In ancient religions, your love for your god was measured by the size and value of your sacrifice. And there was no higher sacrifice than your firsborn male child. This is literally the entire point of the Abraham-Isaac sacrifice story in the bible.

When it comes to the debate of the Child Sacrifice, I think it's important to understand that we have multiple accounts of this happening from multiple cultures. The Israelites talk about child sacrifices to Moloch and Baal by the Pheonicians, or Canaanites as they were called. This god took on the appearance of a great bronze bull. Athenians were forced to pay tribute in the form of Children or youth to the island nation of Crete, a powerhouse at that time. They were likely sacrificed to their gods, and this is where we see the Minotaur myths come into play. It is possible that they adopted many of the Phoenician beliefs. Other Greek cities wrote about child sacrifice in Carthage and later the Romans did the same. If it was just a couple of instances of this, then we could assume that maybe things were being exaggerated or they were being painted negatively. But when we have so many instances of this bull-like god taking youth sacrifices from so many different cultures over such a long period of time, I think it becomes difficult to defend the Phoenicians and it begins to paint a terrible truth about some of their religious ceremonies.

Facts. I’m situations like that they say it’s fear based as to why, for example, the mother won’t do anything. Idk. In situations like that, the mother picks the dude over their children even to this degree because she wants to keep that relationship & financially relies on that man. Given that, there’s definitely a theme of blood sacrificing in that as the mother is willing to bargain the very safety of their children for the sake of the man causing the havoc. Scary.

It isnt that he refused, it was only after intervention in the final minute after being told. Even then there was sacrifice of blood contained therein of animals. Christ stood by the Old Testament was the irrefutable Word of God, predicted His own death and resurrection and absolutely everything He promised has come to pass. As someone who uses PCR for a living. Why does this documentary put so much weight on her female result, when she had 12 results were no DNA was retrieved? I like what the one guy said afterwards, there needs to be repeatability to make sure that she just didn't find her own DNA contaminating the sample.

Good documentary. Very suspenseful and entertaining. Just one issue I noticed: the writers seem to think that only boys were sacrificed in ancient times with few exceptions. For anyone who has read the Bible carefully, the Israelites during the time of the prophets were constantly reprimanded for child sacrifice which they adopted from the Phoenicians (Canaanites). In fact, in Deuteronomy, Moses commands specifically that none of them follow the inhabitants of Canaan in causing "his son or his daughter to pass through the fire" to strange gods. There are many other references to this effect (i.e., 2 Kings 16:3, 17:17; Jeremiah 32:35). Most notably, however is 2 Kings 23:10: "And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech." It is actually surprising that this is not acknowledged, but, I suppose it is to be expected from documentaries that are mostly concerned with allowing controversy to continue and keeping both sides happy. The apparent disconcern with data that does not fit the narrative always makes these sort of documentaries disappointing.

I think the pushback comes from modern (and by that I mean Enlightenment & Post-Enlightenment) skepticism and chronological snobbery that says since Ancient worldviews and cosmologies differ from our own, nothing they said can be trusted until completely validated in every way by archaeological evidence. (I’m all for archaeological inquiry, btw.) To the PURE materialist, in search of PURE objective reality, histories springing from supernatural worldviews are deceptive until proven truthful. Such ancient worldviews & cosmologies, IMO, are neither automatically all true or all false. But it’s safe to say there is much that is true and trustworthy in ancient sources, it’s not all imperialistic/nationalistic polemic.

