Life is a Game of Bullshit. This is How You Win | Genevieve Gregorich | TEDxColumbiaUniversity

Social scientist Genevieve Gregorich shares how learning how to win at the card game Bullshit helped her succeed in life. In both the card game and life, winning involves the same strategy. And, like any good strategy, it’s not what you expect. Learn the power of truth in a game of deception to unlock your true potential. Genevieve (Vivi) Gregorich is a PhD candidate in Management at Columbia Business School with a focus on Strategy. Her research examines the role of business in society, the interaction between social movements and organizations, organizational reputation management, nonmarket strategy, and zero- sum thinking. She has authored cases on personal strategy and innovation with a focus on the psychological conditions that generate innovative ideas and the political processes that push ideas through corporate and bureaucratic labyrinths. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Being honest is what gives us strength. However, just like going to the gym, it requires ‘good form’ or else we risk injury. Right words. Right timing. Right intention.

Life is not a zero-sum game. When we are all honest and authentic, we are all better off. Don't be afraid to be different. Your unique perspective is what makes you irreplaceable. The most important thing is to find your own treasure. What lights you up? What gives your life meaning? Don't be afraid to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone. That's where the real growth happens.

I was put on the "b" team. They chose the "a" team based on physical attributes. Us kids on the "b" team all became good friends. We ended up playing against the "a" team in a tournament and crushed them, and went on to win the tournament. We had a common ground which was being looked down on and used that to our advantage. We become the better team 😊

Hello. When I was little I was bullied in school. At home. I didn't know where I could turn to. I learned that I couldn't depend on anyone for anything. I learned to depend on myself for everything. I learned about the games people play. The manipulations of others were so visible. Once you gave attention you were taken for a ride. You get played with. Teased, and mocked. A game not for the weak of heart. Many times I contemplated committing suicide, because life didn't have meaning, or wasn't useful. Many times I wondeted why my mother gave birth to me if I was going to be a burden on to this world. I thought of myself being the lowest. Others told me so, and still do. This game is being played today by many. I learned too late in life that to win this battle it would take me a mental break down that lasted me 4 months in an asylum when I was 15. I learned the power my brain had over me. Also that words had meaning, and could break you. I broke when I was 15. Died, and rose when I was 26. Learned that the struggles of life are just in your head. I learned to be strong.

Wow, the intelligence she embodies, the manner of speaking, her passionate delivery, and those amazingly curious eyes of hers are all clear indicators that she's definitely all about knowledge, expanding understanding, and spiraling into any given direction seeking out new possibilities. If nothing is gained from this video, I hope her curiosity and love for information, understanding, and sharing these concepts are adopted at least partially by viewers. Love how she was called econ-god and realized the pitfalls of allowing ego to stand in our way, this woman is truly remarkable and will surely have much more to offer the world as the days and years pass by, her understanding and passion being stoked with each breath.

Seems like nowadays part of the template for how to starting a TED Talk is: 1. Start with: So... 2. Insert rest of text 😉

I agree about using So - it's a crutch word. Still and all, she gave an insightful speech- good points.

Everything she said had a point. Besides the joke on “it’s a poodle a show dog” everything she said if u listened carefully will benefit u tremendously. What she was ultimately saying “ is how can I ask for directions for a path that’s only destined for u” pick ur cards wisely in this game of life.

Not really. You just pick your cards. Whether or not you lay them down or keep them, and have the same attitude about either, is the game.

She referenced the Show Poodle dog due to her acknowledging that people are trying to be a copy and pasted version of what we believe is the most ideal type of person we can be according to society.

I don't know how this is possible but I feel as if I'm listening to a carbon copy of myself speak. I know that's an absurd statement but just listening to her, sorry I forgot her name, And her experience in school it's almost as if her and I have been living a parallel life. I just turned 36 and my mind is fractured into fragments which I'm trying to piece together. I'm not broken I'm just a bit wobbly. I'm so grateful that people share their experiences because now I know for a fact that it's not just me.
