This episode stands as one of the best of the series. Errinwright's flip of the script and Scene 52 will stand out for years to come. Scene 52 always makes me cry, and I'm an old man. Belters constantly live on the edge of catastrophe. I would expect every Belter knows someone or of someone who has had to make the cold calculations of who will live and who will die in various situations. They just had to realize that for them, that was this moment. As the Somnambulist was lifting from the the surface and was being challenged by the Martians, Naomi was checking out her hidden Protomolecule torpedo.

Holden logic was surprisingly on point.. once the Sonambulist had a frigate for escort anyone trying to shot them down would need a quite large amount of missiles as the Corvette class can handle quite a lot of incoming missiles .. such exchange would be too unwise if you are standing off with another big fleet as it would deplete your ammo or even tell them you are now lower than them... in that case if that ship is fliping you off while getting away from you the best would be let them go and someone else handle them if the MCRN wants..we have bigger problems now and are not gonna launch half our arsenal with the UNN Fleet staring at us right there... Having said that whoever was in command of the Valkyrie was a massive dickhead firing a missile at a ship presumibly filled with refugees surrendering..it was like "hey .. free kill!"

On occasion they get to do group yells (like "Beltalowda!") but if they get speaking parts, they are cast members and get a pay upgrade. "Champa" was cast via recommendation and/or audition. Extras generally get a 'cattle call' and the background casting director (at most) just chooses them based on their profiles. They only have to meet a certain visual requirement and, y'know, be able to be normal for the scene. They aren't given lines. There are 3720 union rules distinguishing between background and cast members. (Minor exaggeration.)

I've actually been to a pizza party where there was one pizza per person. The pizza was terrible because the hosts were self-described "foodies" who ordered from some bizarre place with the strangest ingredients I have ever seen on a pizza. The pizzas were also poorly cooked. I choked down a slice of one of the pizzas, and then choked down a slice of a different one hoping it would be better but it was even worse. The hosts seemed happy that there was so much leftovers, so I guess it worked out for them that no one really wanted to eat any of it. There was wine that was decent, but the liquor on offer was the kind that a only a high schooler would buy (pay somebody to buy for them) which was kind of amusing since everyone there was in their 30s. I have avoided being their guest again ever since. Still, it was a pizza party, because there was pizza, technically, and a gathering of people. Just not a very good one. I'd rather split a single pizza between 8 people if the pizza is good, than have an overabundance of whatever that shit was.

Man, I was looking forward to your reaction to that final scene, from the beginning of this reaction. :) And, does this show do awesome things with single-appearance secondary characters, or what? 8| You had the Earther Bobbie met; and Prax's friend, Janice; and then this Belter. Others come and go, as well, and a bunch are equally memorable. While technological advancement does come through military research, it's far from the "best." Most military research goes to produce things that sit in a hole in the ground on some military base somewhere, and never get used. So, the economic boost comes from the initial research, and the materials and jobs from the production run, and *maybe* from some spinoff applications and arms sales when the thing gets declassified in 20 years. However, for the most part, military research gets spent on things that, once produced, disappear from the economy because they sit in a warehouse, somewhere. By comparison, non-military scientific research -- especially targeted toward the achievement of a goal that's possible, but *very* difficult, results in innovations that fuel the entire economy. They're never classified, which means everybody knows how the nifty new widget work, and that causes people to spin off ideas from them without any need for government spending. Of all the funds spent on U.S. government research programs, NASA spending has -- far and away -- the best return on the investment (ROI), dollar for dollar. Nothing else really even comes close. The things that DARPA comes up with that eventually do find civilian applications are pretty cool, or even life-changing (the Internet...), but the delay in the time to market until the widget or system gets declassified dampens the ROI pretty seriously, most of the time. (Of course, none of that even begins to compare to the benefits of the Interstate Highway system -- the gift that keeps on freakin' giving -- but nothing beats long strips of concrete and asphalt, for sheer everyday practicality....) Fun reaction. I look forward to the next one. :)

The cucumbers are a nod towards the books. Martian society is built on efficiency since they need to import all their material for the terraforming project. Cucumbers notoriously take a disgusting amount of water to cultivate, so it has to be shipped directly from Earth making it an extreme luxury item (kinda like Truffles here). So for a grunt like Gunny, it's something she'd never taste, which is why she was all over that plate. Kind of irrelevant but funny callback.

Just curious. Why do people simply assume the remnants outside of the 52 died on Ganymede? Whether they, or some of them, managed to find a way to survive doesn't diminish their commitment to sacrifice themselves for the good of the 52, but I don't recall seeing any bodies.

@@thomasmain5986 I have similar thoughts ( heres one: "52" was a ROUGH snd very CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE. And since Chompa specified "women and children first" that ESTIMATE could EASILY have then been pushed up to at least 60 (women ans children requiring less air than the average) so there'd have been MORE THAN ENOUGH air for him to have stepped in as well...) @@snarflcat6187 They said 52, "not counting the crew". So actually you're wrong. They over-predicted it somewhat. Also it's bizarre how you're assuming that "man" is considered average in a futuristic world. What makes you think the initial estimate is based on the oxygen requirements of healthy men only? There probably aren't many full-lung-capacity men, like Amos, in space. They'll all be Belter men and women.

Disagree. This happens at the perfect time in the series, story-wise. This is right after most Reactors comment on Holden being a weak, indecisive, somewhat "just along for the ride" or sometimes "a weak leader." Remember Expanse was originally an RPG. Holden is the "Paladin" character type. But, recently until this episode he'd been experiencing a bit of a character crisis as to which TYPE of Paladin he'd turn into. Wishy-washy in many ways, a captain that takes votes among his crew instead of being decisive, refuses to pick a side in the brewing war, and who allows Amos to go off his leash with no restraint or consequences (which even disturbed Naomi). Will Holden be the decisively war-minded type of Paladin...or the kind that chivalrously defends the downtrodden and disempowered at all cost? In this episode Holden has his "decent into darkness" momentarily trying on the Paladin war-aspect...but the call of family (and refugees) in need finally decides his ultimate path for him. They chose the perfect moment in the storyline to have Holden "man-up" or perhaps "captain-up," or "paladin-up."

The hubris of not knowing what the protomocule really is, what it really does, knowing other evil humans were fucking with it and affecting it but not changing his approach to it, just full on determined thru it all somehow alway to blow it up/kill it. Yeah, if the Blockade wasn't there they could have gotten a few more off, but the Roci doesn't have scrubbers enough and so-on that it could sustain more than maybe at best 20-30 more which would be great but also not everyone. Because of the risk of returning it was likely better to just get out and make the best of it.

This episode was really dumb and nerve wrecking. Suprised to see so much praise over probably the most meaningless decisions all pilled up in one episode and as usual saved by the plot. Oh there's air for only 52 people out of over 300 but let me (Naomi) be suicidal and open the door to everyone and tell them to die out of the goodness of there hearts. Just beautiful to see able-bodied men get bossed around by one macho dude and all of them just happily comply for no reason wse. When in fact panic and desperation should have made them tear down the ship. Poorly scripted and just dumb!
