10:35 Learn more about cod liver oil!
Today we’re going to talk about the first sign of vitamin A deficiency: nyctalopia. Nyctalopia is night blindness.
The active form of vitamin A is called retinol. Retinol is needed for peripheral vision and to see in dim light.
Beta-carotene is the precursor to retinol-it needs to convert into retinol to become active.
Thinking that you’re getting enough of the active form of vitamin A because you’re consuming beta-carotene can cause you to become vitamin A deficient.
It’s important to consume the active form of vitamin A to support your eyes and your overall health.
Foods rich in vitamin A (retinol):
• Cod liver oil
• Grass-fed liver
• Raw cheese
• Butter (raw)
• Cream (raw)
• Egg yolk
Benefits of vitamin A:
• It helps you see in the dark
• It prevents dry eyes
• It helps the eyes compensate
• It helps prevent rough, scaly, or dry skin
• It supports the immune system and helps prevent infections
• It supports healthy mucus membranes and your internal skin
• It helps support childhood development
Top causes of vitamin A deficiency:
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Polymorphism
• Pasteurization
• Low-fat diets
• Liver damage
• Lack of bile
• Gut damage

I had an office job for over 24 years and it was killing me and my vision was horrible. I decided to humble myself and get a job with UPS as a seasonal driver and I have to admit, being outside all day and after the sun goes down and looking at the numbers on houses to drop off packages has improved my vision significantly. I can clearly see at night now after a month of working there; not to mention I lost 14 lbs. On top of my diet, eating my keto and vitamins, especially vitamin A. I am a female, age 49.

When doing nutrition consulting, in the absence of bloodwork and the specialized equipment, I'd ask a simple question: "If you go into a dark movie theater, how long does it take your eyes to adjust to the darkness--5 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds or a minute?" If the answer is more than 15 seconds, there was a good chance they were vitamin A deficient. I had one occasion to be a bit arrogant when a woman came into my health food store. After greeting her, I asked her, "Have you considered that the reason you get chest colds is because of your low vitamin A levels?" It was a jaw-dropping moment for her. She had come during the evening wearing sunglasses, and I noticed her skin that showed signs of inflammation. When asked why she wore sunglasses even when it was dark, she said she thought it looked cool. After she had taken vitamin A for a couple of weeks, she returned for more; her skin looked better, and she was not wearing sunglasses! When asked why, she said she thought it was better for people to see her eyes when communicating. No one's brain is going to spontaneously relate sensitivity to bright lights and glare to a lack of vitamin A, but will instead resolve the "cognitive dissonance" by a comfortable rationalization such as looking cool. We had an extended conversation regarding the multiple roles vitamin A plays with vision, skin health, and immune response of the lungs and mucus membranes (your "skin" on the inside).

Vitamin a and vitamin D fight a bit for dominance. It’s good to get a blood test to make sure you’re supplementing the right thing and not getting a toxic amount of the wrong thing. It would actually make sense for me to have a vitamin a deficiency for three reasons beyond the difficulty seeing in the dark while young. One I don’t eat vitamin a rich foods. Two I heavily supplement with vitamin D. I never drink alcohol, yet my liver could actually be better for my age. Again, even some pharmacist will test your blood to see if you have deficiencies in an area.

I started taking cod liver oil because I watched one of your previous videos regarding it. I was having a really bad case of dry eyes. I kept artificial tears in my purse and had a few around the house like that's how bad it was even bought 3 warm mist humidifiers. I've tried omega 3 fish oil in the past but would break out in a rash so I was truly hesitant on trying cod liver oil, and the artificial tears was losing its touch.... But after giving the cod liver oil a try my eyes feel so much better now. I haven't had to use any artificial tears. Thank you so much 💓

My so-called vitamin A deficiency signs turned about to be caused by low zinc status. The metabolism of vitamin A into retinaldehyde and retinoic acid, the active forms, requires zinc at each metabolic step. I needed Zinc picolinate before I was able to absorb and correct properly.

