If they say "south of west", then you knwo Earth isn't flat, as that naked-eye observation would not comport with the Flat Earth. Hell, sunsets by their very nature disprove a Flat Earth.

Is he a religious flat earther or the pseudo science kind? Because if it's the latter you could point out the fallacy of he's starting off with the conclusion (believing the flat earth) then just waiting for the evidence isn't very scientific and just makes it sound like he really wants it to be true. I was talking to my alien friend, and I told him "I guess we're not as advanced as I thought. Some of us still believe the Earth is flat." He turned to me on confusion, and said "But the Earth IS flat..." ...Damn fourth dimensional beings...

Cant believe I had to do this, but I gotta thank you. I have a friend who I always knew was on the dimmer side, but I didnt learn he believed in the flat earth until a few weeks ago. I found this video and showed it to him. He is actually pretty good at math and such, so he checked over the (very obvious) things that you stated in the video. He is no longer a flat earther, and frankly feels stupid for believing it for so long.. Now I just gotta convince him the moon landing was real imo. Thank you though, helped out a lot man.

@@joopmoop4089 sometimes it happens that the set of information he had at the time makes a flat earth model seems sensible. People like this aren't stupid (like we know who) but is basically lack of information. They can digest new knowledge and correlate with what knowledge they have. But it happens that the poor guy stumbled upon the flat model first, before his good friend provided him with a source of information for the guy to rethink the earth model. Its like how school teach really basic science stuff like if you put static on an object, it can attract water because water is a polar molecule. Very simple to prove water is a polar molecule. Its replicatable. Later down the line in education, you discover more stuff about intramolecular forces, and electrostatic forces. You now realise that while it is true that water is polar because surface tension of water is caused by hydrogen bonding, the forces aren't enough to curve flowing water. And its simply electrostatic charge on the object that curved the water. Still simple and coherent and replicable.

Actually his agenda is to vaccinate the entire globe. Dave's agenda is not to debunk flat earth but to attack anyone that questions whether vaccinations are safe or not. He's just using the flat earthers to smear what he calls "anti-vaxers". This whole agenda is to smear anti-vaxers. Dave uses the same technique that flat earthers use of guilt by association in order to achieve this without actually arguing the vaccination issue on merits. Mr. Dave is using the same technique flat earthers use but because you don't notice he's using baseless rhetoric to smear antivaxers just like the flat earthers use baseless rhetoric to smear those who know and can prove the earth is a globe. Why don't you notice it? Because he's deliberately hiding it by using real science to debunk flat earthers so that you'll trust him -- so that when he attacks "anti-vaxers" (his way of smearing people that dare to ask questions about the safety of vaccinations) you won't notice he's doing it because he first gained your trust by using real science to (correctly) discredit flat earthers. This has CIA written all over it. The average person is not that clever. Not that Dave is necessarily doing what he's doing knowingly -- he's probably just an unwitting asset.

Consistency isn't flat earthers' strong suit. "Hiding God" seems to be the most common answer, but when asked directly, most of them tend to avoid answering and give responses like so they can keep funneling money to NASA or something like that. They seem to think atheists are much more numerous and powerful than they really are.

Tbh a lot of the older theories about the world's shape are pretty freaking cool- flerfs like to claim that all ancient civilizations thought the world was flat.. actually looking at ancient maps of the world though? We have realms which pass through each other ethereally, a world of mountains and streams upon the back of a great god or beast, the entire world existing upon the side and base of a mountain, "traditional" flat earth (hilariously, even unpopular at the time due to being incompatible with navigation), and so many more. We have worlds of rings, small pocket worlds created by divine pantheons, and even worlds born out of the battles of primordial gods, but flerfs chose "it is a pancake kinda" out of all of them? Actually we've known the Earth was round since the days of ancient Greece. Columbus wasn't trying to prove the Earth was round he was trying to find a faster path to India, which is why he thought the native Americans were indians. Columbus was an idiot.

Regardless these people deserve to be made fun of and saying most of them may be trolling could be true on internet forums, but groups often attach their real names to their beliefs and that isn't a sign of trolling. I seriously pissed off a Flat-Earther not long ago during an online debate. He actually blocked me, and then left the debate saying, and I quote him "F-U guys, you tricked me to coming here". LOL Ok, here was what I'd done. I put up a set of four flat-earth maps and asked him to pick which one was the correct one. Which he did. Then I asked him to explain how the sun and moon caused day and night. THEN I asked him, "Ok, on this same map, how do solar and lunar eclipses happen? And he began to stammar and haw and go "they don't exist, it's a hoax, a conspiracy, " etc... and I said politely "Sir, we see them all the time, one is coming up in a couple of weeks, a solar eclipse. If what you say of day and night cycle is true, then how can this happen? And he immediately blocked me after a few nasty choice words and insults.

Mark Sargent, the eminent flat-earth scholar (/s), goes to see a solar eclipse. He complains about having to drive three hours to see it at totality: _“Is that worth it? No, not in my opinion,”_ but he'll go anyway, because _“all we have to do is get the attention of people.”_ The experience changes his view: _“Totally worth it. Worth it. Worth every second of it. So glad I'm here.”_ But, of course, he doesn't say, _“It happened exactly when and where the astronomers said it would! Why can't we in the Flat Earth community make predictions like that?!”_ And he also didn't say that solar eclipses _don't exist._ Even for a flat-earther, that would be a difficult thing to say while actually looking at one.

