Fallout 1x1 Reaction: The End

Ойын-сауық

Based on one of the greatest video games of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them above.

Just a little non spoiler background: After WW2 they started using nuclear energy for basically everything (cars, robots, computers, etc) and the transistor was never invented, that's why everything is big and cluncky but semi futuristic. Also only those 3 vaults are connected, every vault has its own unique thing, and there's are least 120 vaults in canon.

Bethesda was heavily involved with the making of this show, and Bethesda's game director, Todd Howard, was an executive producer. They have said this show is canon to the games and takes place 9 years after Fallout 4. (The latest Fallout game in sequence) It's an original story that happens to take place in the Fallout universe. The location of the show is the same as Fallout 1 and 2, but many decades later. So there are references and Easter eggs to those games all throughout the season, without directly crossing over with the stories from those games. Such a great show, enjoy the ride!

The transistor was definitely invented. It's a weirdly prolific misconception, as there's no cited source saying they weren't invented. Transistors are really the only way computers the size of a Pip Boy can work. Technological progress just took a different route. The people in Fallout would claim our nuclear technology is as primitive to them as their computers are to us. The big divergence is just that nuclear energy use skyrocketed, becoming "safe" for consumer use. As opposed to the information and communication boom that happened in real life. Electronics just didn't become miniaturised quickly, so the state of computers in 2077 is like a mash of 60s through 80s era tech.

tbh, Witcher is not game adaptation. Its book adaptation and should be. Its only a shame, that witcher series went with books in S1 and then threw perfect story out of the window in favor of xena warrior princess level of storytelling. Its super disgraceful what they have done to witcher series from script perspective. The story is literally READY to be adapted. There is only stuff they could add on top of it and they left like 10% of original plot and were suprised all the relations between characters soon started to not work like they supposed to. They fumbled it hard and im still fuming over it

The domestic abuse origin for Rule of Thumb is false. In the 1970s some one used the phrase in reference to some old english judges stance on abuse, just using it as a figure of speech, and people thought they were implying that was the origin and that belief just spread. The actual origin was in the 1600s and just meant using your thumb as a ruler, meaning estimating or approximating instead of actually measuring.

The first two Fallout games were developed by a company called Black Isle. Both were isometric CRPGs set in the western US. That company folded leading to Bethesda buying the rights to Fallout. They made Fallout 3 as a First/Third person, open world, action RPG set in the eastern US. People from Black Isle later joined a company called Obsidian and ended up making Fallout New Vegas (yes Hector, it is one of the most beloved of the series). So while Tod Howard's name and the Bethesda logo both appear in the credits, most of the story and lore come from before those folks got involved. Though many of the visual and game play inspired elements are pulled from Fallout 3 and 4. So it's this interesting mixture of things from throughout the history of the games.

I think that this particular game series lends itself well to adaptation because, historically, each game is a new story set within the world of Fallout. Even the dog is not the same dog in every game. The main character is sometimes a recurring character, but is also often a whole new one. So this is just a new story set in the world of Fallout, and the fact that we have new characters with different yet similar backgrounds doesn't change the game that players already know.

It was almost shocking how well they nailed the world and the aesthetic and the tone of the games. It makes me so happy to see a whole new crop of fans coming to the world. The games are such wonderful sci-fi. Its also shameless nostalgia bait for the decade in America where its arguable that we were at our peak in. 50s designs and ideals blast 120 years into the future and nuclear powered, rising cold war tensions and all.

  • @100Companions

    @100Companions

thats one of two possible origins of the phrase, hes actually right that the "rule of thumb" has been used in actual law as the standard to judge if a man was being TOO abusive to his wife by hitting her with a stick that was thicker than his thumb. Its referenced in at least two cases in North Carolina in the USA as a historical legal defense in like 1917 and was attributed to like the 15th century, but most people who study the history of law think it was actually probably invented wholesale in the 19th century to make it seem like male abusers of the past were worse than current male abusers. So its "historical" but just not as old as most people think.

You run for the hills if it's smaller to get away from the rads as much as you can, if it's bigger than it doesn't matter if the blast won't kill you, the rads will

Honcho's dialogue suggests the ghoul may have first been put there by pedro 30 years ago since he threatens him with putting him back so Pedro can keep torturing him for "the next 30 years" which sorta implies he may have been there that long already. Regardless it is likely the ghoul did something to cross pedro and the whole thing was a way to torture/ punish him for it.

