@@boughtbot2639 she’s just on antidepressant treatment - it’s a natural body’s reaction to hormones being injected into your body to make you feel better lolz. My mom has the same thing & got 30 kg heavier too - the extra weight can go away for a while but it always comes back until you stop the treatment 💁🏻

I thought it was interesting that the show starts and ends with Diane. The first episode is her first involvement in Bojacks life by being his ghost writer, and the last episode ends with what is supposedly the last time they ever interact.

Diane Nguyen was the only one who admitted she had Depression. Bojack didn’t, he just took care of his alc and drug problem but he couldn’t get over it because he didn’t deal with his depression. That’s what Diane made better than Bojack.

tbh, i don’t think bojack’s deal is depression. i honestly saw him as a cluster B kinda case. what he probably needed most (and rejected) was therapy

@@squishtrovert I mean we can't trivialize depression or trauma. We act like these are all clear cut. BoJacks trauma was from his childhood, which sucks, but also as the result of his immoral and almost criminal acts. We can't forget that while depression is an illness you can give yourself depression by traumatizing yourself with terrible things you have done. Soldiers for example kill people and cause destruction, and often suffer Ptsd, bipolar, and every other mental illness. I saw him as a weak child whose bad parenting lead him to crimes he doesn't have the capability to forgive himself for and get over. Like a true pulling yourself up by the nape of your own neck. He still is an asshole and belonged in prison. Hopefully him getting what he deserved without the bubble of wealth and hollywood privilege lead to some change. That may be his only hope. As hollywood is probably going to invite him back with open arms.

@@brannlagrone6001 I don't thinknit would have helped. I think a huge portion other then bojacks completely fucked up personality disorders is that he was a hollywood star. So everyone was protecting him to make money off him. They'd probably send him to a therapist to feel good about himself, then it backfire. I think he needed to go to jail provided much more character growth and finally getting a perspective outside his sheltered life and a desire to change and come to terms with his horrific actions. I'm not for retribution, but one month in jail with compulsory sobriety had a huge positive impact. Even more then his experience at Wesleyan. I think positive growth experiences are awaiting him outside of hollywood and he doesn't go back

Diane’s criticism of the show Philbert as a proxy scapegoat for justifying shitty behavior for shitty men was one of my favorite moments in all of Bojack. I know this term gets thrown around a lot but it was the most eloquently handled meta-reference I’ve ever seen in television. It was a frantic realization by Diane *and* the Bojack writing staff about how their shows and their main character could be perceived.

I always felt that Diane didn’t deserve some of the hate she got. I personally always found her incredibly entertaining and interesting, and the detail of her gaining weight in the months after starting to take her antidepressants was very poignant to me. She wasn’t always perfect, but it feels weird that some people try to excuse/defend some of the other characters worst actions but not her mistakes.

she didnt deserve any of the hate she got for a couple reasons, one being that she is a tv show character and the way people act like characters are real people with real agency is so silly. also she is like the emotional and thematic core of the show, a mirror of bojack but a more socially acceptable version. people need to stop taking the actions of characters so literally and try to think about what they represent. i guess thats hard in most shows since theyre so badly written but this show is different :)

She's like Anita Sarkesean; her only crime was being critical of the world too early

A good summary, but I feel like the one thing this brushes over a bit is her time in Cordovia. Obviously her dissolution with Sebastian St Clair is part of it, but she also experiences the loss of the child she had grown close to and following that seems to suffer from some PTSD. I think her realising she didn't have the emotional fortitude to be out there making a difference in these places, like she always imagined she would, is what set her into her downward spiral at BoJack's house; at this point she feels that she's failed, she has no purpose any more, so why bother with anything?

