Yeah, Suprsingly I like her story more than Carol Danvers (MCU Capt. Marvel) she seems to dislike/grudge on Carol too after what happened after the snap. I think their relationship is strained because Carol was too busy saving other worlds when the Avengers are trying to stop Thanos from killing half of the Universe Monica knew that Carol could have been in Infinity War to prevent the snap so that she can say goodbye to her mother.

I think that has more to do with the “GLOBAL WORLD HEALTH CRISIS “ and all comics getting delayed indefinitely in 2020. Comics that had film tie-ins or showcased a new MCU character got so delayed as they are trying to wait and see when MCU films finally get released.

The only real consequence of “Death and Return of Superman” was Coast City being destroyed, causing Hal Jordan to go Crazy setting the stage for Zero Hour. Which would be rendered meaningless by Infinite Crisis anyway

The druid as he pointed out was just transitional like in wrestling where they need to hand the belt over to someone else but they dont wanna make that person weak on the way out. I hated that captain marvel had a short run as leader, like i was really angry when I read the issue she lost her powers in. That said if it had to be someone at least it was cap who lead them the most over the comics in avengers.

I wish they kept Maria alive to help guide Monica and be there for her. It sucks that they always kill off heroes' parents for "development" or some tragic backstory, and it would have been refreshing to have this very resilient, powerful hero that still relies on her mama for advice, reassurance, and emotional support from time to time. Nearly all heroes have dead or MIA parents and its cliche and tiring as hell

It's kind of interesting to see how she was the leader of the Avengers as a Black Woman with Natural Hair and had to be de - powered to be replaced by America.... and then had to give up her name to some other dude multiple times because reasons.... Seems a bit too much like real life for comics.

@@AspiePilo82 You are correct. We shouldn't talk about how bad David Hasselhoff's rendition of Fury was. It's one thing to re-write a character completely. It's another to strip away a character in order to boost some other narrative. Just to be clear I didn't like the Idea of Jane Foster becoming Thor either. The hammers blessing was that those who were worthy to lift it would have the powers of... not become Thor. To me that is along the same lines. Depower her for your story but to strip her identity multiple times and then relax her hair to make her more mainstream says a lot. But I guess that Idea makes you uncomfortable.

The actress pulled off an appealing personality. If the voice actor for an AI in 2008 could get this much love, I am sure a Photon movie is possible and could be successful

Thanks for mentioning the hair thing. That's a bigger deal than people know. There's still certain schools in America that have sent girls home for braids, and other traditional hairstyles plus some jobs forcing pressed hair. I love Monica's hair in Wandavision, it's something about it that adds to her character.

@@marlygee Yes on discrimination but not really specific to hair ethnically as far as I know. Maybe in some places. Little small town places are usually where the stories come from and go viral if it gets exposed. It takes pressure from people for them stop or undo a suspension or whatever. So shout to those who use their voice in these situations. Job wise I think it's illegal but wearing natural hair can be frowned upon in some places. Depends on the job, or the style.

When I was watching WandaVision I actually commented specifically about how great her hair is and I didn't know about any of this controversy. The hair was definitely an important part of it.

... Wow Marvel has a nasty habit of SERIOUSLY disrespecting this interesting character. I liked her in Wandavision already but now I'm sincerely hoping she sticks around and becomes a popular superhero. Make her an A-lister like Iron Man, Captain America, Spiderman.

It baffles me why the MCU didn’t have Monica instead of Carol? For starters she’s a cop and had a unique power set. And secondly she’s a good character who happens to be black. Heck marvel could have had the 90s aesthetic by having her movie be a 90s buddy cop movie set in New Orleans.

@@SteelSpurs Agreed. Carol Danvers I argue has only ever been decent with Claremont and Brian Reed. Sue Deconnick tarnished her and Marvel has been desperate to make her center of the universe. Instead why not utilize Monica? Heck Iron Man,Cap etc where B to C tiered characters but they became megastars thanks to their movies. Why not Monica? Heck her perspective as a police officer could have been well handled as it would have added some nice diversity with regards to career and perspective. Also her powers are dope. You can do a lot with them.

I hope she gets a larger role in the MCU. Up to Episode 5 of WandaVision, and she's clearly shown to be an intelligent, sympathetic woman. The way she handles Wanda's threat with compassion where her higher ups would rather take a more final approach has me anticipating a conflict of interests within S.W.O.R.D. soon. The character of Monica is only making it better.

Spectrum is the most appropriate alias for her powers tbh... I believe I remember spectrum from as a teen but I might be confusing her with another spectrum 🤷🏿‍♀️

Her story is so heartbreaking. I’d never heard of her until WandaVision, yet she’s immensely powerful and was so well liked. It really hurts that racism and sexism cast her into the shadows to be whitewashed by Cpt America... And then numerous other characters taking and ripping her very identity. Then on top of that they made her character suffer such vile and traumatic fates... The intention was clear from the start and I’m proud of her creator for calling it out and standing by her.

I've never heard of Monica flambeau until the beginning of this year. I watched another youtuber who did a depth analysis on Monica background. I also read about nubia, wonder woman sister who is stronger and more skilled fighter than wonder woman. I have never seen any of WW or the captain marvel movies...I am not sure I will watch any of them.

