The Clutter Connection | Cassandra Aarssen | TEDxWindsor

Professional Organizer Cassandra Aarssen describes the four types of organizing styles she's encountered in her career:
The Four Organizing Styles:
Bee: Crave visual organization with lots of detailed micro categories
Ladybug: Prefer hidden storage with fast and simple macro categories
Butterfly: Crave visual organization with fast and simple macro categories
Cricket: Prefer hidden storage with lots of detailed micro categories
Cassandra Aarssen (@clutterbug_me) is the creator of Clutterbug™, a home organizing business which provides education, inspiration and support to over 500,000 families worldwide through her KZread channel, podcast and various other social media platforms. Cassandra is also the author three best selling organizing books, “Real Life Organizing”, “Cluttered Mess to Organized Success” and “The Clutter Connection". As a recovering “super slob”, Cassandra has discovered through her own journey with clutter, that organization is not one-size-fits-all. She has identified four unique organizing styles and developed the Clutterbug Method™ to help individuals discover their style and implement customized solutions that will finally get them organized long term.
Cassandra has been featured on The OWN Network, CTV, NBC, CBC, The Huffington Post, The Marilyn Denis Show, Popular Science, Women’s World Magazine and has been interviewed by countless other news organizations and podcasts. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Your Mom saved me from depression & guilt because I thought something was seriously wrong with me because my clutter and hoarding stuff (that I never could find back after I bought it) was out of control & overwhelming. Now I understand that I am a Butterfly and need to see in Macro NOT in traditional systems! I am so grateful. Your Mom is worthy of great respect for all she has overcome. ❤️

OMGoodness, Cass, Thank you! This is a life changing message. This came up randomly in my feed. As I sit at my piled-high kitchen table and consider the few places that there is some order in my house, you made it clear that I am a visual micro-organizer. So maybe I am not such a lazy, dismal failure. Every weekend my Saturday task is to clean up a room, and it has been something approached with dread and procrastination because I’ve put in so much work and not been successful or was unable to maintain. I am in my 50’s so that is a long history of failure. I even lead a double life of sorts because our almost-horde/cluttered home is a shameful secret that keeps us from ever having anyone to the house. Thank you for sharing your wonderful insight!

Bee-tterfly here! Am new to Cass (only discovered last week) and while I've not yet got my system 100% nailed down (I truly am stuck between the two! Surely there are other mutant/hybrids out here, maybe she'll address it someday 🙂 ) but I am nonetheless HOPEFUL for the first time in a very very long time. Once you've failed over and over and finally resigned yourself to just being *broken* in this arena, it's so hard to get past the self-inflicted disgust and battery and loathing. Not only does her methodology and teachings make sense and help *so* immensely but also just her obv compassion, having lived it herself, helps SO, so much. She's not only given me tools, she's made me *want* to care for and help myself again. ❤💗💝

Cass! That was amazing! I love the idea that we can turn our biggest weakness into our biggest strength, I just think that is so inspiring 😊

Omg this is totally me, the visual organizer. I’m not kidding. Once something is in a drawer or closet I completely forget about it! I need this because I have a phobia about putting anything away!!! Omg this is brilliant!

I absolutely love this. I used clothes baskets on the side of my younger son’s bed instead of a dresser because the drawers were never neat. It saved time and energy. Thanks for sharing!

This is genius! Seriously. Light 💡 bulb moment for me after spending the last 6 months watching every organizing show. I’m a butterfly 🦋 I spent years organizing cleaning everyone’s house but couldn’t manage my own & I thought it was because I was too attached to my stuff … but I just had to figure out my style & make it work for me. I’m very visual & I have ADD. Constantly working on 💯 things & forgetting about important things because I never knew where I placed it. I just spent an hour crying last night feeling like a complete failure & terrible mom for having a messy house. I also sell online so I have a lot of inventory & end up keeping way more than I need because “oh I can always sell it later.” Best 30 mins spent was watching your TedTalk & your personal channel. Can’t thank you enough! You are AMAZEBALL$ The less time I will spend looking for things & feeling miserable about my dysfunctional organization skills the more time I’ll have to build my online store & accomplish my goals! ty ty ty!

If that's what works for you, then go for it! 👍 Just remember, different strokes for different folks. No two people are the same, so what works for me might not work for you, and what works for you definitely doesn't work for me. 🙂 Empty spaces Cause me stress. 🤷‍♀️ Less stuff means I don't have the "something" I need to do the "whatever", and if I need it once, I'll probably need it again in the future. Dat's how My brain works. To me minimalists are boring people. They don't have a creative bone in their bodies. A painter can make a painting with one tube of paint, but it becomes a masterpiece when you give them a Full palette. 🤔 Have a nice day! 🙂