agreed, that was a big turning point for her, both the trauma of losing Kinko, and by extension everyone else who died around her there (which is implied to be a huge amount), and how it shattered her self-image and belief in her ultimate purpose or destiny, which she never quite reconciled until the very end of the show. we can also tell from her screaming Kinko's name when she wakes up, and mentioning seeing not wanting to see dead refugee children in her dreams anymore, that it definitely haunted her for a long time afterwards. the show was subtle about it and didn't hammer it home quite as much as certain other motifs or traumas in the arcs of their characters but i always felt it was just as significant

i feel like diane’s arc is the growth from “you are the things you do” which is insightful on some level but is also kind of short-sighted and shallow, to “you are the culmination of every relationship/interaction you’ve ever had with others and that in turn shapes the things you do”

You are a lot of different things at one time and trying to simplify it to something as simple as “actions make the person” isn’t helping anyone. You are PERCEIVED by the things you do, but you are more than that. Every thought and experience you’ve had, as well as the people you meet and the emotions you feel, are parts of you. It’s why people feel some sort of sympathy for Bojack. We see life from his perspective and know the reasons for his actions, whether you think that reason is enough or not. If we saw Bojack from another character’s POV, many people wouldn’t hesitate to call him a bad person.

@@noel-nl3ce no, the unspoken interior of every person matters only to themselves. Perception is ultimately what makes a person on a societal level. You are who you are perceived as so whilst you may be a different person by your own estimation, this ultimately doesn’t change that by the estimations of other people, you are something very different. If an action is never carried out, and outcome never achieved, it does not matter. The reason people sympathise with Bojack isn’t his interior thought process. It’s that he expresses that thought process and the viewer sees it.

@@TheseUseless This is such a narrow-minded view on the human consciousness and who we are as people. It’s like saying if everyone thinks I am naturally calm, I am calm even if I react in anger very frequently. The whole “if a tree falls down in a forest and no one sees it, the tree didn’t actually fall” argument is just an excuse to justify making assumptions on other people and their lives.

I’m still beyond grateful that when Diane put on weight from antidepressants, NO ONE chastised her for it.

Jessica Biel also burned Zach Braff alive and ate his charred corpse in front of multiple witnesses, but somehow the avocado thing had more weight in tanking her campaign than the murder of a celebrity.

I relate to Diane a LOT. Not all aspects, but Good Damage was one of the most personally inspiring episodes of the show for me. I'm a writer/artist and I related heaps and it helped me look inward and find the story I wanted to tell too. AND I'm in the process of leaving a relationship that I'm not happy or fulfilled in, it's hard

When I didn’t like her after my first run through of the show I watched again anyway for good writing and realized that the reason I didn’t like her is because she reminded me of me in a lot of ways. Many people don’t like mirrors. It’s only a theory but I wonder if others feel the same way about her that I did.

I love that when Guy is asking her to take the meds and after she does Diane bring up gaining weight as a negative, but when Guy sees her, he’s just happy to see her. He doesn’t care bc the meds do help her. And throughout the rest of the season no one brings up or jokes about it (if I remember correctly) bc it’s natural and part of the meds, the meds help her and that’s what matters not how she looks just that she’s feeling better

31:17 That moment where Diane is smiling and holding up the sign saying "Dawson's Creek was always bad" makes me emotional. Seeing her transition post-antidepressants just warms my heart.

This is one of those rare shows where all of the main cast is thoroughly given depth that also helps recontextualize their prior actions

It pains me so much that that ten minute conversation is probably the last words they ever spoke to each other. One of them probably goes on to hear about the other's passing through an old mutual friend if anyting.

