The DUTCH WEATHER - How to deal with it?

How to deal with the Dutch weather?
Rain? Snow? Sunshine? All seasons in 1 day?
The weather in Holland can be quite unpredictable...
These expats in the Netherlands tell how they deal with it. Are they complaining about weather, just like the Dutch? Or do they take it as it is?
This video is produced by Bart de Pau: a compilation of quotes by his Summer School's Dutch language students.

    But also an accurate one. Weather forecasts are actually really difficult in the Netherlands (Because of the climate here) On the same day you can have sun, rain and snow. And that can be between september (really) and may. Between may and september you can go from 25-30 degrees of heat to 15 degrees with strong wind and a lot of rain in a few hours.

    As a Dutch person the best weather advice I ever got was from a UK lady: "Did you ever try to outrun a thunderstorm? Yeah I tried and failed so I went to get some fish and chips." The weather is simply what it is, deal with it, if it makes you feel better use a long string of curses to shout at it, I mean we do love to curse so :) Still never EVER stop complaining about the weather, cause if you are Dutch it is never good, even on holiday or hell in an climate controlled building you shall still complain about the weather :)

And that's about the most stereotypical thing people say about Dutch weather.

    Personally I love the Spring in the Netherlands. After the dark Winter it's so nice and refreshing to see the sun starting to shine more brightly, birds returning to the country, everything coming alive again. It's the only season where I'll smile from ear to ear observing the beauty all around me. Dutch Summer on the other hand is terrible. Most of the time I feel like I'm swimming through a sea of hot, damp air, it's like breathing water and I hate it. Upside to it is: amazing thunderstorms.

  • @Rhine0Cowboy

    @Rhine0Cowboy

    5 жыл бұрын

    Exactly, summer thunderstorms are awesome, huge cloudbursts which you can see approaching, roads getting topped off with a few centimeters of water within minutes of the downpour starting, then a few hours later, the sun comes out in force again, the last puddles are evaporating and there's a clear blue sky everywhere you look. Cue you cursing at yourself that you've only been walking outside for 5 minutes and already starting to sweat from the moist warm air.

    There is something I call "Dutch Default Weather": *Overcast grey sky* - You know there must be a Sun, but you have no idea in what direction. *10-15 degrees Celsius* Maybe a little rain. In January you'd call it a warm day, in August you'd call it a cool day, but it can happen any day of the year. So.... Dutch Default Weather.

    Dutch weather is mostly okay. Though there's one thing that I honestly hate because it's something you just can't outrun, and that is hot and damp summer days. When it's nearing 30-35 degrees combined with a humidity somewhere around 90-100%, it's absolutely horrible. And usually it lasts for days. It's not like it's gone by the end of the day. Even in the night it stays like 20 degrees. The only place where it doesn't follow you is in climate controlled buildings, but we don't have that many of those... So in June and July, I'd just rather be somewhere else entirely, just to get away from the sea and the hotness...

    Instructions for creating a weather forecast at least as accurate as KNMI's: - Roll 3d10 (4d10 in July) for maximal temperature - Roll 2d10-2 for minimal temperature. From October to April also roll 1d4, and if the result is 1 then the minimal temperature is negative. - Chance of precipitation: 1d10 + number of days it hasn't rained in a row, DC7 - Amount of rain (millimeters), or snow (centimeters) if it passed: 2d20

    Knew some people from Sweden, near the polar circle. They went and visit the Netherlands during spring. It was above 16 degrees celsius so i wore a thin summerish jacket. The air however was humid so it did drain you from energy very efficiently. The Swedes were wearing thick winter jackets with fur and stuff as if they were going to hike towards the north pole, because they couldn't stand the 16 degrees Celsius. They were dressed for the -20 degrees they were used to during winter xD

    It's simple really. If you hate rain, stay inside. If you hate sun, stay inside. If you hate wind, stay inside. If you hate snow, stay inside. Just never leave the house, blackout your windows and watch youtube all day. You can't change the weather nor accurately predict it more than 3 hours ahead of time here because of the unpredictable nature of the sea climate. So either deal with it or stay at home :') That's probably not the advice people want, but it's reality. Once you accept that it just is what it is sometimes, the comfort with our weather will follow eventually. That goes for a lot of aspects of life actually :')

But it still rains too much for my liking at times during summer. And yes, we Dutch LOVE complaining or at least commenting about the weather. Maybe because it's changing so often. :P I don't get the "always be prepared for any weather" stuff though. I just go by 3 rules for what to bring. 1: If there's an above 25% chance of rain bring a coat. 2: If it's below 15 degrees celcius dress warmer. 3: Always keep an umbrella in my car, just in case. And yes, Buienradar is a godsend. Fairly accurate, constantly updated, and able to view your exact location and per hour of what the weather will do.