As a long time Fallout fan, Hector is so right about fans loving Fallout because of the tone, the world building and the little quirks that make the games what they are - and not necessarily the plot of the game. Of course, the lore is important, but replaying the games has shown me just how much I get absorbed into the world without necessarily getting super invested in the actual plot. Which is why I think this show is so good - they’ve really done so well with just building out the world as it is and incorporating new characters and how they fit into the pre existing canon. Huge fan of the game since the first one in 1998, and "lore" connoisseur here x) The genius of this show is that It manages to take the Fallout lore, tone, dark humour, gore, story style and gameplay mechanics that every fan can find himself in it super easily with TONS of game references BUT those are used in such a good way that anyone not knowing the first single thing about Fallout games or the universe has an easy time understanding what's going on, thanks to great writing. I have LOVED the season (I've watched it all, and I wonder if not releasing it on a weekly basis is a Bethesda request, knowing that Todd Howard (Bethesda director/executive producer, also on the show) wants the games to be enjoyed in full as soon as they possibly can (he was clear on that with the games a few times, he likes it when a Bethesda game is announced and can be played in full as soon as possible after announcement) that's entirely possible. They absolutely nailed it in all aspects, I can't find anything wrong with it outside of a few nit picks that you can very easily pass over. I think that we will start seeing more gaming properties being of high quality because back in the day, adaptations were made by older directors that were doing their 'take' on the property but now we have directors and showrunners that grew up as gamers and want to be more faithful. There are more folks in creative places that grew up with gaming so we are likely to see more accurate shows/movies as they are now made by passionate gamers. With Fallout, they have an even better chance since none of the fallout games are really linked that much except by the universe they are set in so as long as you nail the world, you can tell whatever story you want.

Good reaction it is funny that you guys are all over the place lol. Hopefully no one puts any spoilers in. But for the world building everything‘s actually in the future compared to us it’s just an alar timeline where no microchips were built. It’s still tube based like in the 50s. But the future lol.

i've played a lot of the games and this series does such a good job in the world building, and give us a lot of easter eggs, not to be overwhelmed, but just enough. Also, you'll see that everything in this world, is grey, there is no good or bad, nor right or wrong

I think this is one of the best ways to do a video game movie/show, have it set within the video game canon but not be the story of one of the games. Have it be its own story written within the grander story. World of Warcraft would do so well as a series like this with this much love put into it. So far they are really nailing the vibe of Fallout.

Dark grotesque humor is very much integral part of every fallout game. Weapons like one you saw in the end of this ep is the one that shoots random garbage you have in inventory at high velocity - hence you can blow up enemies heads with doll, teddy bear parts in the rythm of 50s joyful music playing the radio. Thats the fallout vibe xD

👍🏻🚀☢️ I actually love that y'all are fresh to the Fallout universe! I've been playing since the original Fallout by Tim Cain in the late 90s, then Fallout 2. Such incredible RPG gameplay, story, and world building. Was so excited when Fallout 3 finally came out, then even more for New Vegas and Fallout 4, which I still replay frequently. Hope you love it! I've seen the whole show, and they've just done an amazing job being true to the spirit, tone, and lore. Tim Cain approves! And so does this Fallout megafan. (P.s. Anyone looking to get into the lore should check out the longplays by Oxhorn on YT, he does all the games!)

This show is so.... just... perfect. lol They take so much time and effort in setting up the environment and the world and the characters, the story almost doesn't even matter. Which makes it even better that the story is really well done too. It nails the tone of the games, hints at a lot of the various aspects of actually *playing* the game, the SOUND EFFECTS, the MUSIC, the HUMOR. Every brand shown... is from the games. Every magazine title in the background, every poster or weapon hanging on a wall... it would honestly be easier for me to list what's NOT from the games. The amount of detail is ASTOUNDING. And even the parts that make you go "Hhmmm... wait, how's that work?" can be hand-waved away as 'videogame logic' and becomes a minor meta commentary on how silly it is to be able to jab a tiny needle into your wound and get healed immediately. They just... do... everything. so. perfectly.
