together. Seems plenty social to me! At least more so than the stupid club. And the way he seemed to think he was "showing them the joys of life" for the first time was gross as fuck. Like an out of place stepdad or something. Even worse was *the way he talked about the boy with the glasses*; assuming by looks alone that he is not the social or outgoing type. Someone who needs help from a "kind" stranger to be able to have a good time. Just awful! This guy had made up his mind about gaming way before this report even started! So why bother sending him? Newsflash: Gaming, when done in moderation, isn't any different from going to a club or whatever. It's just another form of entertainment! It can be enjoyed alone or with friends. And going to a nightclub certainly isn't superior than an evening of gaming. It's just more socially acceptable at this time. Though I have no idea why. If I ever have kids, I'd much rather they play videogames than hang out in a place that gives them access to alcohol, drugs, hearing damage and probably an STD or two. This knucklehead didn't even try to experience/understand the world these kids live in, which is a damn shame considering why he was there in the first place. :/ They were ready to give his idea of a good time a shot... so why couldn't he do the same? Even if just for the sake of, oh I don't know... journalism maybe?

    It may be hard for you to understand, but clubbing is social, more social than gaming. When you're gaming, you talk to people, but it's different than real human interaction. Usually when gaming there is only one method of communication, and that's typing or talking on the microphone. Your mind is also focused only on the social interaction in the club that is taking place, while when gaming you're focused on the game, and talking comes second. In a club, you're talking with a real person or group of people, there is body language, eye contact and verbal communication, it's definitely more social. When I go clubbing, I usually dance, drink and talk with people. Talking can be hard in night clubs, but half of clubbing tends to be hanging out in the areas out the front of clubs, meeting people and talking. Some clubs also have quiet rooms to people can chat. Clubbing is fun, you dance, you meet new people, you meet girls, and have a good time. With the guy in the glasses, I think that he wanted to help him break out of his bubble a bit, you can look at him and tell he's not a very outgoing, social or confident person. And he enjoyed the club and had a good time anyway, so what does it matter? I'm a League of Legends player too, and I have to say, clubbing is more fun than gaming ever is. Dancing with a cute girl is more satisfying than getting a penta kill will ever be. Also what's even more fun than clubbing is a house party or a rave. Also neither one is superior to the other, it's all a matter of opinion and what you prefer. The point of this documentary was obviously to get an outsiders view on the gaming scene. If they sent in some guy that knew a lot about League and gaming, it would be like every other gaming documentary, and that's not what vice is going for.

    Chris Merrick For you. Everything you said is more fun for you! Why "dancing with a cute girl"? I would rather MEET a cute girl somewhere where we can actually talk in peace. I would rather be in a bar, cafeteria or a tea place. I personally don't like clubs but go there anyways. My friends love it. I dance, I talk but Im not really having fun. Introverts are exhausted by this shit. But this is a world where only extroverts seem to exist so I get it.

    What an incredibly insincere and judgemental look at esports... Imagine if a reporter went to a soccer camp and said "we were having fun and becoming friends, but now all they want to do is play soccer. So I'm just gonna stand back here and wait for them to be done, and maybe we can be friends again." I know Vice is stupid at times, but come on... This is beyond dumb. You went there with an agenda and a preformed notion of what you wanted to say, and went full-on confirmation bias. Open-minded my ass.

    totally agree with you,. Yes it was quite rude to just play and ignore the guy who accompanied them, but its not like he didn´t know why they were going to that location. And draggin somebody into a club who doesn´t like clubs is just wrong. As wrong as draggin a hip hop fan to a metal concert and shouting at him "thats fun, what you are doing is shit" I also hate the usual clubs, They are crowded, noisy, you can´t really talk, the lighting is bad, the drinks are way overpriced and then there is the whole thing about "getting into a club" which I just despise. I mean its ok if a club has certains standards, like "no drunk people, no people who come in dirty stinking clothes" but the whole thing about "only the beautiful, the richand the powerful" is just bad. I was also wandering how these guys got into the club, I guess because vice and the camera was with them.

    I used to enjoy clubbing but you guys are right: Most people who go there are mindless. If you have deeper feelings and thoughts like I do the only way to relate to clubbers is to get really high and/or drunk and THEN start talking to them -- to get to their level mentally (and even then it's a careful balance because you might say or do something you'll regret).

It's as if he's equating clubbing with learning an instrument or something that gives a real sense of long term fulfillment in life. The vast majority of hobbies are complete wastes of time, so if you're going to try and make someone feel insecure about their hobby of choice, at least make sure yours isn't equally pointless. All that matters is they're spending their lives doing what they enjoy. If they wanted to be out clubbing, they probably would be.

    As a gamer/professional hermit, I can understand someone outside the culture finding it odd that a night in front a gaming-centric screen is far more appealing to the "coolness" that is generally associated with a banging nightclub. The problem here is that this journalist is an awkward hipster douche, who can't be seen as "cool" in any setting. Also, he assumes that the social interaction ends once the gaming starts. Personally, I'd prefer coop/competitive gaming with friends in my living room over some pc bar (westerner alert), regardless, either is more appealing than overspending on drinks while drunken meatheads are one accidental bump away from picking a fight in some nightclub. They are also awful places to meet women.

