Something that I think you may have missed(apologies if you didn't!): the ship that Ashford shot down in the middle of the episode wasn't just trying to go to the ring, it was a ship trying to take advantage of the defenseless ships lined up and waiting to enter the rings. When that scene opens up you hear them target a UN freighter to force them to drop their cargo. And then Ashford steps in and calls them "pirata," or pirate. Nothing you said is wrong, though. Everything still totally applies.

Plus, it also needs to be emphasized that life in the Belt is brutally hard; Ganymede was the single largest source of food for the Belt, and it won't be anywhere remotely close to operating capacity any time soon. Oxygen is expensive, water is expensive, food is now astronomically expensive. To have potentially 1300+ worlds just sitting there with the UN and Mars slowly putting together colonization ships with plentiful supplies (in addition to the Belters who have scraped together the same) is driving a lot of people to desperation and extreme tactics, such as piracy.

The show and books draw quite a bit from American history. The rush for the gate-worlds is basically the opening up of the western frontiers, as Holden said. Settlers were often poor and desperately seeking a new life and new opportunities. Many of them had to break the law to chase that new life, like the Belter ships running the gate blockade. Bobbie's situation is what many soldiers went through after WWII ended. Soldiers were discharged en masse, since there wasn't as much need for their services after the Axis powers surrendered. Transitioning back to civilian life was hard, and many veterans went unemployed, depressed, abused, and ignored by society at large. Just goes to show, that if you want to write stories of your own, history is your richest source for inspiration.

Habitable doesn't necessarily mean inhabited. But each of these systems are linked to by a ring built by the Protomolecule, and we already know how the Protomolecule does business. It seeks out worlds with life and uses it to do The Work. So if there was life there before, then the conditions probably exist somewhere in each system to support life again.

Ashford was playing police. He was shooting down belter pirates. Which is ironic as he was one for so long... and also fitting with his new stance that the belt needs to be taken seriously, as a nation of laws. There are tons of colonists from all 3 factions waiting in space by the ring for the go ahead. And pirates have been stealing from them. So Ashfords job is policing activity that 10 years ago he would have been doing. He change as a character is interesting... would love a book about young Ashford. lol

@@pamelahofman1785 That is a good point. I guess part of me hopes with Abraham and Franck involved with the show direction. Perhaps they at some point might go back and give us some backstories for a few characters that got shorted when they wrote the books. I love how they expanded Ashford in the show. Made him a hell of a lot more interesting without really changing the over all story. Just added some dimension. I don't know I would love a story 20 years before the events of the first book with a young Pirate Ashford perhaps somehow being involved somehow in the events of the initial finding of the proto molecule or something. Nothing that changes the books at all... just a wink and a nod that doesn't effect the new story or the old one. Space pirates are always fun material. lol

It played out almost exactly how it did in the show. It was soooo much fun. I was supposed to stick with the UN but I sided with the Belters (OF COURSE). Funny thing about Avasarala, when she was first introduced in the books she was foul mouthed to hell and back like you saw in this first episode. The first few seasons they had to really pull back on her attitude because it was on cable, you can't be saying F you on the SYFY channel. Season 4 however, was produced and aired on Amazon Prime, so they were finally able to allow Avasarala to act more like her book counterpart.

Although it has been mentioned many times in the first three seasons that pirate ships patrol The Belt (and factions of pirates with armed ships presumably are the main factions of a very politically splintered Belt), this is the first time you actually get to see Belter pirates in action. They do what pirates do: waylay ships and threaten to kill everybody on them if they don't stand down and surrender their cargo. With Belters always short of everything, it is pretty easy for the pirates to view themselves as Robin Hoods rather than ruthless felons. But there is no reason for anybody to sympathize with their predation of the ships lined up to go through The Ring once the government OK's it.

Well, nobody said inhabited, habitable worlds... As you see, something seams to be alive there, but civilization is gone. Holden said it in season 3 too. Everybody experience blue stuff when passing trough one of rings... but maybe you had a good observation. Trying not to spoil... let's just say something about it may happen... But when and what? However, major plot (it is clear now) is on Illus. They are also, Bobbie plot, Avasarala plot and Ashford (and Drummer) plot. Some is needed, some is setup for later... But it is as usual in this show - you never know what from earlier they are going to use. Maybe you find this season a little bit calmer (after season 3 everything appears slower :) ). But this is great season... A lot of people said that book 4 is their at least favorite book. But the book is maybe crucial - very important book - and with a lot thing they are playing long run... One more thing - authors wrote every book in different style... They characterized this one as space-western. And I totally agree.

14:20 As far as I remember, in the books, holden had full-on visions (similar to the first one in how vivid they were) most of the times he went through the ring, and those happened only to him. But this thing that they showed is not a full-on vision, this is another thing that happened to him besides the visions. So this is just my speculation, but I'd say that *that* specific thing, that shadowy blob, I think everyone would be able to percieve that, IF a) they went through the ring slowly enough, and b) they kept their eyes open, and paid attention. Except nobody really has any reason to, same as you don't take your time examining a door frame each time you go through the door. Because notice how most of the time, everyone just goes through the rings, but the roci always takes this extra time when it literally flies at the speed of just like 0.1 meters per second or so. I don't think it was ever explicitly mentioned even in the books, but I always assumed holden made intentionally them to always go through the rings extra slow.

Some of the Belters can apparently make the transition to being Inners, or planet-dwellers, so they want to go through the rings to visit the other planets, like Ilus. The ones who we see on Ilus are the survivors. Other Belters are fixed on staying Belters, or they have no choice because their biology is compromised. So divisions remain, and bitterness. Earth is still viable, just. The real shock is Mars. Who needs dead old Mars when there are possibly 1300 new worlds out there?

Every one of the rings was created by the protomolecule being sent to those star systems by the ring builders. The protomolecule takes over whatever nascent life is on a planet and repurposes it as raw material to build the ring. This most likely prevented any sentient life from developing on any of the planets in any of the star systems that has a ring. The only reason that our solar system, Sol, was spared is because Phoebe was intercepted by Saturn and the protomolecule never reached earth to complete its purpose until the show begins. Add to that, once a ring is open to a new solar system, the ring builders probably went through and took over further preventing any sentient beings from evolving. Bottom line, the ring builders are now extinct and whatever killed them might still be out there.

Drummer made a great point that in 2 generations the planet side Belters would be no different than the Inners. It's the planet's gravity that killed so many Belters, and that Naomi is attempting to adapt to. Recall the tall Belter from season 1 that Avasarala was torturing by just having him on Earth. We humans have evolved on Earth, which includes handling its gravity. Gravity is a force constantly pressing down on everything on the planet's surface. Someone born in space will not have the bone and muscle structure to handle this force.
