The Full Story Behind Nirvana's FINAL EVER Recording Session

Ойын-сауық

In this video i talk about Nirvana's final recording session in January of 1994 where they recorded their last song "You know you're right". I go into detail on the events leading up to the session and the session itself, and how ultimately the band would come to an end not long after this.

Would be coo if that was true but pretty sure if he would have stayed alive they would have disbanded. Dave grohl has said multiple times in interviews that they were all tired and they needed a break. Kurt prolly would have gon on to do solo work and Dave prolly would have started the foo fighters and Krist prolly would have still faded into obscurity

It’s a great song and I don’t mean to diminish from it or it’s legacy, but my first impression upon hearing it was that something was off. I think it has a little do with 1990s dynamics re: digital media, but it sounded copy/pasted in places. Again, still a marvel and great bookend to the posthumous vision of the guys.

It’s a really good song. Not a “masterpiece”. It’s HARD, intentionally so, like most of In Utero (released in ‘93, but shares much in common with YKYR) but the song is “made” because of Cobain’s intense vocal.

@@SneedyKetler Yeah, it’s a good song but not Nirvana’s best. Ultimately it is just a demo and it feels unfinished and even a little unstructured. With a little work and real “let’s make our next album” studio time I’m sure it would have been amazing.

If you have kids, especially a son, as a father you know that look in Kurts eyes as a 5 year old or so looking up at his dad in that picture. He’s looking at his hero with amazement, joy, and admiration all rolled into one without being aware of it. When I see that look in my sons eyes it makes any pain or problems vanish instantly and is the feeling of life’s greatest joy for me. That look in Kurts eyes completely contrasts Kurts adult mental problems and the fashion in which his life ended. That photo is so powerful in that way it radiates tears of joy and pain.

Courtney played this song when Hole did MTV unplugged right after Kurt died. So technically that was the first time fans heard the "new" Nirvana song (those that hadn't heard it live before)... Courtney singing this song is ironic. She clearly had no idea that she was singing about herself. Which shows you a lot about her...

But her performance of the song was titled "You've Got No Right." And she sang a version which excluded all the lyrics that are believed to be about Kurt wanting to leave her. Drafts of the song had already been around and performed for a long time before a final Nirvana track was released, but it does seem likely that Kurt added in those lines about wanting to leave toward the end. Which, if true, does point to the highly probable reality that Kurt was looking for a way out of his relationship (or life). Courtney Love's retort: "you've got no right."

It’s sad seeing people become happy and have a lots of plans then unfortunately dying. With Kurt he wanted to do more and had way more musical talent left in the tank, he obviously wanted to be on better terms with his dad and everything else said in the video. And someone like John Lennon, he had so much he wanted to do, he fixed himself. Hell he even wanted to reform the Beatles and get a better relationship with Julian Lennon his son. Both tragically taken from us too damn soon.

That was painfully obvious. The Beatles got to decide to continue making albums without touring anymore. Why couldn't they? Touring kills so many artists who no longer can even do what they love which is making NEW music and forces them to cope with ridiculous amounts of stress by consuming more drugs than they ever had just to get through it.

I saw a random band live in a known rock bar a mere month before the release of Nevermind. I remember this band being good, it had this blind lead singer, the songs were good and I enjoyed myself but I was wasted drunk and could barely remember the evening. That is until one day walking through my University campus someone was blasting Nevermind out their window in a high rise dorm. I had to know who this band was, as the music reminded me of the band I saw mere weeks before. I ran up to the room where the music was blasting, barged in and was almost demanding to know who this band was. Nirvana, album Nevermind, got it. I skipped class that day to go buy that album and blasted it non stop all day. I lartied even more and harder than ever with my room mate and girls. I swear to God, if I could turn back time to 1990-1991 it was the best time to be alive. The music, the girls, the drugs, the fun, the randomness, the parties, the girls, me with long ass hair being free and a metal hippie, Lalapalooza…. the absolute peak of it all. Never to be repeated…

As Nirvana was booked at Robert Lang Studios, North Seattle, WA January 28-30, 1994 the first two days the 28th & 29th Kurt was a No Call/No Show. So Krist and Dave recorded a bunch of Instrumental demos, etc, then on Sunday January 30, 1994 in the Evening Kurt finally showed up to Robert Lang Studios, with no explanation why he didn't show up the past 2 days and no one asked, Kurt also showed up with none of his Equipment. Luckily Earnie Bailey was Fixing one of Kurts Univox Hi-Fliers, and had it in his car so Earnie grabbed Kurt's Univox Hi-Flier for Kurt and Kurt used his Univox Hi-Flier and borrow Earnie's Pedal Board which had some of the same effect-boxes Kurt used... (For example the Polychorus).. but on "You Know You're Right" Kurt used Earnie's 1980s Ibanez SM-9 Super Metal Distortion pedal.... Sometime during the recording session, a Black Cat walked into the Studio and while Kurt was laying on the Floor as he says the cool marble floor helps his back, Kurt sat up and drew the black cat on the Wall of the Studio... If I'm not mistaken I believe Kurt's Black Cat Drawing is still there at Robert Lang Studios in North Seattle WA...

He didn't want anything to do with the scrag. In so many interviews Courtney's said she "wanted them to get clean and Kurt wouldn't allow it...that he wanted them to keep using because he only cared about getting high". Such a low act to drag your deceased husband's name through the dirt like that as it is but to fabricate shit to do it....extremely low. It shows her true character and what she's about right there. Narcissistic, manipulative and willing to say or do anything to get her way.

She'd be attending to her husband. She knew she was going to be left with pretty much nothing if he divorced her and she even admitted Kurt was worth more dead than alive and his death would boost sales for her album. Tom Grant recorded all phone calls and the ones with Courtney are cringe worthy. She slips up with contradictions so many times without even realizing it. Just little things that could be missed by some but very telling to others. On the times she does realise she said something she shouldn't have, she back tracks on what she said. But nobody sees this, in fact all accounts are that he was going through tough times with Courtney, divorce on table, but in general was in good spirits. All accounts! Makes plans to make more music in the studio. Makes plans to play with other people. Consistently talks about taking music in a different direction.