I’ve always been interested in this version of captain marvel and I’m glad she is getting attention again.

Monica seems legitimately good for most of her history, only ever being brought down by being shunted to lesser teams for no reason.

Its crazy how much hate and racism there is towards black (woman) and it shows through a ‘comic Book character. Like having Monica’s name and history be stripped off. And the way the editor wanted to write her off says alot! And ppl keep yell about race card being pulled. I love monica and she one of my favorite Heroes!! I would love to see more of het in any marvel project animation or mcu!!

This Incarnation of Ultimates is one of my favorite teams ever. I will point out that Monica has been showing up off and on in Carol's book for a bit, which is better than nothing. Still, she deserves her own ongoing.

I really think this was one of your best videos so far! I love when you go beyond just talking about the character(s)/event the video is about and also shine a light on previous bad practices of comic book creators. I remember Next Wave it was so great. By the way the scene where marvel calls out the stuff with Monica's hair while very funny still didn't change the fact that her redesign was handled poorly. She was still awesome in that run of Mighty Avengers though.

This makes me upset because I was so excited seeing Monica in the mcu but seeing all the horrible treatment she got in the comics and the way the mcu already stripped her amazing parents makes me worried

I love the nextwave books. I always thought they were fun. Also, I don’t think you give Triathlon enough credit. He also has the power to detect skrulls and he has an interesting story during the Secret Invasion event that was important to the event.

She's such an awesome character, I already loved her in Wandavision but this with her comic powers and origin story will make her so much better. I hope Marvel cinematic universe gives her the justice she deserves.

I wonder how the MCU is gonna give Monica her powers? She could get them in from Wanda's bubble, I think they hinted at something being off about her in episode 5. That could be a hint?

Yep. The excessive radiation, combined with Wanda "warping" her repeatedly (likely making her molecules scramble), and finally flinging her back through the barrier with her "protective spell" keeping Monica safe, seems to be the start of her getting her powers. At least, based on episode 6. Could be still be more to come though! :)

It was so cool to learn that a black woman was the leader of such a prolific superhero team in an era where black people and women were so mistreated by society at large. (They still are, very much, but you know what I mean)

@@Hey-Its-Dingo Well, she was unfairly shafted from that role by the editor at the time and the writer was fired for trying to defend her leadership role. But aside from that, I also hope she gets to become a big part of the Avengers. The comics version of Monica would finally get the justice she deserves.

@@Hey-Its-Dingo She seems like a natural fit to be the Avengers leader, considering she already was in the 80s for a few years and is also the leader of Sword, or atleast her mother was.

Wow, I can't believe that the first character to hold the Captain Marvel title was a black woman. You'd normally expect her to be a younger character who was only created once soicety became more progressive, creators more diverse, and representation a virtue.

She wasn't. The original Capt Marvel wasva Kree male. Mar-Vell. He died of cancer.

@@jaedynnmartinez1362 I've been reading comics since the late 70's Mar-Vell held the title of Captain Marvel before any of them did. I have actual autographed comics signed by Jim Starlin sitting in my storage. Monica came after him. So if YOU could actually do the research you'd see it. A little more history for you. Carol Danvers was Ms Marvel. Then Rouge took her powers. She became Binary. Then eventually and currently Captain Marvel. Monica changed and became/Photon/Spectrum. Once again, I have the comics themselves. Stop relying on Wikipedia to do your "research".

Especially since after ep 5 of WandaVision all I want now is to watch a movie with Monica as the central character.

A lot of people are hating on Monica and calling her character boring. Marvel fans are so toxic, honestly they always hate on the black characters. Let’s not forget how bad they talked about Black Panther (saying the whole movie wasn’t that good) like bitch it’s top 5 out of 23.

Wow, I had heard of Spectrum and Photon, but somehow I hadn't connected them to Monica Rambeau. I'm kind of glad I didn't, because it means her getting her powers in WandaVision was a total surprise to me. I'm really looking forward to what they do with this character, and I'm so glad they've represented her well so far!

Kinda seems like they just gave Carol her powers which kinda sucks. Hopefully they can make Monica cool on her own without overlapping or overshadowing Carol.

Honestly Drake, thank you for this video. I never knew Monica was this interesting, I only ever knew about Monica as Spectrum and vaguely knew that she was a previous Captain Marvel and Photon. This video makes me love her so much more

Monica Rambeau and Adam Brashear alias Blue Marvel should be the new power couple of Marvel comics.

Thanks for this review of the history of Monica Rambeau. You did a great job! I actually had that issue she first appeared in and was a big fan from the start! There weren’t a lot of black women super heroes in those days, it was pretty much Storm and Misty Knight. It was awesome having another character to root for, especially one so powerful. I stopped reading Avengers for awhile after they did Monica dirty. 😒 I also felt some type of way when they made Monica a child in MCU Captain Marvel. I mean, I get it, that’s how old she would’ve been in order to be an adult now but as a comic fan I knew she was Captain Marvel before Carol Danvers and it kind of bugged me a little. At least she’s here now and she may be getting her powers.
