DUTCH CUISINE!? ...what do foreigners think about DUTCH FOOD?

Dutch cuisine? Dutch food?
What do foreigners in the Netherlands think about Dutch gastronomy?
We asked people who are learning Dutch which typical Dutch dishes they know, and what they think about the Dutch cuisine (Nederlandse keuken).
What about the eating habits? How does a Dutch meal at dinner look like? Is it always potatoes + meat + a vegetable...? How about lunch... preparing sandwiches at home to take them with you to school or work?

Volgens Urban Dictionary.

I come from Portugal and been living in the Netherlands for a while now. The best change to our eating habits when we go out, is to hit the restaurant around 5:30pm. This way we can merge the two meals people usually have in Portugal: late afternoon snack (called "Lanche" same pronunciation as "Lunch") and the actual dinner. We usually have wine or beer and a nice "plankje" with cheese, bitterballen, nachos, or olives (or whatever is in the dinner menu as "Starters") and if we find the rest of the dinner menu interesting we stay for dinner and have a main meal. At 8:00pm ish we are done and usually had a great time doing it. This frees up A LOT of time to do other things (specially in the summer), and connects really well with the end of the day routine. We find this approach much much better than in countries where people start eating at 8:30pm, or even later, and stuff themselves with heavy food, get late to bed, don't sleep enough, don't wake up early enough, etc, etc. Regarding lunch, if you don't like bread that much (as I don't), just make your own salads, or buy one from the supermarket. AH has some amazing salads, big variety, good price, and this is something you also can't find in south Europe. At home we still cook a lot but mostly internacional food, which is much easier in NL since there is a tremendously good variety of international ingredients in most supermarkets and grocery shops. So all and all, I'd say I've eaten much better since I moved to NL in regards to eating out, or buying from supermarket.

We eten vaker in een buitenlandse restaurant, grieks, turks, marrokaans etc. of halen chinees, italiaans of surinaams.

If more than 3 children per family survive into adulthood, you will have a birth explosion every 18 to 20 years. They need to get rid of religion that tells them they can't use birth control, They need peace to work the land, so they can feed their children. About Dutch bread, it is the number 1 thing I miss not living there anymore! The first thing I do if I visit family in The Netherlands is go to FEBO and get myself a kalfsvleeskroket. Although I've only experienced the tourist areas, the food I had in Bruges was great and Brussels was incredible (presumably with both French and Flemish influence). Admittedly I consumed all of it with some of the most amazing beer I've ever tasted. In Quebec, we circumvent the ketchup vs mayo controversy by using both when we're not drowning les frites in gravy and squeaky cheese :-) Can't wait to visit Amsterdam to see for myself!

The flavour of the Indonesian cuisine in the Dutch cuisine can be brought back to the (so called ) Golden Era in the Netherlands back in the 17th century. We had colonies all over the world, most of them in East Asia. We took their spices and brought it back to the Netherlands to sell. The company that did this: the VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie; Dutch East India Company) is still, to this very day the biggest company to have ever existed. While Apple has an estimated value of $1.8 trillion, the VOC had an estimated value of $8.28 trillion (!!)

until today Indonesians still call it 'the time of the Kompeni' or 'the era of the Kompeni', and for years i didn't know why us, Indonesians, use the term Kompeni to describe the Dutch people who colonized Indonesia. at first, I thought it was just a slang term for the Dutch. although, I learned the term VOC (verenigde oost indische compagnie) in school, the teachers never explained the meaning of the term to their students; and 99% Indonesian students in Indonesia do not understand Dutch. I realized the meaning of the word Kompeni after reading the term VOC in english. So, the word Kompeni, that has been used for decades to describe the Dutch who colonized Indonesia, derived from the word Compagnie (VOC), meaning Company; because VOC was actually a company.

Barely any spices, always basic ingredients. Potato based, i like potato's but still.