@@rhetoricalquestion6009 reminds me of a different video: some people did a test, involving a large balloon on a tether on one side of a bay, and a telescope on the other side. as predicted by the globe, only the VERY top of the balloon was visible through the telescope. Mark Sargent was there, and he OUTRIGHT REFUSED TO LOOK THROUGH THE TELESCOPE HIMSELF.

Once had an older friend who was brilliant but had formal education only through elementary school (in the 1910's). He had unparalleled knowledge of human nature but knew no science. One day he argued for flat Earth based on the following argument: "Let's say I leave my house, go have a meal at a restaurant, a drink at a bar, and have sex at her house with the cute girl I picked up, and come home and my house is still here. If the earth moves, how is that possible?" He was utterly convinced by my counter argument: "Let's say you are in your seat on the train going from LA to Chicago. You go have a meal in the dining car, a drink in the club car, and have sex in a berth in the sleeping car with the fine woman you met. Then you go back to your seat and it's still where it was when you left. Does that mean the train didn't move?" A light went on in his head and he understood. At the age of eighty he became an eager science student, learning everything I could teach him. He lived to 101, getting to see the new millennium, having been born in the last few days of the nineteenth century. Rest in peace, Tony.

There was a time I did not understand that the world was round and what the earth was when I was like 4. Then I started preschool and we even did our own experiments with lamps and fruits and everything. It just makes more sense than "magic space pizza BTW HERE IS THE BOOK I SELL ON CONSPIRACIES!111".

I find it funny how they use the argument that you can’t feel the rotation of earth so therefor it’s flat but don’t explain how you don’t feel the flat earth going “up”

I once listen to a woman who said: "If the world isn't created by God, then why does it take exactly one year for the earth to go around the sun?" - You know, even if people accept scientific observations, they still can mess it up terribly.

Dave I have a question. My mother is a flat earther and I tried as hard as possible to disprove her. I told her everything I knew, told her about timezones, lunar eclipses, day and night cycle and much more. I showed her all of your videos and she said “all myths, he’s a professor so he’s in on the secret to hide the truth from you”. She even destroyed my mova globe (which is extremely expensive, and you can research about it if you want). Could you please help me change her little brain dead mind? I've never had the experience of having to deal with a flat-earther in the family ... don't know what to suggest for bringing her round to reality. I wonder what made her become a flat-earther. Was it religious fundamentalism? Exposure to FE content on the internet? Maybe just leave well alone; but has she thought about all the other people who have to be "in on the secret"? Not just professors, but engineers, navigators, airline pilots, geography teachers, amateur astronomers ... the list is endless. Could they all really be in on it? It's absurd. And this fantasy conspiracy would have to have persisted, all over the world, for centuries and centuries. It's impossible.

You probably can't do anything. I just watched another guy's youtube video about how to get flat earthers to shut up and in it he asked like 7 questions about the moon that flat earthers refuse to answer. Like how does the moon work? How far way is the moon? How come we can only see one side of the moon no matter where we are on earth? How come the moon doesn't change sizes as it moves across the night sky? Any flat earther who has any hope of coming to their senses, will realize they were conned once they recognize that they cannot explain how the moon works without admitting the earth is round.

I'm a hobby (astro)physicist but psychologist by trade and I thought of a psychological model to go with the flat earth society and why it is so much more prevalent in very meritocratic societies - i.e. the USA. A large part of US culture is Calvinistic in essence saying with hard work come more blessings. This translates into the "American Dream" where anyone can become anything regardless of heritage only depending on their own talents and efforts. Unfortunately this also puts a lot of blame on those who, well, don't get very far on the social hierarchy. The mind is wonderful at compensating for negative thoughts and emotions, rationalising them away unconsciously in amazing ways. My hypothesis is now, that most flat earth followers are a special type of narcissist personality who fail to reach a societal level they think they deserve. You can then either reevaluate your self-image (which is painful) or you re-evaluate society. By subscribing to a conspiracy theory you not only elevate yourself to an elitist, enlightened level only attained by few, you also simultaneously degrade every person that you previously had to "look up to", e.g. academics, politicians and "smarter" people. Furthermore, you find others with exactly the same mindset and company is always good. That is also the reason why challenging any flat earth follower with rational arguments will most likely amount to nothing, because following your logic they would have to challenge their self-image and re-evaluate their social standing. And the unscientific part of me relishes the thought of a perfect trap where you either have to get down to the bottom with your argumentation or admit you fit into the diagnosis of an anti-authoritarian narcissist... But that is really just a side note.

@Pete is never wrong Of course, this is an overly simplified model and yes, the poor education definitely plays a part since, if you were taught scientific deductive thinking, it'd be hard to not notice the wild incongruities of this model. Sadly, my current research focuses on autism spectrum disorders and I don't have the time or funds to actually work on this scientifically.

@@zhaya5255 There is plenty to work with, and there are other likely mechanisms to consider, such as a belief in complex conspiracies that keep these poor simple folk in their place. We have seen the power of individuals who coalesce these nebulous feelings and provide a simple scapegoat as cause, which can lead to mass action directed towards a "solution". Invariably, the people driving that bus are not stupid, unlike the herd that they mobilize, and no special skills or education are required to participate. Oh yes, it has happened, and if it sounds familiar, you're right.

There's never just one cause for a given behaviour or personality development. I can't count how often I heard my lecturers' favourite word "biopsychosocial" in my studies. 😅 Much as in addiction and abuse, there is a vulnerability in some individuals and there are people who have the ability to single out these targets and make use of their susceptibility.
