    What I wholeheartedly love about the "52-scene": The self-sacrifice of the Belters for the survival of other totally normal people truely contradicts Captain Martens' demand for sacrifice one episode before. Before the end of 2x10 Bobbie would have died for the dream of Mars, but then she recognizes that her mind was just influenced by a totalitarian government that would do anything to get more power, even victimize and sacrifice their own people. In contrast to that, the Belters wanted to live and were really angry about Naomi at first. But after they realised that only a few can survive they become brave and compassionate - and they don't need any government that says what it's worth dying for.

    Okay, this episode, when Chrisjen and crew get to Mao's ship and the guy offers them cucumber sandwiches keep your eyes on Bobbie...her expression when she bites the sandwiches is golden, watch how she starts stacking them up to make sure she gets enough... then watch her expression when Chrisjen says "get to the fucking point" lol It's one of those little moments you don't pay attention to the first time you watch it because your focus is on Chrisjen!

    Yes, it's one of most hilarious and favorite moments of the show. By the way, clever nice touch of authors. Cucumbers wouldn't be really attractive for agriculture of terraforming Mars considering ratio "cost/amount of demanded water/nutrition", so our mundane vegetable is something exotic or even sci-fi for native Martian like Bobby.

    I love that scene where the Belters have to line up to get on the Somnambulist. And the mini stories the show managed to tell in that scene. The small boy running back to his mom and getting on the ship together with her doomed that last woman. The woman entering the ship while looking back at a man (perhaps her son) in the last line, him waving to her like "go on, I'm right behind you", then the look on his face when he's stopped.

    I think Errinwright’s initial cooperation with Chrisjen were genuine: to him, it was the best option for Earth at the time. Unfortunately his preferred version of ‘best’ is that Mars must be beaten, and Chrisjen telling him about the planned meeting with Mao gave him the opportunity to change his objectives accordingly.

    Lets hear it for Champa (acted by Gugun Deep Singh) a true hero and giant of the Belt and humanity, for saving 52 lives and then sacrificing himself "Everyone single one of you knew, you were certain on the day you were born: Our life is hard....We have to stay back, we have to stay back . So lets be tough and do what needs to be done ." A super powerful tear jerking scene. To me the oppressed Belters are like the Free folk or "wildlings" in GOT, while the protomolecule hybrids are the very scary White walkers...except in this story they are done right.

    Heavy Titanic vibes in this episode. In fact there's a hidden easter egg. If you noticed Melissa's flight jacket, she has Gemini 3 written on the back. Gemini 3 was nicknamed "Molly Brown" as a reference to the famous survivor of the Titanic "The Unsinkable Molly Brown". The real story is that Gus Grissom was the commander of Gemini 3 and his previous mission ended with his Mercury capsule sinking, so this was an inside joke at NASA. Gemini 3 would hopefully stay afloat for recovery this time. In this episode, Ganymede is like the Titanic, the Somnambulist is the lifeboat, and Naomi is Molly Brown, who talked the lifeboat captain into going back and picking up additional survivors.

    Actually Alex flies the ship and tells it what needs to be shot. It's the Roci systems that do the actual aiming/shooting, based on what the pilot/gunner (if there's one) tells her to shoot at, and how it needs to be done usually through a script. anti-torpedo shooting is pretty much automatic. Alex didn't truly shoot that torpedo down, he told Roci to take care of it and the Roci shot it down.

    What I absolutely love about the expanse - and it shows through in this episode more than most, is the fact that it shows humanity at its worst - but also at its absolute Best. 52 people saved in the worst situation - because everyone showed the ultimate heroism, giving up their lives so others might live. Naomi willing to give her life making it possible, but each and every belter not getting on doing the same. And Holden continuing his evolution as a commander, having to chose between mission and people, then making the right call, and being as much as a bad ass as Amos or Bobby (in his own why of course)...Alex, "here we go again..."

    This particular episode has me wondering about things on a deeper level. Both Holden and Alex served in the military. One UN, One Martian. I know from personal experience that decision making is different from CO to CO, but I wonder if this is supposed to be some kind of metaphor for how someone from Earth views a situation and someone from Mars...or even maverick vs macgyver. Alex always seems to take the correct realistic route while Holden grows into coming around to that position. Like you said, between mission and people. Alex being from Mars, says a lot that he would represent the view of choosing people coming from a place where people aren't in high number but probably viewed with a greater reverence than someone from Earth might view people vs goal in-work. Or it's just training.

    When she said "we made it do it do what we wanted", she was referring to the protomolecule itself - not the hybrid(s). They CREATED the hybrids by "making" the protomolecule "do what" they "wanted". Eros was the experiment to see how it behaved. The hybrids were an experiment based on what they learned from that (ie 'how it works'). And the crisis on Ganymede -at large- was just the fallout from that experiment (or "field test"). They weren't indiscriminately unleashing it on the population.

    The ABC team (Avasarala, Bobbie, Cotyar) came together on the way to Mao's yacht. Avasalara revealed her fears, Cotyar revealed his guilt, and that cause Bobbie to realize they were the team she needed to be part of. Notice how she threw her own body in front of Avasarala when the guns got pulled. But as much as Avasarala hates space, when she stepped out on Mao's yacht, she had her swagger dialed to 11. The Martian ship Karakoum was the ship Alex heard was landing to pick up the Protomolecule hybrid that the Roci crew released (and then hunted). It was also the karakoum that crashed into the Ganymeded dome (that boom that shook the people). I think Errinwright had already planned to take out the Martian defense minister and the Karakoum to leave Mao no option but to work with earth. It was a desperate plan that may or may not have saved his own career, and he may have been gambling that then Avasrarala would keep quiet about his part in the Protomolecule work (since she was the only other person who knew about it). But for sure, I think Errinwright was smart enough that the moment he heard Avasarala would be off planet and on the same ship as Mao, he began forming his plan to get rid of her as well. Okay, Steven, I was timing your blinks during Scene 52. But you did a man's job of holding back the tears. I've watched that scene a dozen times, but I've never been able to keep them all back. When the Ganymede harbormaster challenged the Somnambulist, did you notice that Naomi was checking on the Protomolecule torpedo she had hidden? Why at that moment? It's hard to imagine that the Belters would acquiesce to counting only 52 to be saved. But remember that Belters always live in the margin of survival. They're always subject to death and always know it. There would have been many, many times that Belters have had to make life-and-death decisions. Every Belter would known those stories, many would have relatives or friends who made those decisions, and some who chose to sacrifice themselves. So they would understand and, once calmed and reminded, get tough and make the same kind of decision when their own time came.

