Driver's Eye View - Welsh Highland Railway (Rheilffordd Eryri) - Porthmadog to Caernarfon

With just one day left to film the Welsh Highland Railway and there were no trains scheduled to cover the full route from Porthmadog to Caernarfon. Claire who had kindly arranged for me to film over the previous two days worked out that I could film the complete route although no trains were booked to make the full journey. I attached a camera to the Porthmadog to Beddgelert train, at Beddgelert the locomotive that had worked the first train of the day from Porthmadog took the afternoon train on to Caernarfon, there was no return working, so I followed by car giving me several opportunities to film the train along the way. I arrived early at Porthmadog for a tasty breakfast in Spooners Cafe, before filming the train making its way over the Cob from Boston Lodge where the empty stock and locomotive had been stabled over night, my heart sank as it began to rain. I mounted the camera on the locomotive hoping that it was only a shower, as it turned out the rain persisted all day, I watched the video back on my computer expecting it to be a complete washout, to my surprise I enjoyed watching the resulting atmospheric journey, the mountains were at their moody best.
The Welsh Highland Railway - 'WHR' - (Welsh: Rheilffordd Eryri) is a restored narrow gauge located in the Welsh county of Gwynedd. The 25-mile (40.2 km) long 1 ft 11 ½ in (597 mm) gauge line connects Caernarfon to Porthmadog, the line passes through the scenic Aberglaslyn Gorge as well as serving the popular tourist village of Beddgelert. The railway shares Porthmadog Harbour station with the Ffestiniog Railway's line to Blaenau Ffestiniog. One of the line's most notable features is the United Kingdom's only mixed gauge flat rail crossing.
During restoration most of the civil engineering was undertaken by contractors whilst the track was laid by volunteers. The original WHR ran from Porthmadog to Dinas, where it connected with the standard gauge Caernarfon to Afon Wen line. The modern day WHR uses the track bed of the long closed Afon Wen line to access its modern Caernarfon terminus, located in the shadow of the city's impressive castle, it is conveniently situated close to both the harbour and the town centre.
Bryngwyn and the slate quarries around Moel Tryfan were served by a short branch off the original WHR, the old branch line trackbed is now footpath know as the "rail trail".
The 3⁄4-mile (1.2 km) long Welsh Highland Heritage Railway runs from its station close to the Cambrian Coast railway's Porthmadog station along the trackbed of the former Cambrian Railways exchange siding to connect with the WHR main line at Pen-y-Mount junction.

I am from Scotland,if you like countryside and railways, and country pubs Wales is awesome. Been down a few times, travelled on most Welsh lines. Makes me angry when I think of the wasted opportunites in Scotlands Border Region and West Highlands. Narrow Guage would have been the answer for some closed lines, especially with the steam loco's available abroad, many built in Glasow. We have great scenery too ! Travell to some of Scotlands Tourist Spots, you cannot park, even on the closed railway land.( Which if you can costs you !) A lot of people have taken to driving on. I well remember travelling to some of these places as a child by train, seemed less congested. No doubt, some will disagree, wall to wall motor transport is the thing !

It is truely a fairytale land with its own myths and legends, even the name Beddgelert 'Gelert's Grave' is a reminder of a tale that brings a tear to many a visitors eye when they learn of the origins of towns name - According to legend, the stone monument in the field marks the resting place of 'Gelert', the faithful hound of the medieval Welsh Prince Llewelyn the Great. The story, as written on the tombstone reads: "In the 13th century Llewelyn, prince of North Wales, had a palace at Beddgelert. One day he went hunting without Gelert, ‘The Faithful Hound’, who was unaccountably absent. On Llewelyn's return the truant, stained and smeared with blood, joyfully sprang to meet his master. The prince alarmed hastened to find his son, and saw the infant's cot empty, the bedclothes and floor covered with blood. The frantic father plunged his sword into the hound's side, thinking it had killed his heir. The dog's dying yell was answered by a child's cry. Llewelyn searched and discovered his boy unharmed, but nearby lay the body of a mighty wolf which Gelert had slain. The prince filled with remorse is said never to have smiled again. He buried Gelert here".

The Ffestiniog Railway and Puffing Billy both entered preservation around the same time. The wooded area as the Welsh Highland train climbs away from Beddgelert does have a similar feel to it as some of the forests along the Puffing Billy route although the trees are different, both can be regarded as natural and ancient woodland.

ETA: well technically what is now the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, I think.

Your brother must have worked with the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, as opposed to the Welsh Highland Railway. The believe that the WHHR laid part of the WHR from Pen-y-Mount Junction to Traeth Mawr Loop, I wonder if your brother worked on that section before it became part of the WHR mainline? I don't know much about the period during which the track was laid to Traeth Mawr Loop, I believe the two railways had a disagreement that soured relationships for a while, I'm glad the two railways are back on friendly terms again. If you get an opportunity to ride the full line I think you will find it a rewarding experience.

When your Mum was still in Porthmadog, this railway was a footpath through the Aberglaslyn Gorge and the trains that once graced the line were confined to photographs in nostalgic books about the fabled Welsh Highland Railway. I walked parts of the old track bed 50 or more years ago with my grandfather, never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect to be able to ride a train along the entire route and a bit more. Your Mum left one beautiful part of the world to move to another. Unlike many towns in the UK, Porthmadog hasn't changed much in the last 50 years, even the Ffestiniog Railway was coming back to life then. It's an awesome ride and "yes" I think your Mum would have loved seeing the wonderful Welsh countryside from a Welsh Highland Railway train.

Hello Paul, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride, I'll be visiting Australia and New Zealand for most of this month, just a couple of days left before I fly out. All the best. Tim.
