In this final episode of Season 1 of The String Bar, we explore Klip's rich history and rise to fame in the natural gut string game. In this documentary-style video essay, we ask the question - are natural gut strings still relevant today?
We take a look at the origin of Klip, how they got their name, travel back to Egypt and go into King Tut's tomb, find out how natural gut strings are made, and why collagen is so important.
After conducting a full review of Klip Legend 16, we show you how natural gut could lead us into the future of tennis strings.

    An excellent video production. Thank you for doing this. There is some more history to natural gut used in tennis. Pierre Babolat is accepted as the first person, in 1875, to use natural gut for tennis strings when he was consulted by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield, who formalised the game we know today. When Klipspringer started producing in the 1920's, tennis was a worldwide sport. For some brief history on natural gut, go to www.tennis-warehouse.com/learning_center/gear_guides/tennis_string/babolat_natural_gut_the_original_tennis_string.html Also, I recommend using this site www.stringforum.net/stringdb.php which contains some helpful comparisons on strings. It is excellent. Just a technical suggestion to the tester on the camera-side of the court: as pertaining to the footage, you stand off-centre to give forehand your preference, which is why you slice your backhand all the time (at least in the video). Try standing slightly to the right of centre so you can practice top-spin offensive baseline strokes with the backhand. Your opponent, on the other hand, is a more balanced ground stroke player. Keep up the good work.

    Peter thank you for this info you've added, it will be helpful to others here! I started slicing a few years ago when I hurt my left arm on the 2 hander, and the slicing just stuck. I want to hit top one handers but have struggled to actually incorporate it in a real match and resort back to the slice, and it works well at my level. Need to get a ball machine and put some work in to developing a one hander!

    @@EvokeTennis thank you for sharing your tennis history. It is always difficult to restructure one's game (mind) after an injury. I encourage you to maintain practice and coaching even when you feel no improvement. Your desire and enjoyment of the game will sustain you. I began with a one-handed backhand at age 5 and achieved strength and confidence in match play by age 15. At the time male double-handed backhands were uncommon in my club. Then I played someone who used a double-backhand, whereupon I decided to learn it. I incorporated it into my game with some success but when I reverted back to my one-handed backhand my game fell into disarray. This caused conflict for some years. Now, my one-handed stroke is much stronger; and although not as natural, my double-handed stroke is reliable enough for match play.

    i keep watching this video because it's a masterpiece, hands down best tennis video about anything ever. if you were ever to produce another video that is similar to this, could you add a dramatic close up shot of a tennis stroke and the tennis ball hit sound at the ending? Klip gut is fine. The problem with people who complain about Kilp gut is that they don’t know what they are doing. Kilp gut is a firm gut. No need for pre stretch. Nowaday, it is better to string Klip gut on the mains and poly on the crosses. Strung poly 2-4 pounds lower than the gut. By doing this, you let the gut slide over the poly. Resulting in a lot more spin.

    Hi Nice Video , Would you recommend The Klip Natural Gut as a hybrid with Luxion ALU Power Rough? What would you recommend in the mains and croses ( I have a Wilson Blade 98). What tension's would you recommend? I want the strings to last a long time which gages last the longest? Thanks very much for your help. Duncan

  • @EvokeTennis

    @EvokeTennis

    4 жыл бұрын

    Haven't actually tried that combo but I hear that rough actually still provides a good slippery surface for the gut. I'd stick with 16 gauge for long lasting on the gut and consider a 17 on the cross to get some elasticity. I run full bed of poly at 43 lbs and full bed of gut at 55, and I couldn't see going much higher than that personally. But just depends how crisp a bed you want but I do think 55 is a good starting point with the cross 4 or 5 lbs less on that poly cross. Only way is just to try it out and then adjust up or down a few lbs on the next restring to your liking! Thanks for chiming in I hope to test some hybrids very soon!

    @@EvokeTennis The Klip Legend 16 Gut played phenomenal in my Angell K7 Red! There was plenty of power, excellent ball pocketing and feel as well as control along with the comfort. Some shots that looked like they were going out landed in before the baseline. I could really feel the ball sinking into the string bed. The only question is how long the string lasts or remains playable before too much tension loss. I will report back further in a few weeks for additional feedback.

    Michael Cena very nice! Depends on head size and string pattern and racket stiffness but 50-55 lbs could be a starting point. It takes a bit to break in but really increases comfort after a few hours. Generally full bed gut is strung higher tension than normal because it will break in and last long, giving it some room to drop in tension over time.

    Federer and Djokovic still use gut, and they've been number one longer than Nadal. Multifilament is pretty close to gut, but just too dead in my opinion. Also, you can string up gut and leave in in there forever, as long as you protect it from humidity. Its tension retention is unbeatable.
