The Blue Mountains [Union Pacific Battles 3 Summits in Eastern Oregon]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here is another early release for us going back to 2010.
We begin at UP's Hinkle Yard back when the hump was still in operation and head for the Idaho border at the Snake River.
For more than a century, the Blue Mountains of Oregon have echoed with the sounds of hard-working trains laboring up and down steep grades and squealing through numerous curves. Even with today's powerful, high-tech locomotives, railroaders still face a daunting challenge of running long and heavy trains through a range of mountains with three different summits.
This DVD takes you on a 204 mile journey through "The Blues" starting at the Hinkle hump yard and heading toward the Idaho border just east of Huntington. Heavy trains and heavy grades means BIG POWER! Thrill to the sound of 16,000 ton soda ash trains tackling 2% grades with mid and rear DPUs. Watch long stack trains race by at nearly 70 miles per hour.
Enjoy winter scenes around Meacham and Kamela where trains seem to appear right out of the ground as they crest the summit.
The magnificent scenery of northeast Oregon's Blue Mountains coupled with a good mix of long, high-tonnage trains makes this an amazing program to see and hear! Shot in January and April, 2010.

7idea is the gold standard of railfan videos. Absolutely stellar coverage. I followed this line on my way out west to see the Portland & Western SD7/SD9s before they were retired in 2021. I didn't have time to railfan it - so I am grateful I can view your video here. Thank you for making it and sharing it with us! -Drayton

I've driven Snowcats in the area to get to communication sites. While it's implied, the fact that the track between LaGrande and Pendelton is either up or down. The 2 pct + grades are the rule for the area. While there are a few "flat" areas, they are rare.

Man the wide angle shots, particularly in at the beginning this video, are a sight to behold. Like the combination of the bright yellow prime movers plus the geography in the fore and backgrounds is a killer combo here.

It's sad how much traffic has dried up on this line. Even being within driving distance of it now, I have so many other places I want to visit that'd yield more trains, and that's sad, considering how much I loved the Video Rails 3-parter on the Blue Mountains growing up. I definitely have this queued for later, thanks a bunch for uploading your content to your channel!

Agreed, I think it might be because they're putting more stuff over the Overland route or a downturn of intermodal traffic/soda ash

I've seen a huge reduction in freight traffic between Oakland and Roseville too. It actually seems to extend to SLC. Most of it must be going south, then coming up the valley to the bay area.

@@Narpets2112 Yeah there's actually new-ish trains that head over Tehachapi out on the Sunset Route - it's...odd seeing that traffic pattern be replicated from when SP did it in the 90s, except then it was because they had single tracked part of Donner.

3:16 Every journey over the OSL has to begin somewhere and that somewhere is here Hinkle this yard is the terminal for all trains in the Pacific Northwest. Hinkle is where three major lines meet the Spokane Portland and Seattle reached Hinkle in 1884 they interchange cars with BNSF at Walula Junction and the Walla Walla Railroad, the Oregon Trunk has a bridge over the freeway which goes past the former Boardman Power Plant and ties into the Oregon Trunk at Bend and has trackage right over BNSF to Chennault where it joins the Cascade Subdivision then we have the OR&N Mainline of the OSL The La Grande Sub and the Huntington Sub. Hinkle processes all the cars then they head east to Pocatello and Green River where they are blocked into their trains before terminating at Bailey Yard.

About a month ago I asked if you had anything from Hinkle to Nampa. This video delivered in a big way. Answered a few questions that I had. Scenery and trains were top shelf. Well done sir! I enjoyed it even more as my wife and her friend were out for the night at the local gambling emporium for supper, drinks and gambling. I was stuck at home with six cold Heineken 0 alchol beers and some of British Columbia"s finest buds that became legal in 2018. LOL! By the way the surround sound was working overtime.

I've been waiting for this one Part 2 of our OSL Series Part 1 was Albina Point to Hinkle and this time The Blues Hinkle to Huntington Yard. next time it will be Huntington to Nampa a week after that Nampa to King Hill and Ticeska then my area Bliss to Pocatello Yard fallowed by Pocatello to Granger. Always good to cover the OSL that is my home railroad.

In Sept. 2010, I got close to the same shot of the train coming into view from around the corner in the beginning of the Telocaset segment. It was the 844. I was a little closer to the track and filmed it all the way under the bridge. {The bridge I think you got your next shots from.} It was a great video, but my camera was nowhere near the quality of your video. That day we chased the train from LaGrande to Telocaset, sometimes hitting 95 mph on gravel roads to keep ahead of the train.