I used to live in Providence, about an hour away from Boston. Been there countless times though.

as someone who was in a diane/bojack dynamic and left january of 2020 (shortly before season 6 dropped), it was so important for me to see diane leave and be better off for it. especially because i was experiencing so much self doubt over my decision. coincidentally, i was also on prozac at the time and was struggling with it!! so i love diane, and i'm so happy for her, and i'm so happy for myself as well :)

Dang, I didn't realize that Diane's childhood was a reason why she had trouble opening up about her feelings in couples therapy. That and Ivy and Moose's friendship is her's and Bojack's. I absolutely love Diane and her arc through the series. I saw parts of myself in her (plus the fact she's represented a Vietnamese American which I related to since I'm Asian American). Diane doesn't get enough love and way too much hate (or very loud vocal hate) Edit: also wow, Diane and PB had 6-7 fights before divorcing. Which is interesting since PB felt like their relationship would end in 5 big fights

The most unique thing about Diane is she is the story. The entire timeline of Bojack Horseman is from when Bojack first meets Diane to the last time they talk. Every other person either already knew Bojack or met him after the start of the series. Some characters ended their relationship before the end of the series and some kept it going. Diane started and ended the series which was such a different way to timeline a series and I love it.

i love diane with all my heart, i think she is a great example of a person who really really tries to do better and be better despite how hard it is. and sometimes not just better for the sake of it, but also do right by yourself. i’m also absolutely in love with the way this show portrays the struggle of finding yourself through Diane, especially considering her upbringing. anyways i started watching your videos for bojack content, but honestly the other videos and delivery is so good and throughout, you’re the best!

Ik 22:14 made a lot of Bojack fans annoyed at Diane, but when she talks about the library in Beauty and the Beast, she's not specifically talking about the library, she's talking about the THOUGHT behind it. Beast knew Belle loved reading so showed her the library. She wanted Mr Penutbutter to show her he understands her and loves her for her passions. It was never about having a recreation of the Belle library!!!!!!!

Watching Diane get happiness in the end, get a chance… it just gives me a lot of hope when dealing with my own bs. So grateful for her character, even when they knew she was just gonna be torn apart by a large part of the fan base

It's kind of wild - Diane and Bojack's lives are so interwoven in the earlier seasons that I feel like I relived the entire main story of the series by watching this. I related to Diane in the earlier seasons very strongly when I was in college, and though I think I grew up to approach problems differently than she does, it's still very emotional for me to watch and think about her journey as a character. She's gotta be one of the best written women in animation. This is a great breakdown of her experiences made with painstaking detail. Great job my friend!

The thing that always makes me so sad for Diane is the Hank vs Diane thing. Diane didn't even accuse Hank like it was a new thing she just mentioned him as one of the many men who have had terrible accusations against them but still have careers, but because people are just learning of it she was cast as leading the charge against Hank when it was nothing more than a passing comment. Then everyone, even those close to her, have a go at her for fighting against Hank when it wasn't her to make it a fight. I can completely understand why she started to hit back when she was made to feel crazy.

She was in general using as an example of seperating and art and artists but many people weren’t aware of the accusations so she got caught in the crossfire

diane as a character is super important to me as a fellow depressed, opinionated, slightly awkward, feminist, wannabe writer from a tough family who does not always stick to her own morals. she’s a perfect character, and the most relatable one in my opinion, but she’s super underrated and overhated. i was really confused after i finished the show and saw that people didn’t like her, because she was my favourite character.

@@fvwak I'd say 50% of them where annoyed with the way Diane would act as an opponent to Hollywoo's ridiculousness and seemingly using activism as a way to not focus on her own issues. It was cool to have a straight man to all the nonsense who would call out the toxicity of guys like BoJack instead of ignoring it, but after a while even I was starting to get bored of her ignoring her own problems by season 5. It's the 6th season that finally takes her away from that environment and starts exploring those deeper issues. These are some of the best episodes of the series, and we finally explore the true core of who Diane is here. The other 50% are sexist and Diane is very obviously a left leaning feminist, who also has the agency to tell BoJack when he's acting like shit, so of course they hate her and disproportionately judge her compared to everyone else in the show. It's best not to engage with those sorts.

I have always related to Diane out of anyone on Bojack. She’s very passionate but sometimes reality tanks her plans or the people in her life. She learns and grows up so much and her relationships grow with her and she learns to finally be happy after having so many issues. This was great, and seeing just Dianes journey shows how much she personally went through and learned her boundaries and dealt with her depression.

