    The band Phish actually did a live cover of the Chilling, Thrilling around of The Haunted House in 2014 on Halloween and it’s a great spin on the classic album. The stage was fully decked out with halloween props and actors wearing halloween costumes dancing to the music. It was incredibly neat for any fan of The Haunted Mansion or anyone interested in Disney history in general. Full videos of the performance can be found on KZread and it pays great homage to the original album while still experimenting with new sounds.

    Hey everybody, I had originally intended to get this out a little earlier today, but ended up having to re-render this thing a couple different times (which is a very long process). But on the bright side, getting delayed this late still lets us have a spooky midnight-premier of this video. Let me know if you made it here early!

    I wasn't aware of the three later lp's, only the Thrilling, Chilling etc. which thrilled me no end when I discovered it at 11 years old. It helped me turn my parents one-car garage into a haunted house to scare the neighborhood kids for a couple of years. I recorded the wind, rain and thunder sfx to a small reel to reel tape recorder many times over so I could let it run for an hour at a time. For years after I used it as atmosphere for trick-or-treaters. I even pulled it out much later as an adult when I hosted a Halloween party. Of course, these days you can find lots of sfx cd's and downloads which makes things a lot easier, but I sure got a lot of mileage out of a record I probably spent a couple bucks on. Great stuff - thanks for posting!

    I inhereted my late grandparents' complete collection of vinyl records. The 1963 Haunted House album was among them. Despite a near-moldy, dust-covered sleeve, the record is carefully preserved, warp-free, clean and has little-to-no scratches. I intend to keep it that way, especially since it's in a perfectly playable state!

    An interesting bit of trivia: while most of the sound effects heard on the record were original Disney studio creations, that particularly long spine-chilling shriek that can be heard at the end of The Long Fuse (@ 8:35 in your video, also used elsewhere on the record) was straight up "sampled" from the 1946 film Great Expectations! It's the shriek Miss Havisham makes when her room catches fire. You can hear it for yourself at this link to the scene (her shrieking begins at around the 1:09 mark) Of course that was not a Disney film, so I've always wondered how they ended up using that effect for the record. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZOhsLtvgNKxh9I.html

    Excellent video. I have all three of these records. Always have been a haunted mansion fan. (You should see my front room.) Not really sure if calling them 'forgotten' is apropos considering the wide distribution from back in the day and eve today, but I suppose to the uninitiated it makes sense. 😁 You might be interested to know that Pete Reneday did his Ghost Host lines at the same time as Paul Frees, as Disney took samples of several different actors to decide on the voice that would be used through out the ride. Even Elanor Audley did a try at it. So the opening ghost host lines on the record Story and Song from the Haunted Mansion is actually his voice test with the added echo. Pete also was not English, but thought the accent might add something to the character. If you can find the Red Dot CD of Haunted Mansion, a lot of those original tests are on it. Plus it is a definitive CD for the Haunted Mansion fan. I am happy to let you know, if you didn't already, that The Story and Song from the Haunted Mansion and Thrilling Chilling Sounds from the Haunted House are available to listen to on Spotify.

    @@SteveCarras No disrespect intended. On the record album The Story and Song from the Haunted Mansion, the Ghost Host was voiced by Pete Renaday, using an accent and manner of speaking inspired by English actor Boris Karloff. That being said... On the ride, the character is voiced with a Mid-Atlantic accented voice provided by Paul Frees that has been described as "gleefully sardonic".

    The first time I heard about these I was so happy to hear a description of the attic scene as it was intended. I really wish that Hattie was back alongside Beating Heart rather than being placed outside of the Connie scene. The subtle yet eerie suspense of the attic as it was planned, with the heart sound, the head appearing with it, the ghosts popping up and the creepy versions of early Beating Heart were a lot more effective than what they have now imo. Sad that Beating Heart was there mostly without Hattie and he is there now without her. Also I think this record is the one place they're mentioned to be a couple, which is super interesting. Awesome video, you did an amazing job!

  • @megelizabeth9492

    @megelizabeth9492

    Putting Hattie on the balcony, was actually first proposed by Tony Baxter himself, if I remember correctly! He thought that having him be on the balcony overlooking the graveyard instead of the attic would allow for better and more controlled lighting (since that was the thing that killed the original hatbox ghost effect) , and adding a fun element for guests to look at before the drop into the graveyard scene.