The difference was that Chrisjen was able to see what was happening and change her outlook, while Errinwright never did. What I love most is that no one is doing evil for the sake of evil. You can see what motivates them. Even Daws, as grating as he is sometimes, is honest within his own beliefs.

    ".. I hope that protomolecule monster weapon thing ripped that doctor by half... " hehm...that would be merciful. Holden sent Amos to take care Naomi bcoz he believes that Amos would do anything to do just that. Amos also injured,so he need a rest. And in his mind he is going hunt like Capt Ahab with his Roci and he knew Alex is one of the best pilot there is. Prax is just tag a long baggage🤣🤣. It would going to burden him later. Alex establish himself as one of the best pilot in Scifi more and more. Ultimate pilot is the one that not only have the skill(or just brag about it) but also take care of his charge(vehicle and passangers alike). Alex is that quality personified. Not many pilot can match his quality. So many best moment and scenes, this is one of the best episodes of the series.

About Errinwright, as much as a backstabbing traitor as he is, as soon as he realized Chrisjen and Mao would be together without anyone knowing, he did a excelent move, he saw a opening and he took it, he has the upper hand, he could get rid of both of them and no one would know about it.

    I think maybe Errinwright was planning on killing himself until he talked to Avasarala and found out she was going to meet with Mao. This presented an opportunity for him to turn the situation back into his favor. Kill that martian guy, destroy the martian black op ship sent to pick up the protomolecule hybrids then force Mao to work for him and Earth again while at the same time framing Avasarala as the traitor working with Mao and letting them kill her.

    I think he's completely genuine in the message, like all the most interesting antagonists Errinwright believes his own schtick. So it's not so much presenting an opportunity as him now seeing Chrisjen as a threat to Earth, where before he'd believed they at least shared the same ultimate goal.

    I like to think of it this way: The protomolecule soldier that defeated the UN and Mars marines on Ganymede was 'Phase 1' of a test to showcase its tactical worth and drive up its value. It was, in whatever way they do, given orders and sent after those marines. The one that broke out of its containment cell, when the grenade was tossed back into the room, had not been given any orders yet, so most likely was operating at base level instinct, safety. At this point in the story we arent given the basic driving force that these protomolecule soldiers operate under.

    @@JnEricsonx I meant more that, when sent out against the marine's, it had programmed orders... but when the grenade let it out of the pod/cell they had it in, it was only operating on base instinct at that point. Whether it's the only one of its kind, is unknown at this point.

    I've gotta be honest, I think this is the episode that should have been titled "Windmills" and not S01E07. Holden is on his own personal crusade trying to prevent what has already gotten out, much like Don Quixote riding his horse Rocinante to fight windmills. Neither one of them has resounding success and Holden had to take a long hard look at himself much like Quixote and the Knight of the Mirrors. Still a really powerful episode though.

  • @ranialian8537

    @ranialian8537

    @@anonymes2884 One could still argue he's tilting at windmills despite the monster being real. Even if he were to destroy this one monster, the protomolecule "could be in 50 other places by now". That being said, I agree that obsession is his problem. There's a duality in the actual title that I appreciate. In the literal sense, the Roci is hunting the monster, but at the same time, Holden is losing himself in the hunt. "It's not the protomolecule, it's Protogen and men like you"

  • @anonymes2884

    @anonymes2884

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ranialian8537 "Tilting at windmills" means fighting an imaginary enemy (Don Quixote imagined he was attacking giants when in fact they were just windmills) so for me it doesn't fit Holden. I guess there's arguably a sense in which it also means "a futile undertaking" but only because fighting an imaginary enemy is, by definition, futile - you can't defeat what isn't there. Holden's enemy isn't imaginary and his quest to destroy the protomolecule can _in principle_ be completed, even if _we_ know it's a fool's errand in practice. Maybe the consensus on the phrase's meaning is changing though. Language being fluid and ever evolving, the line between a definition being wrong and it just being the _new_ (or alternate) definition can be blurry. Slightly ironically though i'd say Holden's actions _could_ be described as "quixotic" (i.e. often rashly undertaken, doomed to failure and based more on lofty ideals than reality). But even that has a tinge of nobility (albeit misguided) and I don't think Holden is acting out of nobility at that point. Ahab just fits better IMO.

    Errinwright had a plan, and sometimes plans come together, and sometimes, they go way, way south. So before he executed his plan, he made sure to put his affairs in order, including the heart-to-heart with his oldest, the letter to his youngest, and passing along his medals to his mentor to give to his kids after he was sent to prison. Crisjen meeting with JPM off-world was an unexpected but easily-incorporated bonus. The Poison. What? Poison a bottle of 107 year-old scotch? Sacrilege! "No, Pyotr. It was 186 minutes ago." He holds up the concert program, then explains that the toxin could be absorbed through the skin. Martian music might not be much to write home about, but Earth music is nothing short of killer.