Diane ending her friendship with Bojack was really her best decision

Its so weird how little I feel like Diane is talked about when people talk about this show. And when they do, people liken her to being worse than bojack because she seems so self aware of her downfalls. But she is so wonderfully complex and her arc through each season is so profound. Im so glad she got a happy ending along with PC and Todd, they deserved the most

Even though Diane is another one of my favorite characters, i've always thought of her as underrated as well as underappreciated sure i've heard that many people hated Diane since she was basically the female version of Bojack but still.

Diane's story makes me feel like maybe I can be happy and okay one day, too, yknow? Also I appreciated that her weight-gain wasn't something negative about her. And that she still got married and Guy still loved her.

Diane and Guy really warmed my heart in the end. I loved how Guy loved Diane for who she was, and when they were at the airport and he saw her weight gained he still smiled and loved her. He helped her through her depression but also let her make choices for herself and didn’t force her or shame her. It’s my favorite part in Diane’s story. I’m in a happy relationship and it reminds me of the unconditional love me and my partner give to each other. I loved how they got married and shes moving to Houston to start a new life. I loved her happy ending and the conversation she had with Bojack.

Watching this made me realize why I connected with Diane so much. Diane definitely had codependency and depression like I did. I also wanted to be a writer, but ironically, my rock bottom in my life was when I watched this show and was hella triggered throughout. Only to realize, the dynamic between diane and bojack, was an exact friendship i had with the person who introduced me to the show, because he could relate to Bojack himself. Her character arc is definitely a character arc of a codependent person who finds her voice, communicates effectively, and setting boundaries. It's also a great arc for mental health as she was super self-aware of her behaviors and did everything she could to be better. Which is something I've worked towards after I left that toxic Bojack friend and I'm finally reaping the positive results of doing that too. 💗

I absolutely adore that every scene in Girl Croosh, the office has different ‘chairs’

the unfair hate for Diane can be explained by Kelsey Janning when she pitched FireFlame in season 6 episode 8. "If you're a woman and save the day, nobody loves you. They take you for granted. Or worse, they resent you. They try to punish you. The more powerful you are, the more they try to take your power away. And I just think that if your movie is smart, you'll acknowledge that."

Ugh I'm so glad you made this! As a Vietnamese American woman who has been told I remind someone of Diane a lot, I really felt for her character. I didn't really realize until well after the series ended that some people actually disliked Diane and I'm glad that you were able to make such a comprehensive video on her. I think its easier to see some of her questionable actions but at the same time it really does highlight the nature of her arc and the growth she goes through.

Nice, I've always liked Diane and have never understood why people throw her under the bus, all while excusing other characters for worse actions.

She takes a stance against guns until SHE learns they can benefit HER. She shat on Bojack when he paid her to write his book. She's also a massive hypocrite. She even admits as much. Dianne is not a saint.

Guy is so perfect for Diane. I first started watching Bojack in my worst depressive episode and went on meds about the same time that I saw she did in the show. Really helped me feel less alone

I've related a lot with Diane over the years, and seeing her get to a place in her life where she was genuinely happy gave me some hope.

Great time line of Diane Nguyen, but at 25:16 you accidentally started talking about Diana Princess of Wales and Bobo the Angsty Zebra. Try to keep it focused next time

Diane is my comfort character just seeing her makes me so happy and her glow up towards the end of the series just blew me away shes been through so much but she got help and she got through it what a girlboss lmao AND she's so refreshing after watching some of the hard episodes and i never really knew whether or not Bojack would get any better so seeing her push so hard to become the best version of herself she can be just made me appreciate her character so much more

Diane is an amazing character to me and I love how she slowly became more of herself when she started talking her anti depression medications and how she cut Bojack out of her life for good since he hurt her and many people countless times and can we get a Mr. Peanut Butter timeline and I enjoy his character as well and Diane was right when she said “you date younger women” when he should at least date women who are around his age group.

