The Failure of Blumhouse's NIGHT SWIM (Explored)

Ойын-сауық

January is often a graveyard shift for movies, a time when studios release films they have no confidence in. Yet, in this cinematic wasteland, some horror films have consistently found fertile ground. The trend has given rise to many high-concept thrillers that began their years with a bang.
The previous year's horror-comedy 'M3GAN' set a high bar, and it was with a mix of skepticism and hope that I approached Blumhouse's latest offering, 'Night Swim,' directed and written by Bryce McGuire. The film's quirky premise of an evil swimming pool suggested potential for at least a few laughs if not outright terror. Unfortunately, it proves to be a disappointing addition to the genre, merely paddling in the shallow end of creativity.
The movie features Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon playing Ray and Eve Waller, who, along with their two children Elliot and Izzy move to a suburban home seeking a new start. Ray, a former Major League Baseball player, is grappling with Multiple Sclerosis, a condition that ended his career but brought him closer to his family. While Eve, a school administrator and former Navy brat is determined to establish a safe and normal life amidst the challenging circumstances.
However, their idyllic family existence soon becomes disrupted by eerie experiences around their new in-ground pool, where each family member encounters mysterious and sometimes menacing visions. Despite the promising setup and solid performances from the leads, McGuire's adaptation, an evolution of the short film he originally developed with Rod Blackhurst in 2014 is disappointing.

Here's the thing, between the 70s and 80s we used up all the good horror ideas, Jason Voorhees and his mommy issues, A nightmare on elm Street or what to do with minor attracted persons (Freddy's a kiddy diddler and murderer and is rightfully burned alive), Micheal Myers pre geriatric rampage, the exorcist minus the patriarchy references to two men saving a life where one dies in the process, and alien before ridley Scott decided to work on the really big questions and provide answers to none of them

This worked as the short film or that one Are You Afraid of the Dark episode. As a story goes though there just isn’t enough for a feature length movie. Also, it makes me think of that youtube sketch, Shark Pool. Where there’s a shark in the pool at a classic late teen party, killing the kids. There’s one logical character that’s like, “just don’t get in the pool!”

It's funny that you pointed out how the story seemed to be made up on the fly. I've been watching old episodes of Face Off, and he was one of the directors from the season finale and I noticed how he constantly had these big ideas and was changing his mind on how he wanted things to look for just a 2 minute short film. I can't imagine what having someone with no clear vision or a constantly changing one would be like for a feature film.

By the sounds of it, if they had learnt into the esoteric horror of something like SCP-2316 (you do not recognize the bodies in the water) have the spirit operate more like a general mental infection, it might have been a better story. Maybe have the pool be its source but after it gets awakened it goes on to infect/hunt the entire suburb, anywhere that draws water from the spring. But do understand that would ballon the budget dramatically of a small horror film to focus on one house/family to go to a whole neighborhood.

I haven't seen this movie myself, but I would compare it to Oculus (2014), a strange haunted inanimate object that terrorizes an unwitting family. But were Oculus succeeded Night Swim failed. The biggest difference that I see is the mystery surrounding the "haunted" object. In Oculus, the mirror's history is explored, but its power is never explained which forces your mind to explore and try to explain it. The unknown is the most terrifying thing, i.e. why most people are afraid of the dark. But this movie tried to use a weak explanation and shifting the power between the pool, the pool water, and just water in general. Studios need to stop grabbing up great horror shorts, this movie, Lights Out, Smile, etc. What makes these short so terrifying is the quick pace and unexplained entity, but when you flush it out to a full length feature they fall flat.

Horror movies tend to be garbage. Night Swim isn’t garbage, it’s mediocre. It was predictable, but the acting was decent in my opinion, and I liked the message and theme of the story.

The cat would have made more sense if it was not killed but stolen along with the other victims and all only get returned when a true sacrifice is made. The ghosts they showed should have been though past sacrifices.

the cat dying made me really mad, it was obviously just there for cheap shock factor to make the pool seem evil and scary.

I agree there is a lot of things they could have done better with this movie like it would have been cooler if the water from the pool and magic springs could make the family do things that they would not think of or be capable of like sleep walk if the pool could possess them from anywhere from the sink to the shower and bathtub and the pool is well it could do anything like sleep walk stealing each other stuff and do all sorts of stuff like what happened to the family in that 1 thriller called dark skies if you remember that movie it was a thriller in theaters back in 2013. So the interesting thing is they could have had this thriller go all sorts of ways from the a cursed swimming pool or a pool having a mind of its own like it did in the actual movie or they could have had the pool haunted like this either someone died in the Poole and is a lost a soul like a child for example since that is what they had in one of the ghost whisper episodes or somone was murdered in the pool and never left that was a torment it's so bothering anyone who goes swimming in the pool or moved into the house or trying to help them explain their death so they could rest in peace or tell them who killed them where the person could have not just been murder in the pool but also he or she got their killer drowned the pool too making the pool haunted by a good ghost and an evil ghost or the Pole did not have to be haunted at all they could have just had a killer sneaking to the poor at night killing people even though I don't find that interesting I would've gone for a haunted pool anyday in fact this thriller gives me an idea for this book I'm writing called the Waterman about a entity made out of water I have not thought about which direction I want the story to go but maybe this horror movie about a haunted swimming pool could help give me inspiration.

Some short stories and short films need to stay in short form. Drawing them out requires more explanation and the terror in short form is lost in long form and this film is a perfect example of why and how the short works and why the film does not.