Well said ive been studying history and how it matches up biblically if it even does that all... and it seems to be matching up pretty well, to the point where I would say it seems as if science is catching up with the Bible... This was also intended to be a non-biased study if anything I was biased towards religion or the Bible in anyway not being true and I found that there's a lot more to the bible than ppl realize..its sad that at least in my case I can say I was brainwashed to believe that the Bible was in no way true and God was Santa Claus for adults...i now believe the opposite is true

@@lauracatherine9925 That is not historical fact. It is based on your sect's belief. There are many sects, many beliefs. Including that God sacrificed his own child. You are basing your belief on the story that christians called Jesus "God" but it was popular at the time to use that word to identify a leader. Romans called their emperors "God," as well. It doesn't mean god was actually some guy named Jesus, and it doesn't mean god was an emperor. It was just the language at the time. However, modern christianity relies heavily on the concept of "God" sacrificing his only son--Jesus. That's child sacrifice. You may feel a certain way about it, but it is no less a blood sacrifice than what was claimed in this video.

@@EX-JW-SJD I don't know more than them. But just because the DNA evidence shows it was a girl doesn't mean that child sacrifice didn't happen. Archaeologists can make mistakes too. Besides the DNA test itself looks very unreliable. What if they had taken another sample? What if that turned out to be a boy? Even if it did, girls can be sacrificed too. We can't blindly believe everything they tell us.

Romans often left unwanted babies to the elements. Greek fathers had the right to kill children they deemed to be defective. Even in the Middle Ages infants and children weren’t especially expected to live past childhood. We are lucky in our age to cherish our children and expect them to live past adulthood. I myself, can’t imagine a parent doing this.

The fact that they were accused of it everywhere they lived, is proof enough.

Human sacrifices have been happening for thousands of years and still happens to this day. Our kids are being snatched off the streets and used as child sacrifices all over the world. This is very disturbing but nothing new.

I may not be a parent, but my God, the anger and sadness I felt watching this!!! Anyone who has and are still practicing this, they are nothing but pure evil!

Yaweh was a God of the ancient Cananite world and Abraham ( who almost sacrificed his son ) was also part of that culture ( as Abraham came from the city of Ur). It's possible that the story of Abraham being ready to sacrifice his son was part of what was seen as a ritual sacrifice practice in his societies culture at the time he lived, thus, the story speaks of it.

Yahweh didn't really want him to sacrifice his son and He stopped him before he did that, He was testing him, and forbid completely said practices even since the beginning, and used that same instance of Abraham being about to sacrifice his son to leave that clear again, that he didn't want any sacrifice and that He should be the one to provide, then He gave Abraham a goat, this was referencing and predicting Jesus Christ, His coming and sacrifice for us, God was teaching about that too, although of course at that time they wouldn't really know until it happened because Jesus Christ still wasn't born, in fact if you really read it you see how God is more than once very angry with people sacrificing other people and even punishes for it, even His own people who once fell for it and he obviously wasn't very happy

@doloresgronenberg5882 I understand the story very well. But you aren't taking into consideration that Judaism started as a religion at the moment God refuses the blood sacrifice of Isaac. Before then it was still part of some traditions, especially in Canann, where Abraham offered his son and even in Ur in Iraq where Abraham came from, to offer one's first born child to Bal, El, or Moloch. Abraham wasn't officially a jew at the time he was willing to offer his son Isaac. He was doing what many people did in that region. That is why he didn't question God about offering his son to him. It is only after God says he wants Isaac to be a 'living' sacrifice ( because Isaac will be the first Patriarch of the new religion that will be Judaism). That is how Judaism started. When Isaac tried to leave the land of the Cananites, God said no, because he ( Isaac) was a living sacrifice dedicated to forming this new religion ( Judaism) and that he ( Isaac ) had to stay in the land to which he had been dedicated to ( Canann). But Abraham expected to really give his son's blood to God in the same way many people did by tradition in Canan. He did not question it, just like people there did not question it. It was only when God stopped him that he realized that this God was a God of this new religion that was being created at that moment, Judaism. And that this God, Yaweh, wanted Abraham's son to be live so Isaac could sacrifice his life to be dedicated to this new religion...Judaism.

They simply moved to symbolic sacrifice of a male child. It's called circumcision and allows one to have a son despite the sacrifice having been made. The foreskin is the embodiment of the child and offered as the sacrifice.
