ITT: people who don't know what a brilliant move is. Unless they've done some weird things to the terminology, a brilliant move is one where the engine evaluates that the position is better than it thought the position would have been with it's previously recommended "best move". Basically, your move was better than stockfish's best move when the engine re-evaluates after it has been played. I assume, as people have mentioned, this is due to a discrepancy between the playing engine and the analysis engine, but maybe there's also ways for an engine to literally give itself a brilliant move.

I’ve tried the cow opening now several times a day. It not only gives a funny variation to the game, avoiding those closed positions, but my opponents seem to be a little stunned on how to respond to it and I haven’t seen the pawn push as response as of yet. My game is kind of low but I seem to beat better players, so ”the cow” is kind if a favourite at the moment.

the thing is though there is going to be a bunch of different openings that people will say to try but it picked this one exactly for some reason. it seem like a weird opening that would be non sense but the fact that you are pushing your pawns so hard there is a chance for good tades and then have a lot of space or pieces to be able to move to protect well
There were a couple of mid game moves that would have changed the flow enough to collapse the stampede IMHO , like you said at one point the AI made a mistake and you let it play out without any sort of correction , I believe there were multiple missed opportunities , that's the beauty of the game , sometimes chaos triumphs over methodical calculation .

It doesn't really, though. The game would need to be played by the best Stockfish variation
Actually, The Cow is helping me teach the kids some important middle game principles like NOT overextending! It's a great playground for unexplored ideas.
I just watched your other video where you introduce the Cow Opening and had this immediate take before I saw this video recommended as a followup... i'm a total amateur at chess but in terms of strategy and logical warfare it looked like a turtling move that allowed some probing attack capacity. disregarding the moves of chess pieces for a moment but considering that both sides generally have the same movement capabilities, in logical warfare this would mean in that field of engagement (your chess board size) forward movement was sacrificed and initial attack ability is concentrated more on a horizontal front. if the opponent is conservative this might turn into each side further jockeying for position before really committing to attack... but if the opponent realizes immediately this is a turtling move then they can be really aggressive and push forward from the outset w/ minimal planned defense and surround your middle center by taking out your wings. this is the kind of defensive position in logical warfare one would take when expecting reinforcements but it has a low probability of launching a successful offensive on its own.
It reminds me of Kasparov playing black against Karpov. He did some bold pawn charging IIRC
I'm wondering how much influence you have on the moves? Just moving white pieces until cow is complete and black 100% on it's own? Then white also on it's own the rest of game I take it?
Someone said he was reporting me because I was using an engine. I was using cow opening 😂

I used to play this opening (the cow opening) to the t when I was younger. From 14 onto my 20's. So about 20 - 14 years ago now. Granted I never knew anything about chess theory then and still don't know much now. But I would used it as a defensive set up with offensive potential. At least that's how I saw it then. What's even funnier is the friend I would play this opening on, would do that exact triple pawn line up in response. lol. So for the first few moves, out of sheer luck it looked like the games we used to play as kids. I am so happy someone has done something with this!! As I got older I just always thought it was a silly thing he and I used to do, pretending to set our pieces up in various formations like it was Age of Empires before we started taking pieces. It takes me back to my childhood learning and playing chess. This made my month. And congrats on officially creating this opening, it's a treasure. Also, subbed.

Also I want to clarify something, I am not in any way saying, "I played it first" etc etc. I am expressing my surprise and delight that someone else through the workings of the universe has not only stumbled upon, but purposefully created this as an opening. It's just wild lmao. My friend and I were just kids playing chess, and found we had more fun when we would set up our pieces how we wanted them, and then started taking.
Seems to need an insanely high rating to make it work. I'd like to see a 900 (my current--but climbing fast! Moo!!) stampede attempt on my cow. I would gobble pawns while developing.
Very interesting kind of refutation, thank you for showing!
I like the Rooke slide move, where you stampede the pawns a row out to give the Rooks the ability to slide across the board and join the queen for a "threefore", attack. Bishops Knights and pawns do the dirty work keeping the threefore in tack. Good luck with your experimentation Anna.
it could be called the ''Bait Opening'' since the goal is for the opponent to overextend.
That triple pawn reminded me of the saying, until the cows get home.
7:49 the bishop has to "moo"
“the king is in a box” or perhaps a castle
I'm with Mikan1546. You should try playing the Texas Longhorn Variation and move the bishops to d2 and e2. I think that might weaken black's pawn offensive. Usually once I've gotten the bishops in the center and castled, I send the knights on the offensive. I've had good results with them being in the center and on the sides. Just a thought.
Hi ! Casual 1200 elo player here. I play occasionaly chess (around 30 games a year). I took part to 2 chess tournaments last month. (9 games each, 12' + 3'' Fischer par player). One before knowing the cow opening (3 wins, 1 draw, 5 losses, I did not lose against lower ranked than me) ; one today, in which I played 9 times the Cow Opening (3 wins, 6 losses, including 3 against lower-ranked players). I lost mainly due to later blunders or failed winning finales so I'm not sure the opening is responsible but I think it is not an opening I feel comfortable with.
Loving the content! Just noticed how much your accent has changed since I started watching you! Crazy😅
I like the raging bull attack the king just attacks ferociously from the beginning of the game

