    IMe too but this episode made me think of the next couple lines of Erskine's speech: "This is why you were chosen. Because the strong man who has known power all his life, may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows... compassion." I mentioned this in another thread but Steve was a terrible soldier. Walker, on the other hand, never really lost or struggled before and his inexperience in facing setbacks was his downfall.

    I love the parallel of Sam's Cap vs. Walker's Cap in this episode. During the negotiation scene with Karli, John says to Bucky that Sam's diplomacy wouldn't work and Bucky'll have Sam's blood on his hands. However, it's Walker's violent approach that doesn't work out and he's the one with his friend's blood on his hands.

    Actually John was somewhat right. Remember John worked in hostage rescue. Inaction can cause lives. He’s so inpatient because he’s use to missions where runs in hard and fast. He wasn’t inpatient he was worried for Sam, being alone. When Walker and Hoskins were searching Hoskins walked into a room by himself and that caused him to die. All of Walkers fears came true which made him somewhat right.

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@undeadgames309 I actually genuinely understand and agree with John's intentions in this episode, but never their execution. Was a direct physical confrontation one of the methods to deal with Karli? Yes! But only Zemo was the one to execute it correctly. He didn't barge in through the doors as John, alerting his enemy (and possibly putting his teammates in danger), but rather crept in on her and delivered a silent shot. I doubt that John was right in loudly barging in on Karli if you consider Sam as a hostage in this case - if Karli's intentions were more serious, such violence escalation could've gotten Sam killed. That's what makes the situation different from the one with Hoskins - Sam was there to negotiate and he made his intentions clear. Hoskins and Walker in the later scene were there clearly to kill Flagsmashers. In fact, I personally believe that the reason Walker and Hoskins got separated is that Flagsmashers didn't want Hoskins dead, so they immobilized Hoskins for him not to become collateral damage (which he, unfortunately, did in the end). It doesn't mean I support Flagsmashers in general, but I still think that as a group they have certain moral boundaries (far more strict than Karli herself).

  • @aless.andra9620

    @aless.andra9620

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Priceluked I think it was implied in Walker/Hoskins conversation in that episode - Hoskins was complimenting John on his past actions, and John seemed very conflicted in that moment - I don't think he was confident and proud of the decisions he had to make, and he never unpacked and dealt with it in a constructive manner (such as therapy or counseling). It might have been whether because of outside influence - him being praised for his actions without a room to unpack them; or for internal reasons- he mocked Sam for his role as a counselor, implying that he doesn't take counseling seriously and considers it as something for weak people - which he doesn't see himself as, therefore not allowing himself to reflect on and process his past experiences.

    @@aless.andra9620 I 100% agree with your assertion on Walker's actions. People dislike him so much for him being given the shield, they don't allow themselves to even try to see Walker's perspective. He and Karli are very similar in the sense that you can understand they motivations but their execution is terrible. Also agree with Zemo: he understands how to approach this type of situation. Based on what we've seen, John is fighting both issues of inadequacy and PTSD; combine that with the serum and he becomes a different person. Doesn't absolve him of his actions at all but it makes it understandable.

    One thing I love about the Sam/Bucky dynamic is that despite how hard they are on each other, and how they act like they dgaf, they know they can always trust the other to be there for the other and do the right thing. I also like the way they’ll ask each other “are you okay?” when something happens and they know it’s triggering for the other and keep each other in check, like when Sam tells Bucky not to engage with Zemo. This episode did a good job showing that and their evolution as a team.

The serum amplified his good intentions, but it also amplified his anger. Which gives birth to the US Agent. Walker is a good guy he does the right things he seeks justice it's just that he does all of that without an ethical code. Meaning he kills the bad guys, which isn't always the solution, that is the difference between a Hero and an Anti Hero. John Walker is an Anti Hero

    That's why you only give the serum to "good people" like Doctor Erskine said. Karli Morgenthau took it and went from having fair ideas based on revenge to being an extremist. You give it to John Walker, who is actually a good soldier (that would do everything that's need to be done to complete the mission) and that's what happens. Lemar was his conscience, with him gone, added to the rage of seeing him die, John Walker has nobody to tell him that's not the way to do things. That's why Steve said Sam "You're a good man" when he gave him the shield. Because that's what he wanted for the next Cap. A good man.

    Walker and T'Challa mirror each other. Both had big shoes to fill. Both lost a loved one by the hands of an extremist. Both felt the insatiable need to get revenge. The major difference, and the defining line of character, is that one learned how to navigate through their grief-induced bloodlust (even if justified). And so far, other has succumbed to it.

    Owww Agustin, you are breaking my heart with the turkish delight comment hahah! I promise we do have really good ones! Joking aside, thank you guys for giving us this reaction so fast. It is "delightful" to get your insights and commentary on such an intense and heavy episode with such topical themes! It both requires and brings a completely different perspective when compared with the themes of WandaVision. But that is what I am enjoying with these shows so far - exploration of different themes, in-depth character moments and world-building. Thanks again for the video!

    The ending of the episode made me realize how each character surrounding the Captain America mantle can represent a variety of attitudes towards the US as a country: -Steve is what the US told the world it was (particularly post-WWII) = strong, righteous ideals of freedom and democracy -John is what people at the receiving end of US-imperialism might see (notably with "The War on Terror") = those very ideals stained by the blood of innocents caught in the cross-fire, shattering belief and trust in what once was an aspirational symbol -Sam is the modern day American trying their best to ensure that they live up to those ideals in full and make up for those broken promises which are symbolized by Isaiah's ordeals and struggles I like that the events of this episode are probably what makes Sam realize that he is the only one right now who should have the shield. Even if he doesn't necessarily feel comfortable with it, even if he was put in a shitty position to be the follow-up to John Walker, he has to trust in Steve's decision and he has to trust in himself to do right by the legacy of the shield. While the conversation with Karli at the funeral really showed why Sam is a worthy successor to Steve, I think it also showed how Sam might be more flexible than Steve in certain respects. Steve might have just told Karli: "I disagree with you, you're wrong, here's why and you need to stand down". Whereas Sam went out of his way to let Karli know that while he ultimately disagreed with her methods, he understood where she was coming from.

    I got the sense that John was hallucinating a bit (the one fight where he throws the shield into the wall, the guy he was fighting just vanishes and he looks around confused). So my initial thought was that Lemar might have still been alive but John (being the only one to check him) couldn't find the pulse or breath that might have still been there. But with Bucky and Sam exiting the building and the way it ended, I don't think that's the case.

    The serum amplifies everything that is inside, so good becomes great; bad becomes worse. This is why you were chosen. Because the strong man who has known power all his life, may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows... compassion. This Dr Abraham Erskine quote becomes quite apt now.

    While I don't really emphatize with John Walker (except for what happened with Hoskins) as he just approaches everything in the extreme (& not in a good way), I also doesn't think of him as a bad person. It's evident that he's got trauma for what he's done to earn his medals, but he's also got recently pent up anger & envy for power. So the serum just amplifies those. He might pull back & be the anti-hero he is in the comics. But he certainly tarnished Steve's legacy by what he did.