    "It makes you wonder why they didn't use the original (Ghost Host) narration..." Mainly because THIS trip through our favorite haunted abode includes quite a lot more for the GH to describe...from ghosts chasing each other to the 'sound of rattling chains', to more intense insights into the Raven character ('he may want to BETTER himself!'), plus the inclusion of Hattie in the attic...overall, far more detailed descriptions of what you would otherwise simply be mostly SEEING if you were on the attraction itself... I have this entire album memorized, I listened to it so often as a kid, I even recall EVERY line to this day, LOL...

    You're confusing the Ghost Host spiel (performed by Pete Renoudet) with the Narrator (Thurl Ravenscroft). The real reason Paul Frees wasn't used was money. He wanted royalties as a recording artist, and Pete did it instead for a one-time fee.

    @@gerryu21220 And as my answer elswhere says, Paul also reportedly wanted more money per even a one time fee, to say nothing about the roylaties. Not the only such artist, Paul Winchell had this with Tigger, thus the controversial recasting for 1990s Tigger projects, only by the time "THE TIGGERMOVIE" was started in 1997, Paul Winchell WAS READY to return, but was replaced by JIm Cummings..in addition to the two Pauls, at WB, Mel Blanc also started charging high, explaing why Bugs Bunny appeared not as mcuh in the 60s-70-s (then he might have been embarrased..) Getting back to Disney and Paul Frees, he also was replaced for the same premium price issue for the PIRATES ride.:)

  • @gerryu21220
    @gerryu212203 жыл бұрын

    3 or 4 of the Chilling, Thrilling sound effects were actually used in the Endless Hall/Corridor of Doors in the attraction. The reason Paul Frees' performance wasn't used on the Story and Song Lp is because of his contract. They would have had to pay royalties. It was cheaper to hire Pete to record the lines instead for a one-time fee. The album was written by X. Atencio, and based on one of his earlier scripts for the ride. Hence the raven talking and the Ghost Host in the Foyer as a marble bust. Robie Lester voiced the Raven on the album as well as Karen. X. Atencio voiced the Conservatory Coffin occupant in both the album and attraction, but an alternate version was used on the Lp. The Story and Song Lp contains many alternate tracks that were recorded for, but not used in the attraction itself. The Stretch Room scream from the attraction is heard on the Lp in the Corridor of Doors, and the scream was Jimmy MacDonald himself. He also created the "tuned wind" track himself.

    There's actually several snippets of unused bits of audio floating around the internet, and it's just so interesting to see how it evolved over time. I imagine the album was based from an earlier incarnation of the script, and it kinda provides something of a bizarro take on what the mansion might have been at one point, and all the ways it defers from the actual finished attraction.

    I was fortunate enough to get the kids version of the Haunted Mansion record as a hand me down from my step sister when I was a kid. It is an original pressing. My father got the Thrilling, Chilling Sounds of The Haunted House as a 1969 pressing and I used to listen to it all the time. My drama teacher (Mr. Best) used the narrated story tracks to test our improvisational skills. Disney needs to do a re-release of "The Thrilling, Chilling Sounds of The Haunted House" because kids nowadays would love the chance to react to these tracts. It was a fun album.

    BTW: Disney digital artist Ray Keim actually did a 3D model of the haunted house from the "Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House" cover art. He goes into detail deconstructing the image (for example what appears to be a large porch on the house is actually a gazebo) and filling in missing details. Unfortunately unlike his other 3D models he's never released this in a PDF model format. It's still quite cool though! www.haunteddimensions.raykeim.com/index364.html

    Seeing the Haunted Mansion queue at the beginning of the video suddenly made me sad for all the new changes they're doing to it in the parks this year. They destroyed everything...

    Wow, I had inherited that first record from my older brother when I was little! Sadly it's gone missing and even when I had it the sleeve was lost, but I fondly remember playing the sound effects every October. I have the second one in CD form, and the third is completely new to me!

    Im working on trying to find all of these. So far ive been only able to find thrilling chilling sounds in both original and re release( with the party ideas), and of course the song and story from the haunted mansion. Still looking though.

    Now that Vinyl is coming back maybe Disney can re release all these with added bonus stuff. I would so buy it. Also still mad that for WDW 50th we didn't get any musical history collections like we did for Disneylands. Missed opportunity if you ask me. Especially for all the Epcot stuff we could have gotten.