I came up with this type of 'opening' myself about a decade ago [proof among my Facebk notes, although notes feature has since been removed]. But I won against AI Factory Chess level 5 - however has learning capabilities, so soon learnt to overcome it ! UPDATE found some privated posts including game notations after a search, and at the time seemed to have named it the 'saw formation' (pawn attack resembling the jagged edge of a saw)
I have tried the cow opening a few times with mixed results. I find after I play e3, e5, d3 then my opponent hits me with bishop to b4+. I have to throw another pawn forward c3 to kick the bishop away. It makes it look like I'm starting my own mini stampede. A few more moves, setting my knights up, Ne2 and Nd2 they push their other bishop to g4 pinning the knight to the queen. I usually respond with pawn to d3 but that that would block my queen and allow e3 to be taken if their dark square bishop retreated to c5. Interesting problem.
With the cow introduction, you attack the pawns with your knights or your knights are attacked by the pawns😯

It's cool for you that you were able to come up with an opening that is both novel and playable, but I'm actually far more interested in the fact that ChatGPT was able to come up with a playable response. That seems astonishing! I wonder though if it came up with then name first (Stampede) and then supplied some plausible moves which just happened to be not losing, or whether it actually understood the chess. In fact did ChatGPT even know the moves to the Cow, or just the name? And was this the free version (GPT-3.5) or the paid version (GPT-4.0)?

@@JITCompilation No, if you stop the video at 10 seconds in and look the actual ChatGPT text (gotta be quick or you'll miss it!) you'll see that ChatGPT explicitly specifies d5, nf5, c5, and b5 as the first four moves for Black. (From Anna's commentary it sounds like g5 and h5 were also specified, but you can't see enough of the text to know). However there is no mention of White's moves, so it's possible ChatGPT just started with the name "Cow" and constructed a "Stampede Attack" response without having any idea what it was responding to, and it was just happenstance that Stockfish was able to take it from there and make it work. I suspect that's what actually happened. The alternative -- that ChatGPT actually knew the moves of the Cow and understood enough chess to supply the opening moves of a playable defense -- would be far more interesting. Anna doesn't seem to be a member of the Tech Geek Club; otherwise she would have published the entire chat and spent half the video talking about it!

at 07:23 maybe you can do a ent passant and later move the queen to g7
@AnoNymous-mv4mj
Жыл бұрын
No, you can't do en passant from the 3rd rank, only from the 4th (or 5th on the other side). A way to think about it is that you can't use the double move as a trick to create a passed pawn without giving the opponent its chance to take, but in this case the simple move would be enough to pass the pawn anyway.
"Scissors in the cereal box"? Omg, Anna!
The cow jumped over the moon on its way to heaven.
I actually came across the cow opening while playing chess and i lost
The Stampede Attack isn't actually that crazy when you recognize that White's Cow Opening is passively allowing the opponent to grab the center and a space advantage. All of the pawn moves are just to solidify the space that the Cows patiently grazing on grass are letting the opponent get. However, you don't need to play as pawn-happy as a top engine. A valid approach is ...h5 when the Knight is on g3 like your GM dad mentioned Anna. He was trying to refute this opening before you made this video xD p.s. I also find it funny you emphasized Stockfish calling its own moves Brilliant. This just reminds me of the photoshopped meme of Obama giving himself a medal lol

Changing move orders (e.g. castles even before the other knight is our) should be ok, as long as the outcome is like the cow you can call it a cow. If it walks like a cow, moo like a cow, and runs like a cow, then it should be a cow. The theme of cow is pawns e and d on the 2nd line, 2 knights in front of its home (b and g).
