Allow things to unfold and you will find your purpose in life | Peggy Oki | TEDxQueenstown

With an appreciation of flow and motion Peggy's life has been always been driven by passion. From surfing and skateboarding to the intimate appreciation what she calls the 'Cetacean Nation'. Discovering the transformative force of participation artwork through her Origami Whales project was the first step to realising that passion could be harnessed, amplified and ultimately inspire for a deeper purpose.
Surfer, Skateboarder, Artist and Activist.
Once the only female member of the famous Zephyr Skateboard team from documentary 'Dogtown and Z-Boys': Peggy’s love of the outdoors inspires her to travel worldwide in search of good surf. In 2004, she founded the Origami Whales Project to raise awareness about commercial whaling. She has also developed the Whales and Dolphins Ambassador Program and led campaigns such as ‘Let’s Face It’, which petitions to save New Zealand’s critically endangered Maui’s dolphins and Hector’s dolphins.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I really don’t get how us, as one of the millions of species this beautiful planet has, focus on destroying instead of living together and building together. We have to spread love and peace. Let’s have a beautiful place to live in like we did millions of years ago. Where we depended on one another to survive. We are all connected.

Every species destroys to some extent. Only humans are apparently the first creatures on Earth that use up resources faster than the Earth can replace them. There might be other instances in nature of that, but I’m pretty sure no animal uses as much resources as humans.

My parents didn't know how to encourage me to do what I loved, so I grew up hesitant about my passions. They weren't supportive if I mentioned arts, like photography or music. They were only interested in such fields like medicine, finances, so I had to find what I liked in these field. I love psychology, but I hardly imagine myself working in that area, I see myself as a calm, sensitive, loving and caring person. I love nature and animals, singing and writing poems. I am 31yo trying my best to come find my true self and it is not an easy process. Sometimes I think it would be the best if I cut out any contact with my parents, because all they care is do I have a good paying job, but they never asked if I feel fulfilled and happy.

My Old VHS Tapes ... Maybe because of our behaviour we are fast becoming "mere humans" in a world devoid of the diversity that we were once just a minor percentage "of". Of all, and everything we do, discluding diversity in favour of a monoculturality mentality that forces everything else out in favour of humans is ultimately limiting, and an incessant push toward A.I. is ensuring our demise as a species. One that is not truly worthy of existence. A visionary repeatedly saying mere humans is a humility perspective. But I could be wrong about this.

This. I think its still possible to start letting things unfold, but it really takes effort on your end to get out of that people pleasing and traumatized mindset. For me, going to therapy has really helped me to start thinking for myself, and to stop letting others opinions, expectations, and crossing of my boundaries take control of my actions any further. I'm still working on it, but its impacted me so much already. Once you are able to focus on just you and what you need and want out of this life, the rest is fair game and what truly draws you in will find you when you are in a position to accept it. This is all my personal opinion, but I hope its helpful in some way :)

"...sometimes art's only purpose is to exist for it's own sake". I disagree with you. Who says your art won't inspire people in 100, 200 or 1000 years in the future? Art, just like the rest of culture and even mankind... isn't stoic nor stagnant. It means different things for people through time. None of the art made till this day exists for it's own sake. It's aesthetically and conceptually impossible. Its purpose is to communicate the inner universe within a person, made by emotions, ideas, hopes, terrors and dreams. All of them evolve. Respected art could fall into oblivion and vice versa... but never cease to exist. Art can serve noble ideals, yes. But it can also be used as a tool to denounce what us human beings are doing wrong and portray this behavior in a more "noticeable" way. You know what they say: an image speaks a thousand words. Also a sound, a body movement, a theatrical gesture.

Turn compassion into action 🤝 after watching this video I applied to volunteer for sea shepherd! Thanks for inspiring me to make that move Peggy. I always think about these issues but I’m terrible at doing nothing all the time... >.< I want to help! I think many people do. It’s just difficult to know how. But seeing those thousands of whale origami.. make me realize that when lots of people do something small-even very small such as folding a piece of paper- they can create something world changing. I want to do something, even if it’s very small.

When you consider they evolved from the ocean, to land, then back to the oceans it makes sense they have enormous accumulated wisdom and knowledge.
