The DUMBEST CONTROVERSY in Montreal Expos HISTORY | 1990 Expos
Is it racist to demote a guy hitting .155 through the first month-and-a-half of the season and hitting roughly .170 over his last three months of play dating back to last year? Well, Montreal Expos pitcher Dennis Martinez thought so when the team demoted catcher Nelson Santovenia to Triple-A. And the outrage from this, from players on the team to coaches to the front office, was noticeable, to say the least.

There was a journalist in the Montreal newspapers later said in a expos documentary he said "Dennis Martinez was at his best when he was upset or when he had something to say that was controversial "
Imagine a team with Dennis Martinez Randy Johnson and a sober Pascual Perez with Jeff Fassero John Wetteland in the wings. That would been a filthy pitching staff. That Langston trade in 89 set the franchise back

@@matthewdaley746 I think that's a bit harsh there as the attendance wasn't great (they were among the bottom rung) it was at least consistent up until '97. Factors such as star players leaving in droves, a dilapidated stadium and being in a bad part of town doesn't help. If the Expos had been given a chance at winning a championship in '94 we'd have seen a new outdoor stadium and an influx of fan interest. Also your claim about the Blue Jays is completely off base. The Jays were among sellers from '84 to '98 where they averaged more than 30K fans a game. They're pulling very good numbers today and the makeup of that crowd has ZERO to do with the '92-'93 demo as the Jays have one of the younger fanbases around. They've averaged more than 30K fans a game since 2013 with the exception of '14 (where they were literally under a thousand patrons from hitting a 30K average) '18 and '19 where the on field product wasn't good. (Can't really count '20 and '21) Last year the Jays were 3rd in attendance.

@SPTO Fair enough, but, the Expos have only themselves to blame, nobody forced them to strike, and, there's no guarantee they'd have, won, in their, first, opportunity, the real victims, were, the White Sox, Toronto's run, was, just about up, anyway, because, Duane Ward's arm exploded, period, oddly, enough, Tampa Bay succeeds, despite, a, rather, indifferent, fanbase, plus, gagging, against, the Mariners will, truly, hurt them, unquestionably.
Saying everything you don't like is racist? Sounds like El Presidente was ahead of his time.
He was made because they sent his bro down to Triple-A and thought he could use his popularity to keep him around. The Expos clearly did it because he was in a slump and it was hurting the team. I remember Santovenia--the guy could do the job defensively. He had value even if he didn't hit much, especially if he's the personal catcher for your ace. But there's no justifying .155. You have to do better than that.

I didn't know El Presidente fixed his mouth to spout that BS! No wonder the Expos put a gag order on him. I'm black and one-quarter Cuban and I can safely say that Santovenia was demoted for a legit reason (awful hitting) and not due to his Latin American heritage. That even "Big Cat" Andrés Galarraga, who's from Venezuela, said that Santovenia's demotion to AAA had nothing to do with racism says a lot. The catcher being promoted back to the Expos after about a week made Martinez look even crazier.
Sounds like Dennis Martinez would fit in perfectly with today's society crying racism over any little thing.
The only thing that was somewhat questionable by the Expos in this area was waiting so long to give Felipe Alou the managerial job after he had more than paid his dues.

I was an Oriole fan and loved Dennis Martinez......however as a kid one day while the game was going on I was walking around the outside of the stadium. Dennis was in uniform standing at a service entrance. I watched him for a while and it looked like he exchanged money for a small package. Even as a kid I thought it might be drugs. Years later after he left a lot of stories came out about his drug and alcohol problems. Likely he was making a drug purchase and likely he did it in front of very young fans. He had some issues.
Reminds me of when the Mets cut George Foster in 1986, and replaced him in the lineup with 2 black players (Mookie Wilson & Kevin Mitchell in a platoon).. Foster said the Mets cut him cause they were racist because his roster spot was filled by Lee Mazzilli, a white guy. Foster was clearly washed up.. He was in a DEEP slump when cut, had alienated many teammates and the last straw was when the Mets got in a bench clearing brawl and Foster sat on the bench. and watched.. They were trying to trade him, but no team would take him in a trade. After the Mets cut him, he played 15 games for the White Sox and his career was over.

Further support for the ball club is the obvious factor that they're giving the player an opportunity to get a handle on the issues going on with his performance decline and not choosing to unload him via trade or by DFA'ing him instead. In other words they value him and want very much for him to fix things in order to be productive when clearly they have the option of just getting rid of him one way or another. In addition, pro athletes have an expectation to be accountable for their productivity as evidenced by the fact that the guy wasn't arguing that his demotion was unjustified.

@@matthewdaley746 This is a laughable statement. The Expos were far and away the best team in baseball in 1994 and clearly victimized by the work stoppage more than anyone else. Sure, the players weren't forced to go on strike and many of them lost their best ever chance to win a World Series as a result, but screw the players and the owners, the real victims were clearly us diehard Expos fans who not only got shafted out of seeing our best ever team finish the season but then also had to sit by and watch while ownership dismantled the team and sold off four of our best players (Grissom, Walker, Hill and Wetteland) before the 1995 season ever started, effectively sending them from first-to-worst in the NL East. From there, baseball in Montreal never fully recovered. The Expos played 10 more seasons after 1994 and only had a winning record in 3 of those ('96, '02 and '03), falling short of 70 wins 6 times . Plus, the Expos' 1994 schedule was backloaded with home games and they lost the revenue for 29 home games at a time when they were packing the house. Even if they hadn't won the whole thing (and they would've), just to be deprived of seeing that team finish the season and make the postseason for the first time since 1981 was a crushing disappointment. To then see their fortunes turn so dramatically in one year was a huge slap in the face, and it began the slow descent to the team's demise. People who think Montreal is only a hockey town have no clue about the passion Montrealers had for the Expos. From their early days as lovable losers playing at Jarry Park, where they first earned their permanent nickname "Nos Amours" (our beloveds) to their prime years from 1979-1994 when they won more regular season games than any other MLB team and often outdrew the Yankees and Mets, to the bitter end when there were only a few of us diehards left, the Expos were a huge part of the city. I'm a Montrealer and grew up a Habs fan but the Expos were first in my heart by a mile. I would've traded ten of our Stanley Cups for just one World Series. It never happened, mostly because of the 1994 strike. By the way, the Expos moved to Washington in 2005, the year the White Sox won the World Series. Looks like you White Sox fans recovered just fine. Meanwhile, a little over ten years after having the best team in baseball the Expos were dead and gone. If the strike didn't happen the team is still there, there's no doubt in my mind. As Pedro Martinez said, "if that '94 team had been kept together the Yankees wouldn't be talking about how many World Series they won in the 90's". And we wouldn't have been talking about all the empty seats at Olympic stadium in the years following either. All the Expos fans who were turned off of baseball by the events of 1994, and all the young kids in the city who would've become fans but didn't because of what happened, all of it hinged on strike and the consequences of cancelling that season. No team's fans in any other sport have ever been dealt such an unjust, cruel kick in the teeth. Case closed. Not even up for debate.
