Exactly! This is why everything is racist or homophonic in 2023-24. Those offended people are so angry on a daily basis that they SEEK for the offense on everything and everyone. So much political divide over personal biases it’s ridiculous. It gets worse when companies and governments pray on this illogical thing by further convincing them they are good cuz they put a flag on a store and they must BUY their products to help. It’s just pure stupidity and evil

The thing is, if you are told by a person on authority that there is a threatening face to be found, and then you don’t find one, but you are reliably informed that there is one, you pick one that looks the most threatening out of the group. Even if, per se, you don’t think that the face truly is.

As with blue dots, at first you get dots that are obviously blue but then the range of colors shrinks so you just pick the ones that look the most blue. It's not really possible to define what threatening looks like so people will pick the faces they think are most threatening even if there's not much difference.

  • @branditemple8954

Yeah, i think if you redefined the perimeters and started asking people to pick out the blue dot 'if there is one' or aggressive face 'if there is one', you are gonna get different results....at least to the aggressive faces. The blue is a bit subjective and more subtle and can be a bit of a mind eff imo as i feel like lots of shades of purple look blue and can be defined as such depending on your definition. If anything I feel like the aggressive faces one may show how our mind may repath neuro-pathways over long periods in a controlled and forced short period...if all you see are aggressive faces....you might begin reading them everywhere, lol, even in the most of subtlest of facial expressions.... basically developing an over sensitivity to others micro expressions...idk! Just a theory on the fly....

This is exactly why you experience diminishing returns with anything you put too much time into. This is why if you have a hobby such as music, or skateboarding and other things that involve developing skills more practice can be more harmful to your progress than just small sessions. You overstimulate yourself until you start working backwards. If you're ever frustrated or feel like you aren't getting anywhere with something sometimes it's important to remember that sometimes doing nothing is the solution. I recommend practicing anything that you do for around 15-30 minutes with 15 minute mental breaks in-between each session. And in general if it's something you feel like doing every single day it's important to get a good night's sleep so your brain can actually store all of that memory and your effort won't be wasted. You can achieve more with far less 💯🔥

Yeah you can do everything to feel good, workout, wake up early, get all the work done that you need to do, meditate and you will feel amazing… But if you doing all that comes from a place of “im not good enough, i need to better myself” It doesn’t fix the fundamental issue of you attaching your self worth to these “external” factors. Julien blanc has a nice analogy for this: That you “your body and skills” are like a video game character. You can upgrade skills: workout, charisma etc. But when you get of that game and sit alone, what are left with? And this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t workout and be social etc. But it should come from a happy place, like hey i would love to learn this new skill that seems cool, Instead of: aah I didn’t do this and that, and that other guy is way better than me, i need to do this so I feel good again and be better than him. And out of experience, the past few months I went full “david goggins” mode, woke up at 5am went for a run in the cold rain, then school, workout, study, meditate, sleep. And like damn….. I looked in the mirror and felt like a fucking beast. But a little while ago, i got sick and it stuck for like 2 weeks. I got of the “goggins mode”, and felt awful, fucking terrible, worse that before. And now Im doing my exams and only have time for studying although that’s a lie, because i can workout here and there and go for a run. But i lost the motivation because i know now that doing all that from the mindset of “im not good enough” is wrong, and that is the only reason i do it. Like i hate waking up early, and running and studying i would rather play videogames with the boys. Although when i do that i also don’t feel good about my self. Fuck This was a lot and I’m still learning to adapt to this… yeah what do you call it? Lifestyle? And I’m not sure if I fully understand

This "study" (air quoted by the fact that the researchers forced them to choose criminal faces everytime) actually showed us the effect of confirmation bias, if they're told that something is wrong, they'll try to finr something that's wrong. This is why courtrooms must always tell the witnesses "There's also a chance that none of the suspects shown here are criminals" because justice is not served by a lazy courtroom, it's served by a just courtroom

No one was forced. They could have simply not answered and been wrong. I think you're a perfect example of this phenomenon. You're trying to seek out victimhood by proxy without any information on how the study went. Asking people to identify criminals would only be a bad thing in a world with no criminals. We're in 2024, there are too many criminals. Nothing here was offensive. You simply want to be offended.

As far as your comment goes, I don't know what you're arguing. I never said facial recognition is perfect. I simply stated that they were not forced to identify anyone. They could have said "I don't know and I don't feel comfortable pointing someone out on little information." Very easy. Doesn't mean that we can't do better. I think the answer to this is most likely expectations. Say you're given a sheet with 50 coloured circles and you identify 15 of them to be blue. You are given another sheet with another 50 circles, you will naturally, unconsciously expect and seek the same number of blue circles as before due to you prior experience. It is because you're expecting this that you start selecting colours that closely resemble blue or as close as you can get to blue so that you meet your expected quota. I believe this is called expectation bias.