Vitamin A is a nutrient that is rising in dietary consumption and fortification. Vitamin A has a counterbalancing relationship with vitamin D. My vitamin D would not go up to a good level until I stopped vitamin A. Presumably zinc is being used up in it's role as a vitamin A detoxifier. Explains a lot. I followed Weston A Price Foundation dietary advice for many years. I used to joke that WAPF diet was the "gain weight diet". Mind blowing for sure.

@@living2day617 I don't think so. I never even heared of it before. All he told me is that everything looks fine but I'm farsighted in one eye and shortsighted in another so he suggested glasses. However, another eye doctor gave me glasses years ago for that same thing and I was having bad headaches every time I'd use them. I don't wanna spend couple hundred of $$$ on glasses and than have the same thing happen, but I'm also worried that by not wearing them, I might be doing more damage.

I read an article when my three children were very young about the children of Alaska having excellent eyesight until they started them in kindergarten at five years of age instead of six years of age. The children began to have to wear glasses. Obviously too much close up eye strain at too young of an age! The article recommended for children to take a lot of breaks during the day, go outside and try to find a squirrel in the tree or a bird in the distance and specifically practice using their long distance vision. I did this with my three children while I homeschooled them and none of them to this day wear glasses. They are all grown adults in their 30s. 😊

Thank you Dr Berg. Your videos are invaluable and you are the best teacher . I've never received such information from any doctor so far and I suspect it's because they probably stopped educating themselves after med school. I've been having periodic blurred vision or poor vision since the last few months . I've seen two ophthalmologists . They found nothing wrong on examination and I was prescribed drops for dry eyes. However, that has not really helped with focus beyond the feeling of relief from dryness. I am 57, not diabetic, and my TSH is normal. The ophthalmologist and my GP were unable to explain why I am having less than desirable vision. A Vitamin-A deficiency seems to be a plausible reason . I'll explore that angle. Thanks a ton. You're a blessing

Bought cod liver oil , took a teaspoon of that every day for a while and the night blindness went away. I know that you can over do the oil based vitamin A . I drink carrot juice often nowadays.

I remember reading that vitamin A is fat soluble, not water. So you don't pee it out like excess B vitamins. It builds up in your fat stores. You can have too much. I would probably get my levels tested and go from there. I take Lutein for my eyes, it has helped dramatically with night blindness. Might do some cod liver oild every now and then now.

Ahh yes, rat milk… The name alone floods my brain with warm memories of Christmas’ past. Mum would make the best Rat-nog and there was always a big plate of mouse butter cookies and a big warm glass of rat milk set out for Santa. Little Timmy would always drink it straight from the teet. We’d catch him in the root cellar mouthing the new years rats well before they were ready! He always asked for another drink before heading out into the night. Tis the season to drink rat’s milk! Happy Holidays to Dr. Berg, Karen and crew!

@@huynguyen7572 I am using a no name brand for veterinary use for racing horses. Then it is guaranteed to be really fresh and carefully prepared, since horses are very picky. The price is about $20 per Liter. I have had it tested a long time ago and it was confirmed to be identical to the much more expensive (3-5 x) human use product. One bottle lasts for about 4 months. As a safety check, I give a bit to my cats before trying a new brand. They have a way better understanding of quality than I have. Dogs may do the job too, but they are more tolerant to rancidity.

I really like when you talk of precursor bioavailability. Could you also make a habit of mentioning half life and stacking/reserve? Like if you are carrots every day without fail surely you wouldn't need 20lbs every day for the effects to remain present? And based on pill intake, how long do stuff remain in your body for instance i know with magnesium of you take more than your body can absorb you pee/poop the extra. And when it comes to 5htp there is a maximum speed of conversation into serotonin so there's no point taking more than needed either. Would love these details in your videos about all nutrients and minerals :3
