The History of & Changes to The Haunted Mansion | Disneyland

The Haunted Mansion is one of Disney's longest running and most popular dark rides. Since it's grand opening in 1969, the attraction has become an iconic piece of Disneyland.

I'm completely on your side about keeping the Haunted Mansion as original as possible. They're making another Haunted Mansion movie with Guillermo del Torro as director, and while I'm sure it's going to be amazing, I really hope they don't let it influence any changes they make to the ride the way they did with Pirates of the Caribbean!

I screamed bloody murder and the guys in the car behind us laughed their ass off !

I love how the Claude Coats' train of thought for a darker scarier haunted mansion was later echoed by imagineer Jeff Burke, and how a much darker and grim version of the Haunted Mansion found it's way to Europe in the form of Phantom Manor in Disneyland Paris. You can still see how Phantom Manor's design also harkens back to earlier designs by Harper Goff. Phantom Manor or "Ravenswood Manor" as it is unofficially known has quite a tragic backstory, and lacks most of the whimsical elements the Original American versions have. It is funny to see how all these versions have similar, yet different themes.

When I went to California a few years ago, I rode this version of the ride multiple times just to see if I could spot where the glass was hit. I love how they fixed it on the cheap too! Instead of ripping off the roof, and closing the ride for months to repair. they put a fake plastic spider on it and left it as is because it looked like a spiders web. I think it was a brilliant idea, and a very cheap yet effective way to fix the ride without closing it down for months on end! :D

But mostly i wanted to comment to say thank you for including captions in your video - I have an audio processing disorder and while i don't always have trouble, your speed made it nearly impossible for me to follow without them. I clicked them on a whim not expecting to find any, or just the auto-captioning (which is never good) and I was pleasantly surprised to find actual captions! I would love to see an episode on Delta Dreamflight in the Magic Kingdom. Always a favorite of my family's whenever we'd go. So weirdly out of place to have an EPCOT-esque dark ride tucked away in Tomorrowland.

I went on it a couple of years ago, and it had been ruined it for me. The ride now goes twice as fast! You don't get to see the whole seance, they rush you through it. The long ride was worth the wait, you really felt gratified at the end. Now it just flies by.

I have always been obsessed with the Haunted Mansion, since I was a kid...and this is an excellent history of the attraction. I adore the ride so much, I had always wanted to create my own version of it, just a tad more 'adult'...and I finally determined a way to do it...all as miniature, fully working sets with FX and all, filmed with a mini DV camera, made to look like a POV 'on ride' video...can't post a link here (KZread blocks links now) but just look for 'Daark Valley Orphanage' on my channel, would love to hear your take on the project...and thanks for the well made video...

I about crapped my pants as a kid when the hitchhikers came on board. I do know that the effect was completely changed last time I went though

Every time I have gone to Disneyland, it's always been in the autumn or winter time, so it's always been Nightmare Before Christmas themed. (which I thought was kinda dippy) So I have never gotten to experience the "vanilla" version of the ride.

I knew a man who helped design the ride in another disney park. His name was mr. Caldwell.... he was a teacher at my high school. He had the blueprints proudly displayed on his wall and talked fondly of it.

I think my favorite room in the Haunted Mansion has always been ever since I was a kid it has always been the ballroom dance. Because I knew these were all animatronics but of course I had a vivid imagination so I always try to keep the immersion but what really inspired me was seeing the transparent dancing ghosts I had no idea what that was... you can't make a robot invisible! It really was the thing that I always remember most I forgot all about the bride and the singing busts it was seen those ballroom dancing ghosts that I remember in my childhood

I have to admit, putting the Victorian mansion in Frontier Land was a smart move, particularly when it got its renovation to an Antebellum style.

It's worth mentioning that that suit of armor seen at the beginning of the ride, to the right of the endless hallway, has been there since the opening- and wasn't added in the 80s to replace the short lived live actor.