Phenomenal video. Watching the show for the first time, I somewhat identified with Diane and I think the more of my bad habits I saw in her, the more I wanted to see her overcome them. She’s a great, well written character and this video does a great job at humanizing her. GOD DAMN BOJACK IS SUCH A GOOD SHOW

Honestly, as an artist who wants to do mature things, my ideas keep becoming kiddiefied. Her character helped me understand that damage is damage and that we can either focus on it or grow from it. She helped my cut away toxic people and to focus on myself, and accept the help I didn't want because it would be better for me in the end...

The part where Diane sees PB and Pickles kiss is one of the parts of the show that hits me the hardest.

I like Diane’s story cause she also went though stuff as a child that caused deep issues within herself … but unlike everyone else she was able to not become the worst version of herself because of them. I’ve met very few people who don’t self destruct as adults due to childhood trauma. She always kept her morale.

Diane's always seemed one of the most complicated and confusing characters for me, so thanks for this!

Diane always makes me want to go to therapy, because if it is good for her, maybe it could be good for me.

I can’t believe some people don’t like PC. I can understand maybe she’s not your favorite character but how could you not like her?! She’s so loyal and hard-working and inspirational and I’m so glad she got her happy ending 😍

It's so stupid but, people don't like her because she's a woman and that they think she was the only reason why the relationship with Mr. Peanut butter didn't work.

An incredibly well done timeline for my favourite character of my favourite show. Laying it all out like this really helps to demonstrate how much she grew and developed throughout the show, and her story really inspires me and makes me feel like it is possible to get better. Sometimes life's a bitch and then you keep living.

Diane was fine until she met Bojack. She published a book about Secretariat, she lived with Mr. Peanutbutter, happily married, care-free. I guess that is why the finale does not need to point out that she won't see Bojack anymore because it is quite obvious.

Bojack didn't ruin her life per say, he just changed it for both better and worse. She wasn't "happily married because she and mr pb weren't compatible. Ultimately the marriage would end in disaster regardless, because he never listened to Diane and never tried to meet her wants and needs. Bojack was Diane's outlet. He shared childhood trauma that she could relate to, and maybe they weren't good for each other in the end, but they helped each other grow as people.

Sometimes it needs to get worse for things to get better (probably butchered it). Bojack was the catalyst for things getting better for her even though her life was meh/happy-ish before bojack

When Sunny has his heart to heart conversation with Diane after admitting to reading her book and asks if people can still like each other even if they're mad at each other it breaks my heart and makes me cry.

This is great stuff. Show's like Bojack and F for Family have really stuck with me. They really dig deep into trauma and how it shapes us. As an analogy Frank has only ever known Anger from his father, while Bojack has only ever known substance abuse and chasing false highs as represented by his parents. Neither ever received validation as a child, which has shaped their outlook on life. Each show then spends its air time exploring those facets of each character and the need to to move on and grow from passed trauma. As a young parent myself who also has some amount of childhood trauma it's really refreshing that there are shows like Bojack.

I am so thrilled every time you release a new video, especially Bojack related content. You give me an even deeper appreciation of one of my favorite shows of all time. Thank you for what you do!

Diane is such a deeply personal character to me. I'm an Asian writer who is largely disconnected from my heritage AND I'm from Boston AND I feel passionate about political issues AND I've been known to fall for golden retriever type men...hell, even her endgame body type is similar to mine. Like, is she me?? But for real, her insights and struggles stick with me the most when I think about where my life is going, and I have a feeling that now that I'm in my 30s, they will just keep hitting me harder. "Good Damage" is one of my all-time favorite episodes of Bojack. This timeline video is such a great breakdown of her complete character arc and I appreciate it so much. It means a lot that folks see the value and strength in her story.

