Bocaj Xab i know the expression but she pronounced ‘ei’ as ‘ui’ which I find quite interesting as they’re both food-related items. Het verschil in uitspraak tussen uu, ui, oe en eu schijnt ook lastig te zijn voor buitenlanders

Dat heeft iedere taal wel. Vaak hele oude gezegdes, met voorwerpen erindie niet meer bestaan. Bv "Dat kan niet door de beugel" kwam van een regel voor honden: er was letterlijk een (stijg)beugel, en als de hond daar niet doorheen kon, was ie te groot. In de 17e eeuw was het in sommige steden verboden grote honden te houden. Nu betekent het: dat wordt niet getolereerd/ geduld. Dat is onaanvaardbaar. Voor ons zijn ze gewoon, al weten we soms ook niet meer waar zo'n idioom vandaan kwam. In andere talen hebben ze ook dat soort uitdrukkingen, die wij dan niet gelijk begrijpen. Als je er meer over wilt weten, van Dale heeft een Idioom Woordenboek uitgegeven. Dat kun je vast wel inkijken in de bibliotheek. :)

I really like the expression, 'Nou breekt mijn klomp', 'My wooden shoe just broke'. It means you're just baffled or flabbergasted! It's often used when you warned someone about something, and you're pretty sure you prevented something negative from happening, but they do it anyway which surprises you!

Tjonge Tjonge, maar hè hè, kan ook gebruikt worden als iemand iets verteld wat totaal logisch is en geen uitleg nodig had.

To say goodbye in Noord-brabant, you say "Houdoe" Some would say it come's from "How do (you do)" but it actually comes from "Houdt je goed" wich means "Stay well", "Be well" or "Keep yourself well". I love that word.

I think the use of "ja hoor", nee hoor" is a remainder of past times. Back in the day, children were taught to speak to adults always using two words, one word was considered being impolite. Children had to say "Yes mother" "No sir" etc. instead of just yes and no. So saying "ja hoor", "nee hoor" feels somehow more polite, it is to make sure people don't feel being snapped at.

Over the years, having friends with a lot of different dialects and backgrounds in the Netherlands. It really depends where you're from and how the intonation of your voice is when saying "hoor", as in some parts of the Netherlands it's used as an adjective as sort of "sigh" but can also be "annoyance" (due to interruption) or even to put some "aggression/emphasis" on the moment/situation (like in games when someone kills you for the umpteenth time: Ja hooooor, hoe doet hij dat). "Hoor" is used as an adjective all over the Netherlands not only Fryslan like some people here claim (not OP). My girlfriend always has a hard time when I use hoor as an adjective because I speak clear but very flat/monotonous and without intonation (I have trouble regulating pitch and volume in speech, sometimes I say something happy, but she thinks I'm using it in a depressive form because I sound so neutral). That's why dutch (I think, read: opinion) is sometimes a language that is really confusing for non-native, because we can say the same sentence in different ways to describe different moods.

It's not steel pipes, but pipe stems. Think of the old, white clay pipes.

As a Dutchman I love to say (in English): "unfortunately peanut butter". I don't know why, but it just makes me very happy.

Hearing this, it living in a place where I speak English most of the times, it is refreshing how foreigners learn al those fun dutch expressions... not that the Brazilians have no expressions. In fact I noticed in the time I came often in Brazil that in Portuguese there are similar epressions to the Dutch. One thing they do in Brazil, like in the Netherlands is to make "verkleinwoorden".... cafezinho (een kleine kopje koffie), gatinho (katje), bijvoorbeeld...

Danish has 'cucumber time', too: 'agurketid'. :)

"Het regent pijpenstelen" is not "its raining steel pipes"! The 'stelen' comes from 'steel' (like in 'steelpan) and means shaft or stem. It refers to the long thin shafts of smoking pipes. So "het regent pijpenstelen" means its raining long thick drops of rain and not small droplets. I dont understand why people keep translating it to steel pipes. Stalen pijpen ≠ pijpenstelen!!

I always thought it refered to the long raindrainage pipes that are always on the side of buildings. Atleast that's how I think my mom explained it when I was a kid. But to be fair it's pretty much the same thing in the context. Although drainagepipes gives it an extra meaning.

I find it funny when foreigners, who are putting in the effort to try to understand the Dutch ways, seem to understand words and expressions when they explain it... until the last words of their explanation, which would then make it clear that they do not really understand it. But they will get there,

To be honest some of the Dutch spelling rules are a bit annoying but this can also be because of my dyslexia

Komkommertijd sounds like the German expression "saure Gurken Zeit" which has the same meaning.

I think helaas pindakaas might come from a nursery rhyme that begins, 'Pinda liep langs de spoorwegbaan....' (You'll have to google the rest.)

This isn't an idiom, but rather an expression I almost always hear: "Nou, nou..." What does it mean exactly? Because sometimes I'll hear people use it, followed by a contrast/negation to what another person has just said. Is that really how it's supposed to be used?

Nou nou is similar to tsjongejonge. It can be translated into "well well" and conveys often a feeling of surprise that something almost went wrong (but didn't) whilst it should never have been that way. Or it expresses a judgement on stupid behavior of someone. For example if you see someone speeding you can say "Nou nou, moet dat nou?" which means "Well well, is that necessary?".

@@sirquasi Thanks for that bit of info! I've been living here in NL for 8 years now and I've not really used any Dutch idioms, just a few expressions. I'm still not confident about using them.