    GtheMVP there is no "social interaction" per se in gaming. most of the discussions in co-op or multiplayer games revolve around the game being played, decisions, strategy, insults and a lot of flame. Nothing really that can be regarded as "social" when by social you understand actually interacting with people on a human and personal level, like getting to know them, their likes, dislikes, their views, talking about subjects of common interest etc.And if you think that a night-club is just about drunken meat-heads you're wrong. but just like gaming has their flamers and game-ruiners, so do clubs have their meat-heads

    pl4free i'm gonna have to disagree with you. If you solo queue and play with random people, what you say is correct, but not if you play with friends. me and some friends used to meet up a lot at someone's place and game together and obviously you don't talk about the game exclusively, especially when taking a smoke between games or while queing but also during the games. I can tell you another story, a friend of mine used to play a lot of league and through facebook he found a local community of players. He then regularely skyped / played with those dudes and they ended up getting pretty good friends.

    I wish the presenter/host wasn't so biased with his presentation. I think it was rude and condescending for him to suggest that their idea of relaxing wasn't "right". You could easily do the same thing with someone who was hoping to become a professional in any skill based arena (basketball, football, baseball, etc.). Yes gaming isn't as popular and doesn't require a physical skill per se, but it's not like someone can just sit down and be excellent at the games.

If the documentary presented the good side of esports, they would know the exhilaration of winning and defeating their opponent, they would know the friendships and rivalries that occur, and so much more. Instead the focus is on how it's so bad to spend a night out gaming instead of clubbing lol

Of course if you play 24/7 you're gonna have terrible side effects, but if you play videogames for a few hours a week, it's a fun and healthy activity. I used to play videogames until I was 16, I don't play anymore because of work and other things, but I still watch some Age of Empires II or GTA (my favorite games as a kid) on youtube or twitch from time to time... they remind me of my childhood.

    SevenWilly Yes, it really does. Sitting on a bang all day? People who like to get smashed off their ass, frequent clubs, etc, still hold a job, still function in society. Geeking all day makes you as disfunctional as a meth addiction. I don't knock gaming, I do it too sometimes, but they took it to a level where it's way worse than drinking and getting laid. It's not in the activity, it's what you experience. I don't drink much either, or go to clubs. But this is kindergarten level here, where it all begins. These kids would panic and call for a medic if they got a bit tipsy. They're walking around numb minded thinking about the last bang they did and why that would be better than this, to meet people, find new interests, etc etc. Perfect path towards a mid-life crisis.

  • @SevenWilly

    @SevenWilly

    6 жыл бұрын

    Where did i say playing games all day, every day is healthy? No, that isn't healthy but compared to drinking and partying it is. If you were to drink all day every day you'd die. If you gamed all day everyday youd be brittle/ weak, have eye problems and most likely social probelms but you wouldn't die. And honestly drinks are as much as a clitch as a screen is. People act like "oh you need a computer screen to be able to take to people" and that isn't the case for the vast majority of gamers. Even the ones in this video go out to the PC bangs in groups of real life friends. Meanwhile alcohol does the same thing. So much people use alcohol as a clutch. they need it to be social and give them the confidence to talk to people. I stopped partying about half way into my college life. And i'm so much happier. Seriously, i was wasting money, to get sloshed, with peolpe i don't care about, not remember my night, and for what? It's overrated as hell. Now i stay in on the weekends and play games with my best friends from home and I'm so much happier. Plus the vast majority of people have no problem playing games and balancing life. I play only on the weekends and work go to classes during the week. And gaming all day makes you as disfunctional as a meth addiction? thats insanely ridiculous.

  • @whennever8202

    @whennever8202

    6 жыл бұрын

    SevenWilly Drinking and partying everyday will not kill you, unless you straight up an alcoholic. But let's pretend you're right, drinking every day kills you? Gaming all day means you have no life. Take your pick. And what do you mean "you didn't say gaming all day"? That's what this video is about, mate. What else is there to relate to? Am I supposed to figure out your inner train of thought differing from the context of the documentary? Too much gaming is as addictive as drugs, mate. There were kids killing themselves when they weren't allowed to get on their xbox. And this ain't no "I read it somewhere bs", I've been heavily addicted to crystal and I can see the supposed similarities. What you said about your regrets about partying and people you didn't care about and getting smashed? Mate, you can't judge that based on your own negative experiences from partying. You got nipped at? bullied? fake friends? trick chicks? There are other ways to party, you can go out there with your friends and just have fun, just as much as you have on your weekend lan parties. You look at a club and think "idiots wasting their lives"? I get how prejudice always come from past impressions though. It's not gaming against going out. It's gaming 14/7 against going out. Sure, stay the weekend, game with your friends and whatnot, it's fun and not the problem presented here. Just your reply is out the context of this video, which is what I was replying to, rationally assuming that's what you based your comment on as well.

    Another terrible documentary from VICE, if you're going to cover something that divides opinion so much don't get someone who knows nothing about the topic to present it.

    The guy knows nothing about esports and doesn't seem interested at all in the topic. Instead he believes clubbing the best thing to do with friends and doesn't even try to partake in the game they are playing.