I think Diane and Sonny's relationship is so interesting and I really wish we got to see more of them interacting together. Whilst Diane made it clear that she didn't want children, being a stepmom to a teenager who only comes to visit them occasionally is different - she's not expected to be a mother to Sonny, but she can be someone who guides him through his late teens and supports him alongside Guy. I think she would be a really positive presence in Sonny's life, even if this is never confirmed. Also I think it's hinted that Sonny struggled with self-esteem issues that crop up in Ivy Tran, which in turn mirror some of Diane's own issues with self-esteem, those she deals with now and those she dealth with in high school. I'd like to think that Sonny bought Diane's books and read them as a way of coping with those feelings, even though he'd never admit it to anyone. Bojack Horseman definitely doesn't disappoint in any way and isn't lacking in exploring connections between people, problematic or not, and whilst I think it is more than wise to end the show as more episodes would "oversaturate" everything about the series, but seeing how Diane grew into her role as a stepmom for Sonny and how they learned to get along is something I would have loved to have seen.

I think a part of the reason why Dianne’s relationship with the Buffalo in Chicago is because shes more mentally healthy and happier. But its mainly because Buffalo actually listens.

I so identified with Diane. Wanting to be better than you are seems like the most normal thing. With both Diane and Bojack this lead to a lot of self hate and depression. That distance between what you do and what you believe you should do. But with Diane since her measure of change is related to her social values it got a lot of hate by some fans of the show. Heck, I basically was Diane. Dating a fantastic guy where we didn't really get each other, connection with a depressed friend who I felt understood me (non romantic/sexual though), and instead of failing on writing a book I took forever to write my thesis. Got a diagnosis, mutual breakups with the boyfriend after we started having pointless fights, finished the thesis, then eventually started meds (though for ADHD) and had a slightly easier time. Tried to find a job that supported my social values, but couldn't find one in my field and ended up working for an agency and slowly realized how broken the whole thing was. For that job I moved away and stayed distant from my friend because they were unwilling/unable to address their depression and I couldn't be responsible for them without bombing my own mental health. But I still think of them fondly. Diane is basically the most represented I've felt in TV (though I'm a white woman - moreso in terms of mental health representation and sense of failed professional social improvements).

This video is so great. It reminded me just how much I love Diane.

diane is a character that is painfully relatable to me in almost all aspects, but especially as an asian american who doesn’t feel asian enough. the dog days are over is my absolute favorite episode of the show and never fails to make me cry, and i feel like i’ve never heard anyone talk about it

Same, although I'm not Asian, I'm Mexican American. Sometimes I feel like I'm "Mexican" enough for not speaking Spanish since I live in a community of majority Mexican Americans in a border town. I'm in touch with the culture to some degree, but not so much with the language and it makes me feel like I don't fit in or like a poser. So I REALLY relate to not feeling like you're "enough" since you aren't accepted by white society as a minority, or by people of your heritage

I identify a lot with Diane. I'm actually taking antidepressants now, and one of this days I had a dream of seeing the last scene of Bojack and crying desperately saying I just want to have a happy ending like her.

As a Hispanic born in the US, my family life wasn't sunshine and rainbows, sure I wasn't dirt poor and my parents didn't hit me (like my dad did my other sisters and mom in the past) but my mom was and is still very religious and my dad, though hard for him because he came from a loveless family, just wanted us to do what we dreamed and loved. Siblings were a Rollercoaster, drugs, gangs, alcohol, pregnancies early. I want to be an author/artist, dealing with my depression and still my parents and siblings at the age of 29 (oddly father got better and mom got worse) oh I'd write so much but won't, Diane is very relatable.

I love Diane, she is such a real nuanced character. I feel she did love Bo Jack but i think the whole Penny situation just pushed her too far. Im glad she got her "happy" ending with Guy. She had been hurt so much throughout her life that she deserves whatever form of happiness and a good life. I feel a kinship with her as ive been through some similar situations (divorce,depression and not wanting children) Also does anyone else want to know what Erica looks like its equal to the Maris situation in Fraser. Could be an interesting timeline, the life of Erica.