Ive been going through a really really hard time in my life recently and I spent all of my time trying to fix the problem I was going through. However, I discovered that when you are constantly thinking of a way to solve a problem, it keeps that problem alive. Sometimes the best course of action is to just let time do its thing and try to live life in the present.

Found the long explanation somewhere else, it relates to Mark's second book; We all make dozens of judgments every day, from deciding whether our clothes match to figuring out whether the dog down the street is a threat. Our decision making and assessments are not based on any hard and fast rules. Most of them are instinctive based on some subconscious triggers. This weekend, I got an insight into our decision making biases when I came across an interesting psychology experiment that Researchers at Harvard University conducted. The experiment involved Researchers asking participants to identify “Blue” Dots from a series of a thousand Dots ranging in color from very blue to very purple. These Dots would flash on a computer screen one after the other. Initially, for Dots shown on the screen, the participants identified the color pretty accurately. Roughly half of the dots were blue, and half were purple. However, progressively researchers made sure the frequency of Blue dots reduced dramatically. Strangely, the participants reacted by selecting as Blue Dots those that were shades of purple- their classification of Blue expanded in proportion to the decrease in the Blue Dots on the screen. In essence, as the occurrence of blue dots decreased, the definition of blue expanded. Prevalence affected the judgment of the respondents. The researchers termed this phenomenon “prevalence-induced concept change.” In further experiments, the researchers found the same effect when participants had to identify aggressive faces from a group that ranged from ‘very threatening’ to ‘not very threatening,’ and again when separating unethical research proposals from ethical ones. Even when the occurrence of “problems” (threatening faces/unethical proposals) went down, participants began to misread friendly and neutral faces as threatening and ethical proposals as fraudulent. The Blue Dot effect suggests that our mind is conditioned to look for threats and issues, regardless of how safe or comfortable our environment is. The better things get, the more we nitpick on even the smallest of issues. The size of the problem does not determine our emotional reactions to our problems. Instead, our minds simply amplify our problems to fit the degree of stress we expect to experience. Success and material progress do not necessarily relax us or make us feel better about our future. There are many examples of this. In the pre-Uber/Grab days, we were willing to wait for 30 min for a taxi to come. Today we complain if there is a delay of even 5 min. Wifi speed was a fraction of what we experience today. Yet, we quibble and complain that the Wifi is slow if a page load takes a few seconds more than usual. In the days of snail mail, we were willing to wait for a response for 30 days. Today with email, we complain if we don’t get a response in a few hours. Convenience has improved but satisfaction has not. A decade back, someone was living in a small apartment and very contented. Today, the same family lives in a Villa with a much higher living standard and feels less satisfied than before. The Blue Dot Effect, in many ways, represents our predicament. Most of us are leading more comfortable lives than we ever did. Yet, we are constantly griping with a sense of dissatisfaction. We don’t seem satisfied in our present state of relative abundance( compared to our past). This is the Blue Dot Effect playing out in our lives. We are amplifying the negatives and glossing out the positives, out of past conditioning. Recognize this and ease up. Our life if good and the world is not so bad, after all !! -- Ownmygrowth.com (for reference)

I see what their experiment is demonstrating but maybe it was just a statement of what's obvious and not some giant discovery. If you take my blue dots away but you've got me looking for blue dots... That's a lot of time spent on research but necessary in order to be able to point to facts, I guess. Just in case anybody wanted to argue that it's not a real thing. Now, did they do the experiment backwards though? Did they take us into utopia with it?

What would have needed to happen for them to not come to that conclusion? Was there an option to say: "none of them are blue."

As an artist, the blue dot thing is just a part of how our brain interprets information based on context… colors can look like other colors based on the general shade they are surrounded by. For example, a medium grey looks pretty light compared to pitch black, and it looks pretty dark compared to pure white. It’s really all about context. When everything is one way, it makes the things that aren’t quite the same to look waay out of place and different

We tend to overlook continual progress for the latest negative news, forgetting that we’ll almost certainly have better tools and ideas tomorrow than we do today. In other words, the better our lives get, the pettier our grievances become. Solution: The practice of gratitude provides a framework for examining goodness. The temporality of the experiment is not the determining factor. The determining factor is the orientation of focus. The group is aware that they are to look for threatening faces. As the pool of those faces minimise there besets an imbalance as the orientation (goal) of the focus does not parallel the presented angry faces. The consequences are thus worse than presented in the video. The experiment suggests that there is an morphological element to such things as state of mind and expectation

As the experiment progressed, they reduced the number of blue dots on the screen and replaced them with various shades of purple. However, the shocking result was that volunteers started calling purple dots as blue. Even when warned about the increase in purple dots and offered money not to do so, they still made the same mistake. Their vision had been distorted."

Now trauma and human psychology is complex, but if you were to base it on blue dot effect then you’re supposed to not talk about trauma.

