LYRICS:
Oh, thou blessed rock of ages
Hiding my dear soul indeed
When the storm around me rages
Rock of ages hide thou me
Hide me, oh, blessed rock of ages
'Till Thy blessed face I see
When the storm around me rages
Rock of ages, hide thou me
When my journey is completed
And there's no more work to do
Jesus guide my weary spirit
Happy land beyond the blue
Hide me, oh, blessed rock of ages
'Till Thy blessed face I see
When the storm around me rages
Rock of ages, hide thou me
Hide me, oh, blessed rock of ages
'Till Thy blessed face I see
When the storm around me rages
Rock of ages, hide thou me
Rock of ages, hide thou me

In my opinion Rex Nelon was one of the most underrated bass singers. He might not have been the lowest bass singer, but he was certainly one of the smoothest.

@@1954terry1954 I didn't know that. The Oak Ridge Boys are awesome! I just read recently that after all these years they are going to retire.
I would've love to hear Rex Nelon do the whole song.
2:32 those low notes 🤩
Dare I say, Rex's timbre is so much more pleasing to me and moreover he blended much better with the trio! It is so sad that almost no one acknowledges Rex...!

There sure isn't much on Rex. And he had an amazing voice. JD had such a crips clear voice back in the day. But he smoked 5 packs of cigs a day. He died of throat cancer, so that's why his voice didn't have much to give when he was older

Go back in time when JD sang this with the Blackwood Bro. He joined them after the BW Bros. airplane tragedy. June 30th. 1954. JD invented the Tour Bus, each singer with his own microphone, wrote over 500 Gospel Songs, and started the annual Quartet Convention that still goes on until now. Plus Guinness Book record lowest sung and recorded note, plus 2 grammy awards with Elvis.
Many talk about the great bass singers on this, and they are... I want to say a word about Hovie Lister. Hovie, was as fine a piano player as you could find (without even mentioning his emcee work or singing!) I am a blessed man because of gospel music!
OH, how I LOVE this song today!!! Coronavirus, move over! Jesus, our Rock of Ages is here!

JD Sumner is the best bass singer of all times. 🎙🎶🎵
There are and will be many others, but J.D. Sumner will always be the one at the top. Remember growing up hearing him on the radio "turn your radio on" ? I do
J. D. Sumner's high notes are many people's low notes. What a voice.

My Great Grandfather, Brantley C George, wrote this beautiful song on a brown paper bag with a pencil sitting under a tree in his front yard in SW Georgia. The rights to it were bought for the measly sum of $25 and was performed by the Stamps Quartet. It does something pecial to my heart every time I hear it -

@@dougsmith9099 Wow! What’s the tagline: ‘Everybody doesn’t like something, but nobody doesn’t like Sara Lee!’ I argue that The Big Chief is the greatest bass SINGER of all time, but JD was the undisputed lowest; great innovator; funny as could be; had a very underrated upper range; was an excellent harmonizer (especially with Jake and the Master’s V); and was a prolific songwriter.
