The First Sermon in America

This video looks at the history of the first sermon in America at the Plymouth Colony. The man was Robert Cushman, a deacon, who had come to inspect the investment of the colony. In the end, he preached the first sermon ever in the new colonies.

I enjoy your lectures Professor Reeves but, the first sermon in North America was in St. Augustine, Florida.

Yeah think I got caught here with too much a 'click bait' title. Really the point is the first sermon amongst the Puritan settlers not in all of human history. Have to take my lumps for making it sound that way, though! :)

So there were no sermons at Jamestown in the 13 years before Plymouth was founded?

14 generation back ? That's my blood line, I'm Thomas Cushman, family history completely agrees with your findings in this video. Moms blood goes back to the daughters of the revolution. My KZread channel named after grandfather Dr. Otis, a veterinarian used and taught cannabis is medicine. I have a deep love for the freedom of this country, for the privilege of being a Christian in America and a consumer of cannabis that carries the name Doctor Otis, old school RSO...just subscribed to your channel no slant just fact. thank you

The first sermon in America was preached in Pensacola Fl. in 1559 by Roman Catholic ministers (Dominican Friars).

Santa Escritura - While 50% of my ancestry is Irish Catholic, and indeed 100% of myself is Catholic, most all of my father's line turned Protestant at the time of Henry VIII and the English 'Reformation'. One of my clerical ancestors who ventured over to the American Colonies was Samuel Skelton, the first minister of the 'First Church of Salem' (the original Puritan church in North America), some 80years after those Dominican Friars.

Wasn't Robert Cushman in charge of the financing of the Mayflower/Speedwell 1620? and had to turn back because the speedwell was taking on H2O / sinking? And later 1621 sailed in his replacement ship the "Fortune" with son Thomas. Left Thomas in New World with Governor, sailed back after a few months the Plymoth, never to see son again as Robert died of Black Plague back in England? Thx

Well done video, it exhibits the pervasive faith and purpose at Plymouth. I have a question about Florida though. The Spanish (Castille) had colonies in the state with chaplains more than 100 years before (1513) followed by other coloniesand Christian missions throughout the state by the middle 17th century. What is the criteria for America? The Spanish also had missions throughout what is now Arizona and New Mexico throughout the 2nd half of the 16th century.

Wait more Simpsons jokes? I have been meaning to watch this video for some time and now that I have, I am a bit flabbergasted. No donuts? Ok in all seriousness I was hoping for a more in depth story and meaning from this moment but perhaps this could lead to a series of lectures on sermons in the colonies from the old world to the new world. People have mentioned Florida and Virginia settlements but I believe there is mounting evidence of a Templar presence prior to Columbus or Spanish exploration. In fact European knowledge of and trips to the "New World" may have been far earlier and still fall within the post Roman European world. What did Christians know about the new World and when did they know it?

Always need more Simpsons jokes. This was an attempt at more of a 'this day in church history' piece. I liked it but the title is too click bait, I'll admit (and have admitted in other comments, especially since Catholics were in North America first). But as you mention it's hard to do any substantive analysis of a period when you do these quick hits. You'll notice I'm not doing them like this anymore!! :)

Yes, I think I said this in another comment too, but this is me getting caught doing a bit too much 'click bait' in the title. I realized only after KZread viewers cried foul that it seems to make the Puritan story the ONLY story of America's founding. Yikes! But you have to have a thick skin when saying things in public so I am happy to take my lumps on this one. :)

Why regard it as taking "lumps"? Instead, why not be grateful for the benefits of crowd-sourcing your fact-checking? I remember the pre-digital days of editorial fact-checking; often a physical trip to the library was involved to resolve a single query.

Oh I do. I mean 'taking lumps' in a silly way. I'm actually loving the crowd-sourcing component of KZread. Something I never thought about before it started to happen.
