We pronounce "Wi-Fi" with a mix of Dutch and English accent. We pronounce "W" as in English, but the rest of the word as in Dutch. It sounds even more childish. 🤣😂

I love how cutely the lady pronounces "Boompje" I'd like to hug her and the rest of the people.

Just wait until you tell them that Sesame Street used to feature stories about a cat named Dikkie Dik.

So in the Netherlands it’s “magnetron,” which sounds really cool, and in Belgium it’s “microgolfoven,” which basically means “microwaveoven.”

Hello Bart. The woman who said "magnetron" nailed it. She explains it perfectly. I was also surprise to find out that it was microwave the first time I heard it. Anyway, it has some logic sense under the word. It might refer to the magnetic waves it used to heat the food. "Magnetic = magnetron". But yes, it sounds like an electric weapon or something made of metals. 😁 What strikes me is "verrassen", because I didn't know that existed the word with one "r", "verassen". That could lead to a macabre misunderstanding (but perfect for this Halloween. You can verrasen and verassen someone in this festival. 😂). Dutch people who pronounce the "r" sound guttural as French might find it hard to distinguish both words when they speak. Fortunately, the context shows which one is meant. "Pannekoeken" reminds me of a teacher who called us "cebollino/a" or "cebollón/a" when she was angry. The first one means "little onion", whereas the second one is "big onion". Dutch word sounds much more sweeter. It doesn't look like an insult. Finally, I never heard that "swaffelen" word. Of course I didn't, I have never been in The Netherlands, but I haven't heard it on Dutch TV, which I sometimes watch. I'm surprised by hiw many dirty words Dutch people say. Dutch seem logical, responsible, well-mannered, etc. But their vocabulary is quite different. I won't complain because Spanish are even ruder. I swear a lot myself. 🤬😅 It was funny to learn that word. I'd like to know something. Is "swaffelen" used only in situations when a man uses his part inside a non living thing like a wall, or is it used when having sex with people too? This was a very nice video. Keep with this great work. 😆

But it's not about putting it *inside* something, it's more like pushing it against, and moving around a bit. Bit like "the helicopter" ;-) and it can be against anything, including people (for example during "dancing").

The "verassen" is not used very much (apart from misspelling "verrassen", haha). It would be hard to tell them apart in spoken language, I think it would be a small pause between "ver" and "assen", to prevent the rolling r sounding like a double r.

@@jlammetje thanks for your comment. I understand it a little bit now. But do Dutch boys do it at dancing as if it was Spanish and Latin American reggaeton music style? I thought that Dutch were more distant in contact and avoided it. Besides it, Dutch techno, EDM and house doesn't require dancing close. It's more about jumping and moving arms and hands very fast. 🙄😬

I kinda assumed that he was just overpronouncing the 'r' and it turned into 'vergassen'. But your explanation fits his translation of 'incinerating' better. Although I can't imagine anyone Dutch getting confused, because they don't exactly use the verb 'ver-assen'. Whereas, if he told his colleagues "Ja, vanavond ga ik mijn vriendin vergassen" ...

there is no difference in the pronunciation of verrassen and verassen, but the latter verb is quite rare, as people tend to use synonyms (cremeren, verbranden, ...) instead.

Microwave is also microgolf in Dutch but we use it rarely. Our southern neighbors use microgolf for microwave and we use magnetron. In my opinion sounds microgolf more logical for to be microwave.

My sister was once lost in Rome with some of her friends and yelled out in despair: "Isn't there anyone here who speaks Dutch?!" in Dutch. Someone immediately turned around and said "Yes, me. How can I help?" This is in no way relevant to your comment, but you reminded me of it xD

It kind of depends where in the Netherlands someone is from. In the South, where most people have a "zachte G" (soft G), it sounds much nicer than in the North where people usually have a much harsher G.

Tip for pronounciation of "verrassen" and "verassen".... "ver-ras-sen" and "ver-as-sen"... less emphasis on the 'r' when you say incinerate and more when you say surprise. "kut has a deeper meaning"? Now that sounds VERY suggestive for me... (The official meaning of "kut" is "vagina"... In all other contexts it's rather a slang term, so if you see Dutch react strangely to that sentence).... "Misselijk"? What a sick word is that?

Technically any fried dough is a doughnut in the English language. Ironically a donut (the one with a hole) is an oliebol. Oliebol recipies predate donuts and there are sources claiming that a Dutch immigrant in the US changed the recipe to have it cook more evenly, and that is how donuts came into existence. Might actually be true, as the earliest recipies for donuts are based on an enriched, yeasted dough that's nearly identical to the recipe used for oliebollen. TLDR: doughnuts are any fried dough. Donuts are probably a Dutch invention, a slightly modified oliebol.

Guess its time to find words in their language we think sound stupid and/or find cute. Incredible that someone finds the word 'Ontploffen' sound innocent .....yeah ... time to make fun on their language And o yeah .... magnetron is so funny, it sounds like a weapon, the transformers are going to blast you into space ...... pffff no microwave is a great word (is that maybe something for miniature surfers ?) Can't believe you as a teacher are not getting annoyed with these people