@@ajk9420That is not what the Blue Dot Effect is. The Blue Dot Effect is that a lot of times our minds fall into this danagerous thinking pattern where they they expect problems all the time, even when they are not there. Because of this many people start thinking that there are problems where there aren't any at all. Of course there are still many people who actually face a lot of problems often.

@@channelpolitica1364 so you’re referring to problems as in trauma. And that these problems aren’t even real and don’t exist. So what is your solution or hypothetical solution? But maybe I phrased it weird or maybe you just wanted to disagree. I said that “The more that one focuses on the trauma, the more the traumatic reminders will pop up.” So to break it down, I’m saying the more that you focus on let’s say your childhood trauma then the more you’re going to be focusing on the triggers that brought up the trauma. So if you don’t reflect on your childhood trauma much then you’re not going to be reminded as much. You’re saying that “… a lot of times our mind fall into dangerous thinking patterns where they expect problems that’s not there.” So you’re saying, that when someone thinks of something (Ex:car accidents) then they’re going to be fearing of car accidents even when they’re driving normally and safely. So in conclusion you’re saying the more you think of something the more you’re going to hallucinate ideas about that something even if it’s not there. I’m trying to see where we differ in ideas. Yeah you added that “even when they’re not there” part, but I’m having a hard time seeing where we differ on our conclusion. Also I’d like to see any sort of suggestion for a solution.

I think we should take into account that the more the brain is worked, the harder thinking gets. In elementary school, we had a computer assignment in which we were supposed to choose the correct colored shape. The colors and shapes would both change between questions, and the question would also change. After about 45 minutes, if it asked where the yellow triangle was, i might click a yellow circle. This was 5th grade. They were simple answers to find, but over time, it became harder. I don't know if they took this into account, but i thought id mention it anyway.

Replace “blue dot” with fixing negative experience/behaviors. You have fixated on fixing the negative thoughts and behaviors for so long it becomes such a well worn pathway of thought that your brain begins turning purple dots, or non-threatening faces into blue dots, threatening faces, and the negative experience/behaviors you are trying solve. It becomes confirmation bias. You are looking for the blue dots because that’s how you’ve trained your mind to process and filter events for so long, now it sees blue dots where there aren’t any.

The blue dot itself is not negative. Reframing situations to accommodate the need to continuously find blue dots is, however, not. It’s confirmation bias. It’s training your mind to look for something enough until that is all you see. If you’re literally looking for blue dots, it’s not negative. If you are training your mind to continuously examine how your boss speaks to you, scanning for negative information, then that’s all your brain will pick up on. You will keep creating a problem that has already been solved. But your brain can’t let go.

Your brain likes to work with filters. Your brain works extra good on finding things that match those filters (basically what you're looking for). You filter for blue dots -> you get blue dots. You bought a BMW -> ever noticed how BMWs are suddenly everywhere?? You look for bad things -> You find bad things, BUT you look for good things -> You find good things! To top all that, there is no objective reality, there is only your view and your brains interpretation -> the world is literally what you make it! (So own it! 😊)

This one is slightly purple but maybe here, to these people, it counts as blue. It's about constructing a temporary agreement of how to perceive and describe reality with a group of people

I’ve been working through this and being much more aware over time of what actually is happening and not to expose myself to negativity (like watching the news a lot). The brain’s main function is to protect you, so if you have learned early on that the world is a dangerous place, it takes a lot of work to shake that off.

Horrible what goes on, and sad to witness. This is the danger of "do what makes you feel happy", when sometimes people should hear "you are perfect the way you are" or to just stick to makeup if you wanna tweak your looks and avoid extreme body mods. I have a problem with gender related stuff like the hormones or surgery for the same reason.... people think it is a quick fix for their internal problems, but it will not magically fix anything and just result in them being stuck on hormones that can cause problems or top/bottom surgery which just leads to more cosmetic surgeries.

@ceryxfigmenti5377 Then why are there people who de transition. These trans people, especially the teens I worry about, are still perfectly healthy other then their mental psych condition of gender dysphria... biologically healthy. We should not encourage anyone to take hormones that will have drastic effects on body, and be slave to pharmaceuticals and have to go to doctor or get injections every month for rest of their life. If as adult, they know the risk, then fine that is their choice just like other HRT or cosmetic surgeries. Also, hormones are balanced for men and women, with each individual having their own internal balance homeostasis. Men taking estrogen and blocking testosterone to be more feminine or like a women is not what their body was designed for, and it will cause many changes and harmful side effects. Loss of bone density is one, but plenty of other cause that is what hormones do. Best to just try to stay natural, or know the risks going in and not be misled to think its safe. Ozempic is another drug that is very dangerous and causing problems, prob will be recalled, but egotistical and vain people will ignore it just to lose fat.... the blame doctors pharma years later when peeps dying. Main problem is the push to encourage our allow kids teens to rush into gender treatments. It's like letting a kid have cosmetic surgery or take steroids. No difference, cosmetic can wait.
